No new Skylanders console game this year, instead new content for Imaginators

On Activision's fiscal call, they confirmed new adventure packs and content for Skylanders Imaginators in lieu of a new Skylanders game.

Think how LEGO Dimensions works for this. There's also a new mobile game as per the other thread.

Explains the Switch version. Just wish it was a better effort, since it was a bit iffy when I tried it. The resolution was sub-720p in portable mode, and likely sub-1080p docked. Visually it looked eh as well.

About god damn time. Less stress on everyone if you do this. All consoles are web-connected and have beefy patch systems in place now. (As opposed to the old Wii where it was a joke, and the Xbox 360 early policies of no free content patches)

Hmm. Common sense says it's Skylanders Academy packs based on the netflx series. As long as there's good length content like you get with the lego dimensions ghostbusters/fantastic creatures sets, rather than one level, I'd be ok.

I guess it might make some sense to sell more figures.
For consumers it used to be "buy this $70 bundle ever year for the right to use these $12 figures" now they can get more content.

I imagine Imaginators might be the last console one though I don't see them announcing this anytime soon.

Interesting news honesty. This would be a great time to make new figures based on Skylanders new & old to tie-in with Skylanders Academy.

Like the first pack could be a bundle containing Spyro (Academy version) and Stealth Elf (Academy Version) with over 2 hours of content based on a few episodes from Season One. Two main levels (which last an hour+ per level) would be a solid deal for 30 bucks I think.

Then you make original Skylanders and other content packs to push for other aspects of Academy and even a sudo-sequel to the story in Imaginators. Very interested to see how Toys for Bob handles things here.

My kid really loved the show so that would be a wise move. If not, I'd guess they are working on a new entry more deeply tied to the cartoon. Hopefully the packs are substantial, this is definitely the most he's enjoyed in a few years.

Spyro 1-3 HD Remake for 2018 must have doubled down in team size then. You could then make figurines based on Elora, Hunter, Moneybags, Zoe, Agent 9, Sheila, Sgt. Byrd, and Bentley.

Id have no interest in an offering like that tbh (pricing and level structure you mention). I've never bought the additional adventure packs, content was never there for me.

The Fantastc Creatures set for Lego Dimensions was around £40 when it launched here and had 6 levels. I want something similar. A figure or twi and 5/6 levels for £40 please.

For toys to life games specifically, a new base game each year seems mostly redundant when functionality can be expanded via patches (and the toys inherently act as physical DLC in the first place).

I was thinking along the lines of the Level Packs from LEGO Dimensions with the comment of Skylanders going that route. Hour+ long in length, one main character and two vehicles.

So with that logic, we could see 20$ and 30$ expansions to Imaginators. Level packs with one Skylander and full adventure packs with two Skylanders.

Hmm i see what you mean but I'm not buying bite sized packs if that's the case. Still intrigued to hear more over the next few months though!

This seems like a pretty sensible direction to go in with a franchise that's arguably skating on thin ice, along with making retailers happier for needing to stock less this holiday season.

Coolio. Not having to buy another game will be nice.
Seeing the game crossover with the show more would be interesting. Kids would LOVE it.

My bet on content for Imaginators being set up like this:
-Level Packs: 20$ releases that contain one Skylander and a full level. These levels would be based on the TV series 'Skylanders Academy' and let you play through an original story set within the series universe. Hour plus long levels containing new parts for your imaginators and unique dialog if you place specific Skylanders on the portal when playing.
-Adventure Packs: 30-40$ releases containing two-three Skylanders and over 5-6 hours worth of content. They offer full stories that either continue the story of the TV show (focusing on Spyro and his friends) or original stories in the Skylanders Universe. There would be a total of 3-5 levels with each one being quite long in length. Even when you beat the game, you have more to do with special platforming challenges, a new race track (to use with SuperChargers cars) and more.
-Discounted Price Points: Base game of Imaginators pushed down to 39.99$ for all versions by the time the first wave of this new content releases. Figures dropped down 20% in price and Imaginator Crystals dropped 40% in price.

As a longtime Skylanders fan since before the first game even launched; this is great news.

The Skylanders series has always bounced between two devs, and each felt pretty disconnected from the previous game. Imaginators actually feels really robust, but the problem has been the lack of content I feel. The main game didn't seem to take as long as previous titles, but there is a lot of post game content in little mini challenge realms.

Adventure Packs have always given the game more life in a few hour extra campaign, but if there's more that's great.

One of the biggest things though will be how this effects Skylanders at retail. Many stores seem to be downgrading their Skylanders area, and some haven't even really had any stock since Christmas. In addition, lots of those adventure packs and other accessories seem to be hard to come by too. There needs to be more stock or maybe they need to sort out the distribution ratios on characters. In addition, they need to figure out about distribution of the new adventure packs. A few years back for Trap Team, one of the extra ones was released for a short period and then never again. As of now its still one of the rarest Skylanders sets and regularly appears on ebay and amazon at $100+ prices. There's no reason they can't print more of them.

For me personally, I usually pick up a majority of my figures during sales in the lead up to the new game since stores have to clear stock out. I probably wont get that chance but maybe they'll still have some decent enough sales through the spring and fall like usual.
