From the Nintendo Financial Release

That's the fastest I have ever seen a Pokémon game sell. It has already outsold ORAS and X & Y, which reached 16 million isn't that far ahead.

X & Y have also now gained further legs and have outsold Pokémon Black & White having sold a further 1.2 million this fiscal year

For reference

Green, Red & Blue: 31.38 million (Pre-Virtual Console)
Yellow: 14.64 million (Pre-Virtual Console)
Gold & Silver: 23.10 million
Crystal: 6.39 million
Ruby & Sapphire: 16.22 million
FireRed & LeafGreen: 11.82 million
Emerald: 7.06 million
Diamond & Pearl: 17.64 million
Platinum: 7.69 million
HeartGold & SoulSilver: 12.72 million
Black & White: 15.62 million
Black 2 & White 2: 8.52 million
X & Y: 16.06 million
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire: 13.68 million
Sun & Moon: 14.69 million

Well deserved for Sun and Moon.

Hey Joe, can you put the Sun/Moon stats in the post too? It confused me for a bit being in the title only.

EDIT: And you did before I hit post lol

In before Nintendoomed.

Seriously though... if this Stars rumor is true, has me hyped. I love the setting of Sun and Moon but can't bear myself to play dedicated handhelds (thank god for the Switch).

sun and moon bumped sales so much that the attach ratio for the 3ds went from 4.75:1 to 4.91:1. getting over 5:1 would be really good for a handheld device.

Incidentally, in the time period of S/M's sales, X & Y sold 11.61 million, and that's with an extra month of sales

Pokemon has had shockingly consistent sales for like 15 years.

By the way, I'm surprised ORAS outsold HGSS. Is there some good explanation for this? I seem to recall a lot more hype around HGSS, but that was just GAF and I'm sure it's not representative.

Amazing success for the 20-year old fad. I didn't think it was possible, but the right storm hit for Pokemon to grow once more. And with an excellent pair of games to do it to boot.

Damn. If Sun and Moon just keeps the usual Pokemon legs, it will surely outsell Diamond and Pearl when all is said and done.

Wow well deserved. I love SM but sadly the competitive scene this generation hasn't really gripped me so the longevity of the game for me was short compared to prior generations. I think a Switch version would change that probably though, just sick of the handheld right now and I can never find opponents online to battle. Gets frustrating when it disconnects from free battle due to "no opposing trainer could be found."

SM will undoubtedly pass XY, which is pretty amazing since BW didn't get near DP. XY would've sold even more in ORAS was released so soon, but I don't think you can complain about 13 million sold on a remake.

I contributed. Because of Go, I wanted a real Pokemon, but I wasn't too impressed by the tropical theme of Sun/Moon. So I got X instead.

And ended up only playing a few hours :)

Wowza, outrageous sales! Will be very interesting to see what Pokemon does for the Switch (will probably lead to me buying the system)

So the Nintendo doomed clock is at what time again?? Nintendodoomclock.gif. Glad the Big N is raking in the dough. Now hopefully this year their hardware sells off the shelves

Even if Stars is real. I don't think it will get a lot of sales (for Pokémon standards) considering it will release on a very recent console.

Oh it will I really believe, peeps are thirsty to play a home console Pokemon game, even if it is based off Sun/Moon, it will generate some money and hardware sales. I stopped playing sun/moon on my 3ds because of how shitty it looked and ran when more than two pokemon were tossed on screen

Let's not ignore the fact that Pokemon has been carrying Nintendo for a while though. Without it, Nintendo would be in a far weaker position.

Sun/Moon are amazing in how much they changed things up to feel fresh while still feeling like Pokemon. This where X/Y failed for me as even though the new 3D Pokemon was amazing, everything felt so stale.

You underestimate Pokémon as a system seller.

Wasn't Crystal GBC only? There's a reason it's the lowest selling third version.

Pokémon single handedly revived the GameBoy and saved Nintendo in the 90s

Here it is, doing it again

beat the game and selling it now. Pokemon feels abusive as fuck to me now, and i used to be first in line to defend that they like battling etc

lol no. no doubt the qol changes are good, but overall? nope. shit story, unmemorable ost, forgettable casts, slow battles etc.

Precisely. I've traded in X for how craptastic it was, and kept Black and Black 2 and even managed to replay them twice. I can't see how anyone could say XY was better than the 5th gen, especially when the 5th gen made such an effort to have a great story.

Also not surprised that SuMo are about to exceed XY considering it's a much more superior game.

... Why? Especially when the hypothetical Stars is going to be a Sun/Moon up-port anyway and won't use anything the Switch has to offer.

If Pokemon Stars could exist and release when it's rumored to, it'll be THE system seller. If it doesn't get at least half of the sales of Sun and Moon CURRENTLY HAS, I'll eat my hat.

Again, if it exists.

Yellow: 8.86 million (Pre-Virtual Console)

That is all it sold? Damn I thought it pulled in like 15+ my very first console was the special pikachu gameboy color, got a worm light attachment and never left my room

I already mentioned that, people still want to play it on the television, especially when it does not look like shit and run like shit. I'd love to play it on the big screen, hopefully with a Dodrio speed up option like Pokemon Stadium offered. Having it not be a pixelated mess is a bonus
