Nintendo Switch will support VR in the future

Am I wrong for thinking that this means we will get a higher resolution Nintendo Switch for VR? Since Switch only has a 720p screen.

Kimishima also said Nintendo is "studying" adding virtual reality functionality to the new console. "If we are able to resolve the issues with playing [VR] comfortably for long hours, we will support it in one form or another," he said, without providing a time frame.

doesnt sound quite like 'will' in the title?

once they figure out how users can play for hours without problems.
Yeah not gonna happen if they plan to use the fat tablet as display. Also 720p display, sure looks great through the lenses lol

Must be a future model? There is no way the current screen would make for a satisfactory experience. The 1440p screen on my phone makes for an OK experience.

They'd have to if they're interested in VR. A screen the size of the Switch at 720p right in your face would look horrendously blurry.

I've done Google Cardboard with my iPhone 6s (roughly the same resolution at 4.7") and it's practically unusable unless I cross my eyes. Still super blurry.

Can't wait for Nintendo to dip their toe in VR.
They laid foundations for touch screen game design, motion control, Nintendo game design in VR need to happen.

Meh. Indifferent towards that and it will probably cost a fortune like all current VR sets. VR it's simply not for me I guess :c

I can't see myself playing VR with a 720p screen.

Hell, even PS4 games are pixelated af on VR (although it's better on PRO, IIRC), can't imagine what kind of IQ NS would give us.

I'm not on that train.

Sounds like they're waiting for the technology to improve, but are overall interested in the potential of VR.

I think its reasonable stance to take right now.

I don't really understand how the switch could power it to make it even half as appealing as other sets.

Unless this is on newer more powerful switches I suppose.

I doubt it will use the switch's main screen. I assume the helmet will contain its own display.

Why does everyone assume it would use the device mobile-phone style?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
That was a given, no way its happening with the first Switch generation though - next generation 2019/2020 seems likely.

And this, is why the switch's design, and inclusion of motion controllers is brilliant.

If Nintendo can do an inexpensive solution that can somehow to Vive-like tracking, for Room-scale VR, that would be amazing. Either way though, being able to buy a simple Headset shell like Gear VR, and instantly make switch a cheap VR device, could make this very worthwhile.

If only Nintendo could sell an even more powerful Switch a few years down the line, with a 1080-1440p screen, for a reasonable price. Now that would be something.

720p screen and underpowered hardware.......Yea sure.

The Switch cannot even run a last gen game (Zelda) at 1080p. How the hell is that hardware supposed to run VR?

If their solution involves using the tablet screen, sounds horrible!
Not only with it being a 720p, but strapping a tablet to your face?
I can't imagine it being comfortable to use.
That and the question of is the switch even capable of supporting VR well enough?

If Nintendo develops flying skateboards and everlasting batteries right after, that would be swell.

All I keep thinking about is playing super Mario 64 VR. I think the fidelity and resolution of that game makes sense for switch.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but the switch seems in like with current mobile VR solutions, no? I imagine the biggest issue, is if the Switch's screen is only 60hz. For simply VR games, the switches internals seem fine, and the inclusion of motion controllers could make for some great little VR games.

I'm thinking down the line they will release a New Switch with a 1080p screen, faster processor, and updated joy cons. The VR potential for the Switch is insanely obvious.

I think we'll see a Switch Pro 1080p in 2-3 years but VR will probably support the 720p screen too.

what do you think they would change with the joycons? I agree they'll make a version with a bigger battery that can run faster when portable, but that's it.

The VR headset will obviously come with a VR dock with a beefier Tegra co-processor and only be playable stationary

obviously

Easy. Lower your standards. It's not gonna be AAA fare.

Did you even read? That's my point. I have gearvr ND even if it hit that level the other sets will be so God damn far ahead it wont even be funny.

Anyways. Will they call it virtual boy?

Lol, indeed.

Let's be honest though, Nvidia has already spoken about a long term partnership with Nintendo. If the Switch is successful, I could easily see them simply building on this foundation and releasing an even more powerful switch with a higher-res screen down the line. It seems like a pretty obvious next step, especially if they plan to push VR.

Also, in 2-3 years time, I could see a GTX 1160m video card being close to a GTX 970 in power, and also incredibly viable for a tablet platform like switch due to cost, power consumption, which would make a 1080p Switch a great little VR device. Nintendo would just need to figure out a good tracking system. How great would it be, if your VR experience was portable, and you weren't restricted to a single room of movement?
