Kimishima considering 3DS successor

Given that... May be a smaller switch and then call it a day...

Kind of weird becase he seem to sound like a different machine altogether...
They list 3DS and 2DS as if they're separate systems sometimes, because from a selling points perspective, they kind of are.

Introducing... Switch Lite!

Smaller, more colors, no dock/mobile only, $199.

They won't make a new brand/machine.

How would that be a 3DS successor though, anymore than the Switch already is? Yeah they'll probably bring out a future version of switch with shrunk process node allowing for longer battery life and smaller physical size, but that's not really a separate platform.

Kimishima: "yes, we need a 3ds successor"

Kimishima's mind: "hopefully the Switch success and becomes that successor"

That's really how i see it.

I'd say we wait for the officially translation of the Q&A.

Which should be any day now.

Nintendo's been getting fast with those recently.

It would be cheaper & portable and it may not be able to play every Switch game. It may even have a different name, but the a Switch with no dock or removable Joy-Cons wouldn't be really... Well, switch.

Nintendo considers the 2DS and the 3DS as different systems.

Also I don't believe that a switch "lite" is the best choice. If they shrink the internals I think they should increase the battery size

Edit: unless shrinking the internals leads to less power usage.

I see this as Nintendo purposelly throwing PR spin to its rivals. Obviously the logical choice is Nintendo will abandon 3DS after a year or two, but by constantly reiteratinf the 3DS successor in every PR, seems Nintendl can't keep a secret that 3DS will be put out to pasture someday, the more denial, the more confirmation that they have no immediate plans for a 3DS successor

I don't get the skepticism. They're presumably going to release a smaller Switch at some point.
I really don't think this is the plan at all. Nintendo's messaging on the Switch has been it's a party you can take anywhere. They could not downplay the traditional handheld aspect more. Plus with how the controllers work, the battery life, the software lineup... it's just not a handheld.

What would make it a 3DS successor is if it were more affordable and singularly focused on the handheld experience. It doesn't need to be a different platform to accomplish that. Since most Switch games are playable in handheld mode by design, I can see this working pretty well.

I don't really think this comment means anything though. People always get hyper-focused on statements like this that Nintendo makes and most of the time they end up being inconsequential.

Realistically, I'd say this is just part of that Switch eco-system thing, Iwata briefed about. I doubt they'd make the same mistakes; unless...maybe its like their own Miiverse/Streetpass device. With little different Nintendo games of a niche style (think Nintendo Land), budget titles really. It could also act like a pedometer, to encourage use alongside your smartphone. I dunno, lol.

Evidently, whatever it is, it'll connect to the Switch, I'm sure, so let's wait and see. :p

Must be a back up plan just in case switch fails

I can see it release in the 2018 holiday season if switch doesn't set the world on fire

A smaller, dock-less Switch should definitely be on Nintendo's agenda. I'd be very surprised if they don't do this at some point.

I wouldn't be surprised, Switch has been branded as a Wii U successor from the start.

It's like being surprised when trump does what he has been campaigning.

This would be such a dumb move. Nintendo can't properly support 2 systems without constant months of no releases. I feel like a smaller, portable-only version of the Switch would be a better move. Wait a year or two and sell that for $200 to get into the 3DS price range.

Mistranslation it seems.

But if true, I can't see what the market is for it.

Customer: I am looking for something less powerful than the switch for nearly the same price. I would prefer if it did NOT connect to my TV. I also would like it if Nintendo further separates their dev teams.

Nintendo: We have just what you need!

Nintendo has dominated the portable market since original game boy nintendo switch is a home console with option to play on the go it is priced as home console. Nintendo should not abandon portable market release stand alone portable console le systems and separate mario kart games.

Hmm... how do you sell someone a 3DS2 after selling them a Switch.

It seems like it'd just be a pure downgrade, or a successor to the Switch as well.

Proposal: They looked at the software line-up and price point of the system and decided that it was currently a better idea to market it as a console instead of as a handheld that costs more than a PS4.

When they can get the price down and battery life up in a revision, it's pretty trivial to round up more handheld-esque games and start selling the revision as that.

No, the current Switch isn't a suitable 3DS replacement, but they'll be able to get its Tegra X1 based architecture in a smaller body in the near future.

And there are plenty of portable suitable games announced for NS, just none announced by Nintendo. Because they are still supporting the 3DS.

I don't think the Switch is aimed at the 2DS/3DS crowd right now. The price and marketing tell you that much. A $300 system is not something a parent wants to buy for 2 or more kids. The trailers don't show a lot of kids playing Switch, it's mostly young adults. When the 3DS games stop coming, they're going to want to have that cheap system a parent can buy multiples of for their kids.

I'm betting it's something like this.

Though part of me wants a 3DS successor with a second analog stick that's purely a retro handheld: no new titles. it would play DS/3DS cartridges and any NES/SNES/N64(/GC) Virtual Console title you have on your Nintendo account. It's a cheap entry console for kids/a cheap handheld you can take on trips where you don't want to take your Switch with you.

Trying to start a new brand or continuing the DS line would be strange as the Switch can easily fit both the console and handheld market, otherwise why even make the Switch a hybrid in the first place? Positioning a smaller Switch as mobile only at a cheaper price would allow them to start hitting the market 3DS holds while the dockable more expensive Switch targets the more expensive hardcore crowd.

Kind of like the 3DS and 2DS. 2DS is cheaper in every way and can still play 3DS games while targeting a cheaper market.

It would likely be running the same stuff Switch has and likely play the same games but at an even lower resolution for better battery life for longer travels. You'd get Zelda Breath of the Wild at 540p and no joycons or anything that could sap the battery dry.

Serious question: Why is Kimishima still president? I thought it was only a temporary thing. Nintendo badly needs some young leadership that actually knows how modern times work.

Outside of the phone app they seem to be doing just fine with their current direction for switch.

It was one of the younger devs that didn't want voice chat in splatoon btw,

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Ah the ol' shotgun tactic of response to investors or press.

I'll still go with cheaper version of Switch aka portable only. I just hope they ain't that dumb to have another hardware that won't play switch games.

I'd be down for one but I don't see why it would be financially sound to do so. Might be a misunderstanding at best I think.

The only thing that makes sense is a cheaper ($200±$50), smaller version of the Switch in 2018-2020. If they release a totally separate platform that's not compatible with Switch's hardware and then they plan to support it, Switch, and mobile, the density of their support on each console will suffer greatly. But a cheap Switch portable form factor in a few years would have an amazing library already ready to go.

The only way this would make sense is if Switch completely bombs and they've abandoned it by 2019.

Well yeah, I'm sure we'll get a dock-less Switch sometime next year for like $199. They can market that as the "3DS successor".

2 years from now Transition the Switch into a Cheap handheld aimed at kids while they launch a new Switch 2.0 based on Xavier Tegra. Would basically be exactly what he is arguing right now with the 3DS. Its a low price entry for kids while Switch is aimed at a higher audience.

guys. This is a simple business move.

What good is it saying and the Switch is all we will focus on ever. Its called keeping your options open.

If the Switch bombs...then the 4DS is probably in the works. If it does well...then its not.

Its not that hard of a concept to grasp.
