Tony Hawk: THPS Doc in the Works, Pursuing New Skating Games Without Activision

First, from Tony Hawk's Twitter:

A THPS documentary is in the works... follow @THPSfilm for updates on "Pretending I'm a Superman"

The documentary is being worked on by YouTuber Icebears4ever (a THPS diehard who has done similar work in the past) and former Neversoft producer Ralph D'Amato, who worked on every game up to Project 8.

In addition to this, an interview with Hawk for Jenkem Magazine's Oral History of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was published a few weeks ago, which indicates that he's been in the early stages of a potential new video game.

Are there plans for more games in the series?
Not from Activision. I’m potentially working on something but it’s so early I couldn’t talk about it. I don’t have any contracts signed but it’s exciting. I feel like it’s with the right people so I should know more in the next couple months.

Hawk mentions that this is all super early, so this is purely speculation, but considering the possibility of #skate4 we could be looking at a situation in the future where both series make a return at the same time.

please not another THPS. 5 was junk. give it up for goodness sake. if they are serious about it then get a good developer to work on it.

All we really need is Skate 4.

Skate left the Tony Hawk gameplay in the dust and is still the GOAT all these years later.

Skate 4 with Tony Hawk as a playable character, give it to me.

There are people that clamor for that arcade THPS feel. It's why people were originally excited for the HD remake and 5 before they went to shit. OlliOlli got so popular cuz it felt like old school Tony Hawk.

Skate 4 with Tony Hawk

I want it

I don't think Tony Hawk in a Skate game would go over well with people who love the THPS style of gameplay, but at the same time, EA making Tony Hawk's Skate would be the most baller shit they could do.

Ideally, they'd have it split so game has a mode that plays like THPS and one that plays like Skate, but that's probably way too ambitious for one game.

Make a new THPS game that isn't garbage. That's all I want, but it seems impossible. I consider Pro Skater 2 and 3 among the best games I've ever played.

I have fuck all interest in the Skate series. Never liked them and don't like how they control.

I want a proper THPS game, up there with the best of them like 1/2/3.

I like both but they are very different in styles of gameplay, its better to keep it that way.

Y'all saying put Tony in Skate are nuts. I love both series, but for different reasons. Skate is NOT THPS, its not even close to replicating what people love about THPS.

We need another studio that actually gives a rats ass and has talent to build a THPS successor.

That period between THPS2 and THUG was pretty damn great. Those games offered the quintessential gameplay experiences for someone in their teenage years.

It's kinda sad he won't give up on it. I like his passion for it but he has to realise it was a product of its time, which has now passed.

Oh absolutely! I would never suggest them to change Skate 4s controls etc, the fans love it the way it is and I'm jealous they might actually get a sequel which isn't short changed/given the short end of the stick budget/development wise.

Fucking Activision.

I don't think this is fair. If they can get one good game out there the series will be revitalised again. I mean, we probably would have said the same thing about Doom or Wolfenstein a few years ago.

Absolutely, genre's have their ups and downs but those ups usually start with a remarkable game. I love both THPS and Skate and would love to see a game from either series, they both fill very different spots though.

There's always room for fun games. And the formula isn't exactly dated. It's basically an arcade mode skate game. All it takes is a solid dev and an adherence to what made the og Hawk games good.

It won't hit the heights the series was at in its heyday, but there's no reason it can't be a niche market success these days. THPS5's sales considering the state of the product that released show there was enough demand for that.

Speaking of, I booted up my PS2 copy of THPS3 last night, still plays great.

I also forgot how awesome the music was.

After Ride and 5 this guy's word in games is about as valued as Dyack's.

edit. Actually quite interested in the film though. From the credits in those games they have a lot of archive footage from development. Will be exciting to hear the skaters perspective on it. I remember an old skate video where Koston would be carrying around a Power Book and playing Tony Hawks 2 or 3 at the skate park.

Skate 4, no need for Hawk since he'll cost money and may not bring that much sales.
Put the money on something else.

Also I think that SSX and THPS have old gameplay mechanics that we wouldn't enjoy the same way today. Well at least for me, mashing buttons for tricks and fireworks everywhere is not something I want from these games.

Well, even if I prefer something else, if there's an audience, then hoping you'll get the game you want.
please do give me Skate 4 and Amped 4 anyway

Tony Hawk is a really cool guy who actually cares about games, so it's not surprising that he's interested in being in a good game again.

Kickstarter campaign in the next six months for Not!THPS with ex-Neversoft guys, I imagine.

I worked as lead programmer on a skateboarding game with some of the ex-Neversoft guys and surprisingly enough, as a die-hard THPS fan, I felt they really lacked the understanding of what made THPS so awesome in the first place.

It was a mess of a project and everyone ran around like chickens with their heads cut off. That was just a mobile game, so yeah --I lack faith. lol

They're going to be showing off stuff on their social media accounts. They posted concept art of Suburbia from THPS3, and it was apparently supposed to feature a drive-in theater.

Holy shit if he's talking with EA and working on Skate 4... man there's going to be some REALLY happy gamers in that announcement thread

EA would be the first and logical choice. But I'll present two others that should seriously consider working with Hawk.

Microsoft-- this if done correctly would be an Xbox/PC exclusive that would get a lot of attention. Could be a good exclusive for Scorpio. Yes, I'm one of the people who believe Scorpio is Xbox 4.

Nintendo-- if Nintendo is serious about Switch speaking to an older demographic, THPS would be one of the most logical games you can imagine for local and online coop, multiplayer. Plus I would imagine development cost on Switch would be cheaper than Ps4/Scorpio.
