byuu's SNES preservation project: $10k in EU games missing in post. Update: Found!

erhm... why would he even do that? had emuparadise.org or coolroms stopped existing?

Some existing Rom Dumps aren't correct, the point of this project is to make sure there's a 1 for 1 perfect dump of every cart that can be used to assemble a list of checksums for verification (as well as to get have digital copies of the original packaging and manuals for these).

byuu shouldn't feel obliged to reimburse the collector. He's not the one who sent $10K worth of SNES games by regular airmail post with an incorrect value on the customs label instead of by courier.
Depends who chose the carrier/ shipping method and paid for it.

I don't imagine the collector just decided to pay for shipping just out of the goodness of his heart for a transaction he (afaik) was getting nothimg from aside from helping to future proof gaming history.

So, if Byuu didn't want/ couldn't use legit shipping level (most carriers, like DHL here, for cheaper rates, will use local post office delivery when its just a "drop at your doorstep or hold at post office" level)...

It's very much likely to be 100% on Byuu, unless for whatever reason the sender -was- paid a good amount by Byuu to cover a good shipping rate w/ insurance, but he cheaped out to make a buck on the transaction.

Now, I imagine the Collector sender ought to be pissed off, and he really should be the one raising a stink with DHL as he is the customer (sender).

Edit. Wait, he did use DHL and it still got lost? That's not normal. I didn't know DHL handed the package to USPS. I'm pretty sure that when I've received packages sent through DHL, it was them that picked up the package from customs and delivered them directly to my house.

I have had DHL hand stuff off to USPS before. In fact, only a couple of weeks ago USPS lost a package sent by DHL.

Stolen.

Too much paper work for too many eyes to see and all it takes is for a snake sorting packages to realise the cost, the insured tag, and contents.....then boom, he/she pulls a fast one.

I see it happen all the time at UPS.

For important stuff, UPS is the only way.

USPS is just garbage, and FedEx is not that great either, at least in my experience.

He should wait a little longer, in other countries it can take up to 3 months for international packages to arrive, especially if it contains undefined technical items that need to be checked. Most likely he just had luck with the first shipping. As long as the tracking does not state that the shipping is lost, everything seems to be fine.

February 4th, the last sign of life, is less than two weeks ago and under a new administration things can take longer.

People need to read. The package's last step is at a local sorting facility after DHL handed off to USPS. It's already made it across the ocean and through customs.

bish gets all the credit :)
I have had things disappear from tracking for up to three weeks (including the DHL>USPS passover). It just sometimes happens and I hope that's what happened here.

UPS is bad too. They won't steal your package but I worked for them during season and they just QB toss every package there is, regardless of it saying fragile or whatever. That's why all cardboard game boxes will come demolished from UPS.

He should fly there, dump them all, then fly back. It would probably be cheaper too.

Cheaper than buying them outright but he was just being loaned them. Only cost was shipping there/back.

Definitely a safer thing to do though. Last company I worked for when we needed to get prototypes from one end of the world to the other they would just get interns to be mules and put them on carry on luggage.

Although I never worked for USPS, I did work in a FedEx warehouse for a year, and things do get "lost" when a package handler scans the wrong package or forgets to scan a package, and loads it into the wrong truck. The driver will normally return these items, but it is possible the items are got delivered with packages going to a different stop or the driver stole the package as he knows the package was never scanned onto his/her truck. Obviously, if the box was opened its not impossible for someone to try and steal the contents but these warehouses have security you need to pass through every time you enter/leave the building. Long story short is the USPS screwed up and they should have to pay for the contents of the items lost.

Just seems like the number of ways a package can be "lost" greatly outnumbers how it can be legitimately lost (and be unable to be recovered). Delivered to wrong person and they are a dick, sure. Any other mistake should be corrected by the next person that scans it, or at very least returned to sender.

USPS processed 1.6 billion parcels this holiday quarter. Statistically, they're doing a good job.

