The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Yeah, waiting to see how the Metallica tickets are priced. Cheap lawn tickets for Maiden outdoors made that an easy choice, but being at the Rogers Centre just doesn't have the same appeal.

Yeah those were nicely priced. It looks like the cheapo seats at Metallica won't be too expensive either, hopefully will be able to get them without any problems.

Hey well, if either of you want to meet up before or after the show just to say Hi or something I certainly wouldn't be opposed. Not all the time that you have the opportunity to meet fellow gaffers at an event.

Sounds good, will post in here a little closer to the show dates to see who's going.

What's the issue with Dave? He's mellowed out a ton in recent years.

Dave is a far-right, born-again Christian who spends time with Alex Jones. Megadeth won't play songs like "The Conjuring" or with bands that are "too Satanic". He may have calmed down but his views are still deplorable. I like to think he was replaced by a body-double after Countdown was released.

I mean, to me personally I find it silly to hate someone for their lifestyle choices as long as its not hurting anyone and they're not being outwardly offensive. I consider myself to be leftist, but I'm not going to instantly dislike someone because they're on the right, and I've met sane right wingers (I know in this case you're referring to him being far right) and I don't see anything inherently wrong with being a born again christian. I'm also not religious myself, but if that helped him kick drugs and lead a healthier and less aggressive life style more power to him and others that find solace in religion. Though I do think his aversion to playing his old music and with other bands is silly, you can't really blame him for being devout to his religion. As for the Alex Jones thing, that's something that's new to me, though it seems like he only did an interview on the show in 2012? and even then 2012 Dave seems pretty different from current Dave. I'm not going to watch the interview because I'd prefer to avoid anything Alex Jones is involved in, but is it the fact that he appeared on the show what bothers you or the content discussed in the interview? if its the former then I also personally find that to be silly, if its the latter then I can't fault you either.

I certainly prefer early Dave in terms of his political views and music (for the most part. I thought Dystopia was great) I can't really hate a dude for turning his life around, even if its one that doesn't really line up with my own. That being said he's said plenty of unsavory things that I wouldn't blame anyone for disliking him over, but again he seems to have shut up about all that though Dystopia lyrics are suspect.

Mustaine's stupid views are offensive though
offensive to people with brains

Meh. He made better music when he was on drugs than as a Christian

'Course you can.

won't deny that much, but hey, at least the dude is alive and has a functioning family. His life could've turned out a lot worse had he continued down on that path and I'd rather see a healthy religious Mustaine than one doing drugs on the streets.

But anyway, that was just my two cents, of course anyone else is free to disagree with my views and assessments.

So, I just discovered Soen. Opeth much? The first song on their new album Sectarian even pulls an Opeth riff (around 4:00). Nice to hear Lopez's drumming again. What do you all think of their new album?

Saw Anthrax last night doing Among the Living, they were excellent and firing on all cylinders, Kreator up next in a few weeks.

Anthrax are my favorite live band of the big four

Saw Anthrax twice last year and they were great both times. Not a huge fan of the new album but they put on a good show. Its weird, I used to listen to them in the late eighties/ early nineties, saw them live with Bush as their singer and didn't enjoy it and stopped listening to them. Fast forward 20 years and ended up seeing them live and became a fan again.

Looking forward to seeing them again (and Megadeth for the first time) at Chicago Open Air.

Immolation (NY) - Destructive Currents

preview for the new LP "Atonement" which will be released on the 24th. Even if I'm at odds with their more recent efforts getting a little too much polish, I can't deny that their songwriting has still been a cut above the rest in modern death metal. Admittedly their last one didn't elicit a barrage of plays from me, but this track is really great and the production just a tad less slick to my ears. I'm actually pretty hype for this album despite not actively anticipating it 'til recently. Also shout outs to their best logo.

Yeah I effing love the old Immolation logo, glad to see it back! Majesty and Decay was a straight banger that I still spin to this day, can't wait to hear the rest of the new album! No one writes riffs like Robert Vigna, they're so damn sinister.

Suffocation, Immolation, Skinless, Malignancy, New York Death Metal can't be stopped!

Today at work I was keeping it TRUE: Lonewolf, Wizard, Stormwarrior, Portrait, Satan, and of course MERCYFUL FATE!

I don't care if I only make $8.75 an hour, having a job where I can blast metal all day RULES.

Mustaine is a moron.

He was hilarious in Some Kind of Monster.

Also in case I haven't posted enough today, I just found out about this band called Ritualization and if you're into Angelcorpse style death metal then you have to check these guys out.

Yeah, i heard their new album last week, there is definitely some Opeth in it, pretty good band it seems.
I still think Anciients is way closer to it though. I mean, just comparing bands to Opeth, not the music quality itself.

