Part of me thinks that donation drives like these sort of spurn some of these communities into finally saying "Oh yeah, well we're going to make our own event!". Combo Breaker seems to be the premier event for NRS games, KI and Skullgirls--maybe Pokken will start becoming a bigger thing at the Smash events like Genesis and APEX--I bet ARMS may have to establish it's presence at Smash tournaments too.

It's disappointing that these donation drives bring out the uglier competitive side of some communities, but I think it would have happened regardless on if there was one or not.

there'd still be ugliness if EVO just announced a full lineup, but I imagine more of it would be in the form of mcrib and 2 frame overhead jokes instead of people being called autists and gas station robbers because they play a game someone else doesn't like

yea I agree the ppl go hard in on kbr for perceived notions they have on him, but yea kbr shouldnt have said anything especially given how his situation usually is.

I went back to his tweets back on Jan 24th which I perceived is the when the donation was started. No tweets about how he thinks the drive is a bad idea. He also retweets out like maybe a week later of someone donating 1000 dollars to mvc3 and other donations so obviously ppl sharing donations/hyping up the donations wasnt wrong back then. Now it just seems like he's being petty/thinks jwong donated at the last minute and didnt really care about the charity when jwong may have donated earlier/helped out earlier with another amt. But yes at the end of the day I agree, bottom line kbr handled it well at all

Based on my talks with him and his past comments, I don't think he think it's wrong to donate specifically for Marvel. Rather, it's disingenuous to say that you're doing it for the charity when the intent of donating isn't specifically for that reason. Let's be real, this entire thing was never about raising money for charity. It was about deciding who got into Evo and, the money coincidentally went to charity. His comments about doing it anon is his feelings on when someone donate and cares for the charity specifically. That's my interpretation of it anyway.

The entire thing is a far cry from something like GDQ.

You can blame them for knowing that people are shits, recognizing that this drive was going to bring out this kind of resentment, and doing it anyway.

This really isn't limited to the FGC. Any similar drive with stakes like this would be devisive and bring out the worst in some of the people involved.

Yeah, definitely. At least if they decided themselves, I would just complain how TOs don't know how to help foster growth in communities like normal. I'd rather bitch about that then listen to the masses be shits.

If it makes you feel any better Shouta and NWS, I love fighting games and love to complain while not playing them. Still crazy how FGs and games as a spectator sport became a thing this decade.
This community feels a little inside baseball and looking into actual players but that is what I like about the FGC, warts and Marns and all.

So you're saying I'm gonna be MiniBossBattle 2.0? =o

But yeah, there's a lot of physical growth in the FGC in the last decade but at the same time, I'm not sure if the community's trends and practices have kept in lock-step with it.

Well, pitting community vs community in a direction competition is about as ugly as it gets for the FGC on that front. At least if the decision was made uniliaterally, it'd be one group complaining to the powers that be. lol

I feel what you're saying, though I feel like gdq isnt the right way to donate either. specifically the pcf stuff, the msf gdqs are fine

people make that same argument when it comes to the wwe doing all their charity efforts, that it's all being done for publicity. and it is totally done for publicity. but in the end a charity benefits and that's still a big win imo. if waiting for a "right" way to donate means charities get less money, eh i'm okay with a couple nerds getting worked up over videogames.

i never actually paid attention to most of the throw animations in marvel despite playing it for so long so i am just now noticing how wesker's is actually really cool

he grabs the other guy with his feet and the does like, a skateboard trick on them before just stomping on them

i really hope someone figures out the freecam for pc marvel real fast, i wanna get some nice gifs of the animations in this game. a lot of them are really, really top notch.

There are definitely problems with GDQ going with PCF yeah, lol.

I was more speaking to the spirit of the event though. Every donation is specifically with the intent to help that charity and not to decide something else as a result. I mean they do have those donation races but it's fun stuff and not like a spot at the biggest event of the year or something.

Doesn't the WWE just run events with all the proceeds from attendees going to charity? Or are they deciding like who becomes champion as a result? lol

yea I understand. The charity is put in the limelight in gdqs compared to what wiz/evo did here.

mainly wwe sells pink merch and give proceeds to susan g komen from that. they also run their own charity, connor's cure, and do the same merch thing for that. they also send a lot of wrestlers out for make a wish. cena has actually granted more wishes than anyone else who's ever worked with them, over 500 now.

congrats jiyuna!

Watch it be Majin Obama. 2DJazz rises again!

Nah, it's Boeken77. The Mika player that you see paired with JP folks from time to time.

Ah, so the standard stuff. That's a great way of leveraging their fame to help raise money specifically for Susan G Komen.

I knew Cena was very active on that front but I didn't know he had done over 500. I may not like him in the ring but I've always respected him outside it. It's always interesting to see different facets of him. The video of him speaking Mandarin, I think, was quite fantastic.

Time for more Arcana Heart 3 Love Max because its cast is crazy.
Here's some Eko vs Dorothy.
  • Eko is a child whose drawings become real and fight for her so you have to literally fight a child's destructive imagination in the form of her make believe friends made real.
  • Dorothy is a stage magician with a Wizard of Oz theme who uses literal card tricks as attacks. Her card projectiles stay on the field till she makes a full 5 card hand at which point they attack again and the better the hand the better the extra effects. She also has many trap cards and setups.

The "I need a hero" song playing right in the final moments was legendary.

First ever Max Marvel 3 combo video was made to that song. That song always gets me pumped.

I tried to watch that entire Yipes stream archive since I was at work when it was live, but twitch cut out a lot of the audio because of music copyrights. Anyone know a version that still has audio?

Edit: About JWong's donation, I interpreted it as him trying to lead by example. Seeing a large donation by a well-known figure when things were getting down to the wire could potentially convince a few more people to throw in.
