The Curious Case of the Switch Foxconn Leak (Now a hardware fanfiction thread)

It's not going to be close to 1050 and Volta isn't ready yet, so I seriously doubt the 4cu of the next Tegra chip being used either.

16nm is likely given the Foxconn leak seems to be the best we have atm, and you just aren't going to get those clocks on 20nm. I want to say that the most likely configuration is still 2cu at 921mhz, maybe the cpu clock was high though to test the stress of the system, however they were running a vulkan test for throttling, so maybe it was still changed. Western developers have been working with Nintendo too, and if Capcom's ram request was answered, a western dev's request for more cpu power could also be answered.

The Foxconn leak said the soc was around 100mm that can accommodate a custom variation of the X1 chip, calling it the n1 or x2 in this regard makes sense.

These people tearing the device down. Might be able to tell it's 16nm and if so, they would call it the "x2" and say the performance is between xb1s and ps4pro because that is what all the misguided tech sites are doing, saying that the chip is twice as powerful... It's likely just a slight upgrade 16nm x1 that has been customized.

this device has become such a mystery to me. We haven't heard one bad thing about the specs. NO WAY this is an underclocked X1 on 20nm. Capcom said they wanted more RAM not processing power.... so that can be taken a lot of ways but underpowered doesn't seem to be one for me. Is it possible the API's created for switch are just that good in getting and making ports from xb1 and ps4 not difficult?

Or you know, it's a thin tablet handheld that comes with physical limitations on the hardware and that sets certain expectations.

Expecting a lot more from this form-factor is just not realistic.

Then again we haven't seen any footage from actual ports, except for snake pass which got its framerate cut in half. That's fine for that game but if your framerate is targeting 30 on the other platforms, what kind of compromises do you need to make for it to run decently on Switch?

Nobody is expecting a lot more,. 16 mm, better CPU and double bus width is all perfectly possible to do in a portable form factor and would make the system much more capable.

Indeed, I'm really excited to see how well current gen ports are running on the Switch. I mean, the form factor is really, really small. If AAA PS4 games with great graphics run on the Switch and are looking good as well this is a really amazing technical archievement.

I am German and that sounds a little strange. They are speaking of Tegra X2 and list 2nd generation maxwell in their system specs. I would not put much weight in their "findings".

Bild is the biggest tabloid newspaper in Germany (like the Sun in the U.K.) still some of their departments are well informed. Can't speak about the games department though...

they are not listing it in their spec sheet. They are saying
"if we believe what this internet board(neogaf) posted, then the spec sheet should look like this"

"Interesting, the graphic chip is a tegra x2...."

Haha, those Computerbild guys have changed their article, and have now included a part where they speculate (rather than state) stuff about the chip. Their result:
Computerbild said:
... scheint „Xavier” jedoch der heißeste Kandidat für die Switch zu sein.
Computerbild said:
... it would seem that "Xavier" is the hottest [i.e. most likely] candidate for the Switch.
So, instead of removing the X2 mention, they triple down by not only stating it could be X2, but even suggesting Xavier would be a good fit! Seems like they didn't read this thread after all!
For good measure: I am not ruling out Pascal (like) improvements to the chip, or potentially full Pascal (the difference is quite immaterial at that point).

Will eat all the crow served if it turns out true in any capacity, but I give it 0.1% chance.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I suppose this is the correct thread for this, after all

Thanks to this Mark, we have our first look at the back of a Nintendo Switch cart

But they are indie devs, and all due respect to them one could think that a big dev house can do a lot more...

Not exactly fair to consider them an indie dev, they usually make games for big publishers but are just independently publishing this game

We can't have a Switch Thread without your pollution. Weren't you the one going on how stated battery life is crappy and falsely comparing game run time battery life of the Switch to general usage to an iPad mini? Or post after post goes on how no one want the damn thing and how it isn't comparable to the Xbox One or the PS4?

Looking at above quote, what did Tron#1 write to even insulate anything about Switch power levels? What did Tron#1 write wouldn't be possible in the Switch form factor?

30 to 60fps takes 2x the processing power, right? At the very least PS4 is 2x as powerful as the switch when you take modern architecture and fp16 into account(fp16 being situational based on the engine and devs that take advantage of it). Imagine 400 GFLOPs X 1.33x(NVIDIA architecture efficiency) X 1.7x(fp16 on unreal up to 70% like ubisoft claims)= 884 G Flops. And that's just based on Eurogamer. If it was foxconn, it would push it above 1000TFLOPs.

All fun speculation of course. The switch version is supposed to be 30fps locked, while ps4 is unlocked. So we'll see if either holds a steady 30 or 60 frames.

I don't think framerate is directly tied to GPU power like that. CPU power has a big effect on framerate for instance. That's one of the things where it will depend very greatly on how a developer chooses to optimize the game.

a chinese kid in both cases?
Please rehost :p

Very cool! I wonder what we can determine from this... probably not much yet.

It has the same shield and is using the same labelling format as a Tegra chipset but with the added (O/U?)DNXN2 A" model tag at the bottom half. Seems like it's indeed a custom Tegra chip made by Nvidia for the Nintendo NX/Switch.

Edit: Higher rez pics just came up, it's the model tag is (?)DNX02-A2.

DNX2 now we know why the other side said x2.

Don't know if I can post it XD anyway everything match what the "Foxconn Leak" before

Oh ok, i thought there was an analysis from the guy who did the teardown and i was curious to read it. Shouldn't be a problem at all (you just posted them), but you can remove the links if you want, the pics are fine. Thanks :)

Is it possible that we are underestimating the Switch's power? I mean..Nintendo has really gone all out with the hardware so far by their standards. A capacitive IPS screen, JoyCons with a TON of tech inside, etc. Their unexpected partnership with Nvidia. Two years ago, these facts would have been dismissed as fantasy on GAF. Then we have some Japanese developers stating that they don't understand how Nintendo managed to sell the Switch at that price--implying that they expected a higher price tag. Taking all that into consideration, it doesn't sound like they are simply using an underclocked X1 chip. Maybe Nintendo and Nvidia struck some crazy deal and Switch is a lot beefier than we originally thought?

C'mon guys, it's nice and all to have these pics but they don't confirm the Foxconn clockspeeds hahaha

It would be absolutely great if we could at least get the RAM model.

Then how does that explain Eurogamer's leaked speeds being "final for launch"?
Because the Eurogamer kit was an earlier kit than the October(?) one. Maybe the dev that gave them the information thought it was the final iteration. Do we know if the letter that said these specs were the final specs was officially from Nintendo?

Obviously Snake Pass isn't close to pushing the PS4 even at 60 ;)

I see a lot of delusional people in this thread. Near GTX 1050 performance? A GTX 1050 fits into thick laptops. I don't see that level of performance in a small tablet. Jesus guys. You are setting up yourself for disappointment.

I don't understand the jump from those pictures to confirming the Foxconn clocks. Can somebody run me through the logic of it?

It could be this, but even at best case scenario its still far below an XB1 and will recieve endless scorn for that.
Better to keep expectations in check, its still a nice piece of tech from Nvidia though

better to keep our hopes low.. Got burned out by Wii U specs in the RUST threads back then. /:

Same. Foxconn leak has 20% more power for GPU and almost 2x as much as eurogamer for CPU, and its a 16nm node. But we can't tell just yet what the clock speeds are or if its 16nm or 20nm node.. right?