I liked the album. I don't really see a ton of Opeth influence, though. More Tool than Opeth, actually. Still good, but nothing totally mind blowing or anything.

It is nice to hear Lopez's drumming, but he really isn't doing much impressive with Soen compared to his Opeth days. I'm not sure without the Opeth resume I would have noticed him just listening to Soen.

I've got no clue on what buying second hand tickets is like so, someone inform me: how likely and how expensive would it be for me to get a decent ticket to a Metallica show in a couple months?
They start at $150 here

I know this doesn't answer your question, but weren't you looking at the Toronto show? There are cheapo seats for 55 CAD, that's what I did.

Yeah planning on heading to Toronto, but it'll be my first Metallica show and second major concert (with the first being the day before) so I wanna have a good view of the stage, ya feel?

Ah okay, don't blame you! Just wanted to make sure you had seen the whole range. :)

This will be my second time seeing Maiden and Metallica each...and quite possibly the last, too.

Not gunna lie, the thought of Maiden calling it quits soon was a pretty big deciding factor on me grabbing tickets. I wanted to see Motorhead a couple years ago at riot fest and decided against it and well...yeah lol.

Really shocked no one has mentioned YOB and the condition of their frontman, Mike...
Get well soon

I had no idea, just read about it now after your comment, it seems he is doing better? Hope he recovers well.
Haven't listened to YOB in a while, underrated band.

Doing much better. They've met half their GoFundMe goal in one day - medical bills and such.
Saw them back in 2015 with Witch Mountain and they killed it. Such an underrated band.

I need to lose some weight before my knee surgery, so I am looking for good melodic/energetic albums available on Youtube for exercising purposes. To shorten my daily cardio exercise on a stationary bike.

Painkiller from Judas Priest is one of that albums for example.

Rust in Peace maybe, it has a lot of melody.

Somewhere out in Space by Gamma Ray, Evolution Purgatory by Persuader, first two Iron Savior albums, Falconer's debut, first Savage Circus album, first four Blind Guardian albums, Shadows by Sinbreed, The Hall of the Olden Dreams and The Gates of Oblivion by Dark Moor. That was basically all European power metal but that's what comes to mind when I think melodic and energetic. This song always gets me pumped.

Saw a Facebook ad that the new Six Feet Under album was basically just written by the Brain Drill guitarist and laughed

Finished product isn't what I had hoped for (bullshit technical with bad vocals). It's just a continuation of Six Feet Under becoming "Chris Barnes hires talented fans to write OK attempts at old Cannibal Corpse"

At a certain point just call it Hammer Smashed Barnes or something if you aren't pumping out your shitty weed caveman Obituary songs

EDIT: here's a link whatever it sucks

It sucks that a sick bassist like Jeff Hughell with loads of techincal skill is playing in a mediocre slow ass death metal band like SFU.

Also Chris Barnes is basically an anti-marijuana ad campaign made flesh.

It's like he dressed up for Halloween as Swamp Thing and then never showered again.

It's so funny to me how SFU was completely irrelevant for years, then suddenly they put out a decent album with Rob from Chimaira and toured quite a bit.

Now they're back to being completely irrelevant

I enjoy the stupidity of Maximum Violence and had a good time the two times I saw them but yeahhhh it's time to hang it up Chris

Both Skull Fist albums are awesome. Enforcer - From Beyond or Death By Fire, Striker - any album I guess, Holy Grail - Crisis in Utopia, Cauldron - Chained to the Nite, Ambush - Desecrator, White Wizzard - Over the Top, Scanner - The Judgement, Crystal Eyes - Killer, Megahera - Metal Maniac Attack, Monument - Hair of the Dog or Renegades. edit: new Battle Beast album is out tomorrow, guess you can check them out as well.

Fuck it, that's enough for now. For something not metal but pretty much metal, just listen to Dance with the Dead - B-sides Vol 1.

I overlooked the second Skull Fist album because I really didn't dig how the vocals are produced but yeah this rips

First Holy Grail EP was killer, everything after that was really uninteresting and modern sounding to me. Which sucks because they added Alex from BBB who's really talented but bleh. I remember when they first started talking about Crisis In Utopia and how they were influenced by bands like Lamb Of God and it was like ".......what?"

The vocals on Chasing the Dream do have a little too much reverb, but still think the album completely rips.

As for Holy Grail, I did like Ride the Void and Times of Pride, but haven't listened to them nearly as much as Crisis in Utopia, so yeah, they're kinda just there. Just skimmed through em both again, Ride the Void I should check out more, Times of Pride and Peril is pretty meh.

Good call on Painkiller.

Try early Queensryche if you somehow haven't already.

The Queensryche EP, The Warning, Rage for Order, and Operation Mindcrime are all on youtube.

The latter is also on Spotify if you prefer.

Oh, and of course, an album every metal fan should listen to:
