I'm playing Nintendo Switch tomorrow at PAX, what unanswered questions do you have?

it wirelessly connects multiple switches together by wifi tech, similar to what apple does with airdrop on the iPhone. it works like bluetooth except it's wifi tech instead.

you could connect multiple switches in space if you wanted to

Os level or game specific implementation?

Besides the suggestions i had here:

http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=229224291

Please try this:

Hold 1 Joycon in SNES style mode. And see how plausible is to use the ZR or ZL button.

The idea is to compare it to the B trigger on a Wii Remote when it was held sideways NES style. To see if they could be of some use in SNES mode.

Don't know if i explained myself well enough.

P.S.: Remember the connector thing and to look for button accesibility when the R Joycon is flipped with the IR Sensor Camera towards the TV.

Expect one. £45.

I'm kind a looking forward to custom grips made for specific use cases. Even if they will charge stupid amounts for them. Can imagine maybe a racing game left grip with a unique steering paddle or something.. (unlikely but it's possible with this modular design).

Also I guess it's feasible for additional hardware that can slide in between the Switch and the Joycon's.. think and booming speaker clip for each side or something. Sky's the limit.

Its my personal belief that Bomberman would be the second best selling launch game on Switch if it was priced at $39.99.

I'll be interested to see how it does at the higher price point.

I heard that Digital Foundry said that it runs at 30fps.

A current-gen Bomberman game. At 30fps. For full AAA price.

Really, Konami?

EDIT: It's $49.99, but it's STILL too blastin' high!

It took a long time, and my legs felt like jelly, but it was worth it. I originally had no idea what I was going to do when I played Breath of the Wild, but I decided on the simple objectives of climbing the Temple of Time and finding the Korok in the water. I did both, and got into some misadventures afterward. I ran into a pack of Bokoblins, and was going to take them out with the bow I got from the temple's roof, but I ended up throwing my axe right into the middle of them because I guess I didn't unequip it.

Fortunately they didn't grab it. However a blue Bokoblin chased me, and that thing was fast. It was right on my tail the entire time, but I managed to lose it. Overall I enjoyed my time playing, and switching to handheld mode felt very intuitive. The click was as satisfying as they say.

Bottom right image is me enjoying seeing Link stub his toe on the treasure chest. The Nintendo rep was very nice in taking pictures of me playing.

Do the Joycons rumble when they're attached to the Switch? Is there any advantage to disabling rumble in terms of battery life or are the Joycons always independently powered regardless of whether or not they're attached?

Do we even know if the rumble can be turned off? It seems like it's really integral to some games but maybe superficial (beyond enhanced immersion) for others. Like the marbles in 1, 2, Switch or the [alleged] Rabbids infesting them in Rabbids Kingdom Invasion seem tied directly into gameplay... have we been able to turn rumble off on other consoles? I've actually never thought about this until right now.

The lack of dpad is the only thing bumming me out as someone who is really interested in using it as a handheld primarily.

I am so convinced of the success of the Switch that when a developer ignores it.. I feel bad for them rather than worried about the Switch!!!

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
I wonder if HD Rumble could transfer well to the cheap wheels Nintendo sells for Mario Kart. It will be interesting to see (if it's supported, and I hope it will. Journalists should all ask this question, to make it happen).

I just came back from the Toronto tour and here are my impressions.
I played Zelda, Street Fighter, Fast RMX, ARMS, Just Dance, Mario Kart, Snipperclips and Splatoon.

Zelda looked good, but jaggies, but ran smoothly.
Fast was pretty fun.
Street Fighter is Street Fighter
ARMS was like a tactical Wii Boxing.
Mario Kart looked amazing on the handheld.
Snipperclips was harder than I thought, it takes real coordination with your partner to play.
Splatoon was fun, but they only had tilt for aim, which I wasn't used to.

The Pro controller was very comfortable, smaller than it looks.
Triggers are def digital.
None of the games used HD rumble that I could tell.
Joycons were very comfortable to hold while playing ARMS (with the grip strap, didn't try without it)
Holding the R Joycon sideways was uncomfortable because of the Stick position.
L Joycon was perfect.
Video switches very fast from docked to undocked.
Holding it in handheld mode felt a little awkward because the tablet is so thin, I prefer the grips of the Wii U Gamepad.
Not having the letters on the L Joycon buttons was a little confusing for my friend, cuz I kept telling him to press "B" lol.

Yeah, Wii remotes you can toggle rumble on/off. Don't recall Wii U.

Damn, is it that subtle? ARMS, Splatoon 2 and Zelda all use it, Zelda's is subtle (bow string being pulled, bubbles in water) but with ARMS it's supposed to let you feel the ribbons and springs unraveling in your hands, and Splatoon 2 has the feel of your paint tanks filling up. Maybe it wasn't turned on in the demo units? Or maybe it was just too subtle to pick up on in a crowded busy demo place?

Oh damn I had no idea O:

I honestly didn't notice while using the Joycons.
I used the Pro controller for Zelda, but I didn't get a bow or go in the water. I felt it rumble during a cutscene, but it was pretty mild.

It's possible they were disabled for the demo, the home and capture buttons were.

Launch titles are unique. Not much competition. Usually why Ubisoft is always at launch and launch window. Easy money.

The lack of dpad is the only thing bumming me out as someone who is really interested in using it as a handheld primarily.

Haven't used it yet but there is kind of d-pad. But it is kind of odd. Wonder how the behavior will change on the pro controller. Most of the time I use it like four buttons so not sure how much I will miss it. But fair point.

Full AAA price? It's $49.99, not $59.99.

Here are some thoughts on Zelda from the event today (PAX San Antonio), plus some cool pics (not my post, just pointing this out to GAF): https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic...thread-29999-march-3rd/page-395#entry13613957

Nice pics. Reminds me of PAX east the first couple of years. Not the insanity of crowds it is now.

Played Snipper Clips and Mario Kart today and it was so much fun. The switch feels good in your hands. The buttons are definitely small but weren't really an issue to press. Did feel a little weird using the triggers at first but think I'd get used to it. It's really long horizontally. A really good size.

Mark Kart looked and ran really well. Not much to say there. I like these Splatoon character additions. Only watched mode but I'm excited for that. I think that will actually get the lady in to MK.

The joy con with a strap was perfectly fine. Using the right joy con is a little weird because of the analog stick placement but easily unnoticeable.

Me and the lady got lost in time playing Snipper Clips. It was really fun trying to figure out how to solve and it was fun messing around. We were laughing so much. The rumble when you clip felt good but it was anything extravagant.

Overall really excited for it to come out. Definitely more after playing it.

I'm really looking forward to Snipper Clips. I can picture my wife and I playing that together. And she isnt into games at all! I feel like she could get into that though.

Yeah, my girlfriend doesn't really play things on her own and she loved it. It's self paced so I could direct her around and was really easy to get a hold of. Definitely a great couple game.

Can i play movie files off a usb drive?

Pretty sure that's a no, but I'm not sure if it's been officially confirmed or not yet. Someone else was asking about MP3 and movies either earlier in this thread or in another similar one. But I mean, Nintendo isn't even letting us have Netflix at launch. They want this to be 100% gaming machine with no clouding of the message.

I could see them doing pictures, though, like 3DS.

This seems short-sighted. I would think they would want people to have as many excuses as possible to pick up a Switch.

Perhaps they feel like it isn't useful with every other device having access to those features.

You said handheld mode felt weird without grips like the Wii U gamepad. This kind of worries me. Though I will likely main the Switch in TV mode.

Does it have an option for RGB Full range? I'm forced to connect the Wii U to my laggy tv because my monitor, being a monitor is RGB Full only

I have a question. The placement of the second analog stick looks too close to the buttons and parallel to the X button. How easy is it to accidentally turn the right stick while using the face buttons? Do you have to "claw" your hand to avoid it?

Ditch the single player as I don't care about it. Just make it a multiplayer focused title and add in bots for solo play if you don't want to play online.

Charge $20 on the eShop and I'm in day 1.

Switch booth has been insane! Hope you have a contact to get you in front of the line. Today the Zelda line was 3 hours long 5 minutes after opening.

Okay everyone! Sorry for the late response, but I'm back and have *some* answers. Unfortunately, not as many as I had hoped though. I got to play Switch for a decent bit, but every console I played was locked the F down. Home button, share button, hell they even had metal brackets that covered up power and volume buttons. So everyone hoping for UI info (myself included) are out of luck here. This was a *very* controlled demo setup.

Also, I did *not* play Zelda. They had 3 setups - a "congregation" for playing Mario Kart (which I played), a ~30 minute line to get into the main Switch area to play ARMS, USFII, 1 2 Switch, Splatoon 2, Super Bomberman R, and Snipperclips (all of which I played), and then another line to play just Zelda. I got there at 10 am (when it opened) and the line was immediately 3+ hrs long. Sorry guys, no Zelda feedback. Sorry to disappoint.

Controllers

I was able to try every setup. The joycons are kind of amazing. They are small in my hands but they just feel great. They're solid, the HD rumble is legit (I was seriously impressed by the ball game in 1 2 Switch), and they're super responsive in ARMS. The strap things for the joycons turn them into the controllers the kinda need to be. They're a bit uncomfortable without the strap attachments, but once they're on there, they feel like a natural extension of yourself. I also used both joycons in Snipperclips horizontally and I can report that both of them actually feel pretty great. Yes they're small, but I didn't have to stretch my thumb in either setup. With the joycon L, my left thumb very naturally rested on the joystick, and with the joycon R, my right thumb very naturally rested on the buttons. For reference I'd say I have average sized hands for a man. I would not be opposed at all to playing some fun light multiplayer games in this setup. Using ZL and ZR is not *great*, but it's totally usable for some light fun. Especially with the strap attachments on. Also, there's these little white tabs at the bottom of the strap attachments that when you flip down or up will "lock" the attachments / "unlock" them.

The joycons attached to the switch was also a very natural, and great, feeling setup. It feels and plays how you would expect it to - fantastically. I was playing console level games in my hands, and it was awesome. Oh, and I could definitely feel HD rumble in this setup, though it was less pronounced.

The Pro Controller was okay. I played USFII with it. There's nothing wrong with it at all. It doesn't re-invent the wheel at all. And that's what's *good* about it. It gives players a standard, basic ass control scheme. And some games need that. But nothing about it was particularly "impressive". It's definitely nicer than the Wii U Pro Controller. It gets the job done.

The only control scheme that was surprisingly not my favorite was the joycons in the grip. This was the basic (non charging) grip. Now, just putting my hands on it felt great. But of all the control schemes and hardware there, the grip itself felt *very* cheap. It's a very thin, and way too flexible piece of plastic. I felt like it wouldn't take too much force to break it. When I was squeezing my hands a bit, I could absolutely feel flex and subtle movement in the whole setup. This is a shame to me, because this was the setup I was most looking forward to. It's by no means BAD. It's just that all the other setups felt so great that compared to them, this setup felt a *little* cheap. Hopefully the "charging grip" feels more solid. Who knows (they didn't have one there).

The Switch itself

The tablet is very basic by itself. I tried the touchscreen in every game, but it was disabled across the board. I listened and felt for air coming out of the vent on every game and I couldn't feel it at all in any config (docked or handheld). Even in ARMS, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart. Impressive. The kickstand actually felt pretty darn cheap to me. Every other part of it felt solid, but that kickstand just feels like it could easily break off, and the Switch could possibly fall over if something knocked it from the other side. I'm probably over-exaggerating, but it was noticeably not that great of a part. Oh, and I'm 99.9% sure the screen has glass over it. It did not feel like plastic to me. Felt like some kind of gorilla glass.

The dock

I got a look in the dock, and to me it definitely looked like the USB C male end actually recesses down like someone earlier mentioned. There are these little triangular looking tabs that I think when they get depressed by the Switch, they force the USB connector up and into the Switch. I believe it's designed that way to prevent the USB connector from accidentally breaking off. Lifting the Switch out and putting it back into the dock felt very natural. I thought it could be difficult trying to find USB and place it in just right, but it uses guides to naturally bring it on home. I was not able to try and see if the dock could work on it's side as some have asked, as they were bolted down. Here's the pic I was able to take pointing down inside the dock. TO ME, it looks like what I've described.

The games

ARMS is the standout for me. And for reference, when I first saw the reveal trailer, I was not impressed. But playing this game is the real deal. There is clearly a lot of depth to this game, and playing it felt very natural. It's amazing how quickly I picked up on the movement controls. Control felt very accurate. The only thing I had trouble with was blocking, but I think that was actually on ME, because I had a tenancy to block late, so I would often try and block after kinda starting a punch. If the game senses a punch, it GOES, and that's part of the challenge. It's risk and reward. I cannot wait for ARMS to release.

USFII was fun! It's SFII! With some new changes! I don't really have anything to add more than what's already been said elsewhere.

1 2 Switch is silly, but the joycons' hd rumble is the real deal. You have to feel it to believe it. I'm gonna pick up this game because I think it will be a fun little party game.

Splatoon 2 felt pretty much like Splatoon, lol. It played great in handheld mode.

I'd never played a Bomberman game before, so I don't know how to compare Super Bomberman R, but it was cool. What was super impressive was how quickly and easily we were able to have all the consoles join a "room" and start playing. I was expecting it to be a nightmare because of wi-fi, bluetooth, and whatever other signals all over the place in a convention. But it was smooth as butter. I'd say the best ad-hoc setup I've ever seen. And I did not have that "eyes hurting problem" that I saw reported elsewhere. I could see everything on the screen just fine.

Snipperclips was fun. Might grab it to play puzzles with the wife. Nothing amazing, and it could easily exist on other platforms, but it's fun.

Mario Kart felt like Mario Kart! I played battle mode and a race. It's fun, and it looks gorgeous on the Switch screen!

Questions

Okay, so I'm going to try and address general questions as best as I can. I might try and go back through the thread and quote people if I have specific answers to things.

Speaker quality / loudness Could not test at all. Everything I played was on mute, or so quiet I couldn't hear. And I was unable to adjust volume.

Joycon L "d-pad" I wasn't able to try the "d-pad" in any games like SFII or anything unfortunately. But it's definitely 4 individual buttons and not one piece. It felt like the equivalent to the letter buttons on the joycon R.

Sonic Mania was not there :(.

Dead zone of analog sticks on joycons I didn't feel any noticeable dead zone. Note that these sticks are smaller than usual, so there's not a LOT of room to go anyways. They're not Vita small, but they're also not Xbox One big. They're in between.

Brightness settings I was unable to adjust brightness (or any settings), but the screen looked amazing, had fantastic viewing angles, and I had no trouble seeing at any point.

Heat? The Switch never once felt hot or even warm on any game I played.

Hibernation mode - could not test or get an answer.

Splatoon 2 switch weapon between matches - yes, in the setup they gave us (turf war local ad hoc multiplayer 4v4), we were able to change weapons between matches.

Joycon buttons mushy or clicky? CLICKY!!!

Headphones I was unable to test my headphones. The port was blocked by the metal protective casing.

Wrap up

Okay! So that's what I can answer off the top of my head. I'm going to go back through the thread to see if I missed anything. But one thing I know I missed, and I'm really sorry about this, is I didn't get any pics of the sides of the joycons like Refreshment.01 requested. I'm very sorry about that. We were so busy filming and testing, and that one thing completely exited my brain. :( And I'm sorry to everyone with Zelda questions. We just couldn't make a 3+hr line work for our schedule for a game that has that demo footage already all over the internet.

Another interesting tidbit is that my wife commented on how much she actually really dug the Switch, and even hinted at possibly wanting her own. Now what's interesting about this is that she doesn't consider herself a gamer. She plays fighting games with me, but that's about it for the most part. She told me that the joycons felt like they were "my size". (My being her of course). She's small and has small hands, and she also boxes, so playing ARMS was an amazing experience for her. She actually beat me.... bad. LOL. I was really surprised by how much she really dug it. She even loved using the joycon in horizontal mode when playing Snipperclips. And she had fun with them in handheld mode playing Bomberman.

Lastly, we shot a bunch of footage and I will be getting it edited and uploaded to FloKO.tv some time this week. I'll update this thread with that so you can check out the footage, if you so choose.

I hope some of this is helpful, and I'm sorry I wasn't as helpful as I had hoped I'd have been able to be!

OH - and I am 150% team NEON after seeing it in person. BEAUTIFUL.

(I just realized the metal bracket isn't attached to the Switch I'm holding in this photo, but it was a completely non-functioning unit. It only had a red screen that said nintendo switch on it and had the logo. I remember trying all the buttons, but nothing did anything.)

**And thus ends what I believe is my longest NeoGAF post ever.**

How satisfying is the Switch trademark sound?

SUPER satisfying.

I have a question. The placement of the second analog stick looks too close to the buttons and parallel to the X button. How easy is it to accidentally turn the right stick while using the face buttons? Do you have to "claw" your hand to avoid it?

I didn't have any problem with this. I held it naturally (for me), a general grip, not a claw, and had no issues.

Is the OP going to edit their original post?

I hope so. I really don't wanna dig though page after page

Good call. I'm going to just add a link to my answers in the first post.

When playing games like Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 with dual Joy-Cons (with neither the Grip nor attachment to the console in handheld mode), how do the motion controls work? Is the gyro restricted to only one Joy-Con (e.g.., just the Joy-Con R in most games), or does moving either Joy-Con affect the camera/aiming? Hoping for the former; if not, I hope there would be system settings to disable at least one of the controllers' sensors in the final product.

I was unfortunately unable to test any game in this way other than ARMS, and that doesn't really apply to the question based on its control scheme (you use both controllers for motion controls in ARMS).

What is FloKO? Is it a spin off of Flotrack? As a former track and field athlete I used to visit that site a lot. Super weird they've expanded into gaming if so.

FloKO is a part of the FloSports network, so yes! We're a sister site of FloTrack. I work in the same office with all those guys and gals. I'm the senior editor of FloKO. Generally we are focused on FGC coverage, but I have lots of general gaming interests, so when I'm able to, I like to cover anything and everything I think our audience will enjoy. But the primary subject matter is FGC based.

See if you can get any info on how/if we can use headphones when docked. And not plugged into the headphone jack while docked--is there a solution for people who don't want to run a cable across the room? Bluetooth headphone support? Support for USB dongle based headsets like the Sony Golds?

I was unable to do any headphone testing / get questions answered about that :(.

How weighty is the dock?

I couldn't tell because they were all locked down :/. Felt sturdy though.

Is there any flex on the base unit? Does the base unit twist and creak? If so, does the game cart pop out and hit the guy opposite in the eye?

I didn't feel any flex with the joycons connected to the tablet. I *did* feel flex with the joycons attached to the non charging grip (no charging grip was there)

1. While using a detached Joy Con, does pushing the left stick while pressing the B button, makes your thumbs touch each other? like what happened with the first Wii Classic controller? that was pretty unconfortable.

2. I wonder if there's a BOTW WiiU version in the event to play, but I wonder if there's some kind of functionality with the touchscreen.

3.Are the L and R detached Joy Con buttons "clicky" feel or "mushy" feel? A better question would be, can you tell which buttons are "mushy" and which ones "clicky"? (like those on the GBA SP and those in the NDSLite)

1. I did not test this, sorry.
2. No Wii U version was there.
3. The L and R buttons on the joycons felt clicky to me. Nothing really felt mushy joycons at all to me. And I hate mushy buttons.

So it'd probably be better to have the strap on when playing with joycons in each hand for games like Zelda or Splatoon(Console games) is what I'm kinda getting from your impressions of the joycons themselves.

How is the joycon feel without the little slide on grip strips - in particular the shoulder buttons but also general comfort. I'm wondering if the straps mains exist because without them they joycons are uncomfortable to use, which would be a shame and reduce the benefit of having little hidden shoulder buttons in the first place

The strap attachments are 100% about comfort. I think that without them, the joycons "get the job done" for quick light multiplayer. But if I was actually gonna sit down and play for a while, I'd probably throw the straps on there. The joycons aren't "bad" without the strap attachments. They're just better with them. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Another thing I wanted to know is that if gyro aiming can be done with just one joycon or do you need both if you are doing split setup.

Also thanks for the impressions.

I wasn't able to test this unfortunately. When I played Splatoon, the joycons were locked to the switch (literally locked with a metal device), and I believe ARMS requires you to move both joycons in general.

How are the jaggies and shimmering in Zelda on the Switch Screen?
I know it looks pretty horrible on tv, but how does it look on the Switch itself?

Thank you very much OP your posts have pretty much answered every question I had about the Switch hardware wise, but I have to know... Are the triggers clicky or do they have some give?

Couldn't play Zelda. And even if I could, they were only demoing it on TVs.

I remember them being clicky, but I can't remember exactly. I can say they felt good and I'm prone to notice mushy buttons and be bothered by them (I actually love my iPhone 7 plus because my previous one had a mushy home button and now with the haptic feedback fake button, I don't have to worry about mushy buttons). Them not standing out to me is a good thing.
