DF - Horizon is a technical masterpiece on PS4 and Pro

Horizon's excellent performance at checkerboard 4K vs the native 1080p of the base PS4 version is a great achievement. While the Pro hardware has 2.3x the GPU power of the standard model, memory bandwidth hasn't scaled in step - and it's rare that we see a PS4 engine scale so gracefully between 1080p on base hardware and 4K on Pro (checkerboard or otherwise). That Guerrilla has achieved this with no impact to performance is impressive enough, but the team has pushed the envelope here, handing in more visual enhancements over the base version of the game.

While Horizon would be lauded for its resolution boost alone, what we like about the title's presentation is that Guerrilla has accepted that it's not just the pixel-count alone that matters - more is required to deliver a great 4K presentation. With that in mind, we were really happy to see improvements to resolution on some textures. Also worthy of praise is a marked increase in texture filtering quality. Lower levels of anisotropic filtering on base hardware can stand out on a 1080p image - but the effect is much more pronounced at 4K. Thankfully this is not an issue with Horizon.

The subtitle they used on Twitter is "Horizon Zero Dawn is PS4 Pro's best 4K presentation yet."

Good news! I'm so friggen sick of buying games at launch and having them be busted up for months. I can go back to being excited instead of wondering if I got ripped off again being a paid beta tester™

Finally, we're getting games actually designed to take advantage of the Pro, rather than as an afterthought. I hope more of Sony's first party titles do this, I doubt we'll see third parties going this far.

One thing that's interesting, the game still has no patch. It's so rare to see a game with no patch notes available.

I know it'll have a small day 1 patch (~250mb) but it's cool that they shipped a game in such great shape.

Both has solid 30fps and good frame pacing.

Guys, trolling only works if you acknowledge it. No one PM'd a moderator. Instead, you all responded to an obvious low quality troll by quoting it 90 times. The troll got exactly what he wanted. Don't. do. that.

Amazing technical achievement.

Apparently the game is incredibly good too. Even if it's not on my console of choice I'm happy to see such stellar new games being made and not just by the books sequels.

Well done guerrilla, you've outdone yourselves!

This game was basically my insurance for preordering the pro. I'm glad it turned to be a great game on a technical and gameplay level. For some reason this generation didn't really click with me yet but it's definitely getting there.

Seeing Horizon running on a PS4 Pro and a 4K HDR TV at a PS event way back convinced me to buy all three things. Today is a great day :)

On cellular, can't watch the video, but I really like the work those two DF lads do.

Never seen a first post ruin a thread that bad before. What the heck was that all about in that other thread.

I was really hoping that after reviews were out all the horizon shit posts would stop but I guess I expected to much of people.

On topic - This is fantastic news and bodes well for future first party output on the pro and base PS4 since we know sonys devs all work together from time to time . This seenms to be a great presentation on both pro and base PS4s.

EDIT: OH SHIT DEATH STRANDING IS GOING TO BE GORGEOUS, NO WONDER KOJIMA PICKED THIS ENGINE

Glad to see Guerilla's optimization work at play here to great effect, looks like a good job all around

and no day 1 patch required for good performance either? Seems like the first time this gen

I half wish a photomode hadn't been implemented... it'll take me long enough to complete the game without that distraction :3

game looks gorgeous and seems to play pretty well too. Can't wait to try it.

probably a silly question but there isn't a multiplayer aspect to Horizon is there? I hope not, doesn't seem like it would fit the game too well (atleast the way I pictured it)

Best looking open world game that also runs like charm. Amazing job Guerilla and cant wait to see what Kojima can do with this brilliant engine in a couple of years.

Also thx DF.

Damn I totally forgot that. I hope even more devs get access to this engine. It always made me kinda sad that naughty dog had this magical engine and no one else is able to use it.
Sucker Punch also have a great engine as proven by inFamous: Second Son and First Light. Infact I think the first party devs at Sony have a lot of options when it comes to game engines.