For valuable/priceless domestic shipments, you can add registered mail as a service, where parcels travel under lock and key, and everyone who touches it needs to sign a log. The Hope Diamond was shipped this way.

fucking USPS

god do they suck ass

although FedEx is just as bad.....they lost hundreds of best buy packages over the holiday. When I went to complain the forum was already flooded with FedEx saying a package was delivered but there was nothing at the house.

I have UPS mychoice and so far its been godlike

But also not doing insurance? WTF are you thinking!!

Why the hell is DHL (or anyone) allowed to just drop off your package with USPS for them to finish the job? I've had that happen with both DHL and UPS. If I'm paying for your service, it's because I specifically don't want USPS touching my package.

Why are they allowed to do this?

USPS is garbage. I routinely have packages go missing, get delivered to the wrong address, or just placed in mysterious places from amazon when they use usps. I've begged for UPS or signature required only, but they're ok with just refunding me money each time.

How hard is it to dump a ROM? the collector guy couldn't just watch a YouTube video and learn how to do it himself instead of shipping his collection back and forth across the world?

Seem's like it would have been way cheaper to just fly to europe and do all the work there with a laptop.

I'm surprised he got anyone to agree to send any amount of games over mail and then back again. What if it got damaged?

Sounds like a terrible idea all around

I ordered a package from Australia in the beginning of last November. A burson V5i op amp for my little dot I+ tube amp.

It didn't come on the delivery date so I contacted Burson and asked if they had any tracking info they could give me. They said that they shipped it the absolute cheapest method through USPS and they didn't have any tracking info... They ended up contacting USPS a few days later and they told me that USPS didn't know where the package was. They lost it somewhere. So Burson promptly sent me another op amp via priority air and it got here like 3 days later.

Fast forward to 3 days ago and the first op amp that I ordered arrived at my doorstep. About 4 months later...

So maybe it will eventually show up? I'll send a couple prayers their way.

Ah that may very well be the case. Poor byuu, he just can't catch a break. :(

One can only hope against hope that actually happens here.

I've had similar things happen more than once. Usually shipments from China though. Stuff comes way after the delivery date. More than once I've gotten full refunds or a new item shipped, only for the original to show up within a few days or weeks.

Shoulda woulda coulda. Crazy the seller agreed to this.

I can only imagine the value of the games was written on the paperwork. If you were a thieving price of crap who can't keep their hands off something that's not theirs that could be mighty tempting.

Hopefully it's just been mislaid somewhere and will get delivered eventually.

People keep going on and on about insurance, that's all well and good, but it isn't going to magic the games back into existance :(

I understand that byuu might be completely disheartened after this, but could he continue the project by the sending the dumping equipment to the cartridge collectors instead of the other way around? I assume the dumping equipment is worth way less than $10k.

Are there any types of GPS devices or tracking devices that can last a week or more... that could've been put in those boxes?

Forget insurance...I'd want my shit back. And I'd go get it back the moment something seemed up.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

It's not like things that are lost by the USPS stop existing.

They're either sitting in a warehouse somewhere or, more likely than not, were stolen.

So let's say the sender and buyer are both able to provide proof of the contents and value of what they sent. Would they be able to claim what they've lost?

You have to do it before you send it.

Think of it this way, if USPS is going to be responsible for $10,000 for every lost package, then every insurance is no longer an option, it'd be mandatory. And since every package sent isn't worth that much, people would demand to only pay the insurance on the value of the package they are sending... and if people don't put the real value, as happened here, then again, USPS wouldn't be at fault.

It sucks, but if you can't afford to lose it, don't send packages without appropriate insurance.

All the major shippers have contracts with the USPS because the USPS delivers to every address in the country. Some places it is not worth the time or effort of the other fuys to deliver to, so they contract out some shipping locations. Likewise, the USPS contracts with FedEx(when I worked for them) to ship parcels overseas.
