Ultimate Muscle is the best dubbed anime I have ever seen. Believe it!

So the request for more anime threads that are not Naruto got me making this. Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy is the localized version of Kinnikuman II-sei anime and it is, by far, the best thing ever.

Here's why-

It completely pisses all over the drama

Kinnikuman II-sei follows the usual Shonen tropes. MC meets progressively stronger opponents and, through forging bonds, defeats them with the power of friendship.Occasionally a character or two might have to die.

Ultimate Muscle says nuts to all that. Character arcs get scrapped, emotional bonds are not formed and everybody's either an idiot or an unrepentant douchebag. Meat's father, Munch, is turned from a wise old sage to a creepy asshole nobody likes and his death is changed to him having simply broken a hip.

Localized anime is no stranger to taking creative liberities but I'd argue the 'core' of the show is more or less preserved. Here, absolutely nobody grows or changes.

JP:

*Mars being taken away*
Kevin: Mars, next time I hope you fight the Muscle League with no dirty tricks.

DUB:

*Mars being taken away*
Mars: ....squealer.
Kevin: Heey, that was uncalled for. So what if I betrayed my father to Mars and then betrayed Mars about the betrayal? I know two wrongs don't make a right but I have three wrongs! That's one right with a wrong to spare. I'm in the clear!

Everybody's a stereotype and it works

Because the show is basically about the antics of wrestlers from around the world, everybody gets an accent. This has the unfortunate (but hilarious) side effect of turning every character into a walking stereotype. It even bleeds into the storyline. Lord Flash, who is secretly the Russian Warsman, can't stop saying comrade.

JP

Kuroi: ...
Kevin: Is something the matter, Kuroi?
Kuroi: No. I will fulfill my duty as Kevin Mask's second.
Kevin: Good.

DUB:

Kevin: Lord Flash, is something the matter?
Flash: No, comrade...err, I mean Kevin. Everything's fine.
Kevin: Lord Flash, I'm beginning to suspect you're not who you say you are.
Flash: What makes you say that?
Kevin: Your frequent slips of the tongue, your inability to raise your finger while drinking tea all point to the fact that you're not an Englishman. Am I right, COMRADE??
Flash: Gah!

It turned Dik Dik van Dik into the show's MVP

And this. This guy is the real reason why I love this Dub so much.

Gazelle Man is a fairly uninteresting and pathetic character. He'd give Yamcha a run for his money. He's so pathetic that the authors made a few stand-alone chapters to try and inflate his terrible win/loss record. The dub not only embraces Dik Dik van Dik's loser status, it outright RUNS with it. Characters who've never heard of Dik Dik would rub it in his face.

Combine that with a great voice and I just love everything about this guy.

Dik: The buck stops here.
*awkward silence*
Dik: Don't you get it? The buck. stops. here. I'm a buck. A male deer. That's what a Dik-Dik is.
*awkward silence*
Dik: What is wrong with you people?? Vote for me! The buck stops here for goodness sake!
Announcer: Dik-Dik van Dik. But seriously, just call him Dick
Dik: It's Dik-Dik!

So who here watched and loved Ultimate Muscle? And if you think you've seen a better localized show, I'd love to be proven wrong. Believe it!

I just remember it having a really good intro, I think I need to watch it to completion at some point. But yeah I remember the English dub being pretty good.

Wasn't the dub for this so well received that they literally made more episodes just so they could localize it for the west?

Also loved that episode where Dik-Dik finally wins a match and even in victory people reminded him about being a loser by over emphasizing how it was his first win.

The best thing is that they changed the names of the whole family that organized the tournaments into parodies of the McMahons

Yeah. The poison six pack arc is commissioned for the west first. It got dubbed in Japanese after!

That's gotta be a historical feat!

I definitely have to start watching this

I remember seeing the intro as a kid (which is amazing) but only really watched other shows on 4kids

Dubs like this are why I'm super in favor of localization. Yeah it changes the source material, but if it makes me enjoy the resulting media even more as a result I'm a okay with that.

Kevin Masks "three wrongs" speech was the best fucking thing. Been years since I heard it and I still laugh at it.

As a kid I absolutely loved Samurai Pizza Cats and thought it was fucking hilarious. I later on found out that was because the ones dubbing it apparently lost the show's script and just made shit up.

I howled out loud at Mars grunting "squealer". Show added so much more lines of dialogue.

Mac Metaphor and Doc Nakano got a truckload of extra lines. This dub truly did a better job with the material's wresting roots than the source material itself.

I remember like Shaman King, watching random episode on 4Kids. I probably should sit down and actually watch it all one day.

I also remember playing the GameCube game at Kmart all the time on the demo station.

A good example of this is the BoBoBo dub they aired on Toonami

I loved this series so much back in the day that I ended up hunting down the Galactic Wrestling PS2 game (still a top 10 fave wrestling game).

Also I'm usually anal about dubs but I couldn't help but enjoy every second of it.

(Sidenote: Dik Dik van Dik might be the worst anime jobber ever. He's completely useless but one of the funniest parts of the entire show).

In South America they aired an anime called Koni-Chan that was so bad that nobody gave a crap for it in Japan, but the mexican dubbers decided to change the entire script giving us one of the most beloved animes in Chile at least

Also duel masters changed the script too, to the point that a series that was created to promote a TCG barely mentioned the game, and also included greg the bunny

Oh yeah, i had never heard of this anime myself until a friend told me about it precisely because the dubbers went wild with it.

That's a bit misleading. While the dub of Duel Masters changed a bunch of stuff, the Japanese original was already a comedy anime.

I'm hoping discotekmedia picks up the license for this eventually. They've been doing pretty good treatments for a lot of these older series (Fighting Foodons just got one).

But at least showed the tcg? with yugioh they made lots of rules out of the fly, but watching it you could still understand the idea behind the game

with duel masters I never understood how to play the game besides it used mana like magic. there was nothing that helped you follow the game or the rules

I consider this the finest dub 4Kids managed to make. They played to their strengths (bad jokes, lots of cheese and hammy overacting) and it worked out spectacularly.

I'm really hoping for this as well. They were my heroes for licensing and releasing all of the Monster Rancher anime. Fighting Foodons getting picked up is a shocker, but it makes me more hopeful for Ultimate Muscle getting rescued.

I haven't seen Ultimate Muscle, so i can't compare, but I think the Dragon Ball Super dub is really good too.

It's actually the first time I've liked a dub above the Japanese version and I"ve been watching animes since "It's a GUNDAM!" toonami.

Decided to try it out. Watched episode 47 to see Dik Dik Van Dik team up with Wally Tusket vs ...a french tagteam consisting of one character named Mr Cheeks whose face is a butt who is a giant stinky frenchman joke and the other guy is quite literally a frog.

Even Samurai Pizza Cats didn't pun this often.

All I remember from Ultimate Muscle is the match where one wrestler who has a literal butt for a face get dunked into another wrestler who has a literal toilet for a head. I've long intended to go back and watch that insanity again as an adult. Bobobo-bo Bobobo held up as an adult, I have high hopes for Ultimate Muscle as well.

That ghost stories clip is amazing
The whole anime was very much worth watching even after seeing a lot of the funny moments in those clips. It's like riffing on a so bad it's good movie, but the voice actors are riffing on it with you.

I agree. I think their most problematic dubs (I'll single out One Piece and Yugioh) is that they still tried to play it fairly straight/cool, but they added enough stupid jokes to kill the mood. When they went for straight translation, it was fine. When they went for just joking the hell out of everything, it was pretty good.

Shaman King straddles this line pretty effectively too imo.

Never watched much of ultimate muscle but what I saw was pretty good

I remember that show, it was good background noise back during college.

That's the one where near every episode the main character breaks into that cow and rice song right? There would be talking, and suddenly... cow and rice song.

Spanish Koni-chan is the greatest ever. It's bananas

That's one heck of a rant dissing a political party in the process lmao

Shin-chan comes close second.

Its a carryover gag from the previous series wherein his father would do the same at dramatic moments
