Edge #304 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild special

Because it has the potential to corrupt. 'We'll give you the game early because you're a magazine, but you can only publish the review early if you give it a [number] or above."

I mean, if this review was a 7 there would be no way in hell Nintendo would let them publish it before everyone else.

It's kind of lame to say think your first statement is the correct one though. Everyone everywhere has been praising the hell out of the game comparing (and often going further) it to Ocarina.

So far this game seems like it is going to deserve those numbers.

Previous Edge 10s for comparison:

Super Mario 64 well yeah
Gran Turismo yeah
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time hell yeah
Halo: Combat Evolved yeah,i suppose
Half-Life 2 yeah
Halo 3 oh hell no.
The Orange Box as overall quality, yeah
Super Mario Galaxy nah.
Grand Theft Auto IV oh no,no,no
LittleBigPlanet nah
Bayonetta hell yeah!
Super Mario Galaxy 2 hell yeah!
Rock Band 3 in its genre..maybe?
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword nah
The Last of Us didn't play it,but thye say it's a yeah
Grand Theft Auto V didn't play it
Bayonetta 2 nah,more a 9 with the first one a 10.
Bloodborne didn't play it

still an impressive collection of games, but an edge 10 now it's not a rare breed like it was in the earlier years, and nowhere as consistent.

I remember the time Metroid Other M managed to squeeze by with an 8 outta 10 from EDGE.

In general, it's really odd that game got as many decent reviews as it it did.

Ew, they gave Skyward Sword a 10? Implies both games are equal, even without having played one I know it's not true.

Like I said. I'm sure it's great. I'm sure the reviewer and such isn't consciously biased. I'm just saying I don't like these embargo breaking reviews sanctioned by the publisher. It just looks bad.

But I'm sure the game will get plenty of 10s. The issue isn't the score itself. I frankly don't care what the actual score is.

EDGE has too long established a reputation for this to even be a concern.

Considering the amount of love Wind Waker gets, I don't think they're actually that important to a lot of people

Luckily the overworld in this game looks far more interesting than WW

Well despite being sort of open world, Wind Waker still had 7 traditional dungeons though.

6, unless you consider the Forsaken Fortress a dungeon. And I'm not even sure I'd consider Ganon's tower a traditional dungeon, so 5.

Even if you consider those two as dungeons, they're incredibly short.

So you say. But you can't deny that having an early review for one of the biggest games of the year (and a new console launch game) could see a massive boost in sales.

I'm not saying that it's dirty. I'm saying that it has the potential. And I don't like it. So when a review for a game comes out before everyone else and the reviewer clearly got preferencial treatment (no way they got the game at the same time as everyone else), yeah, it's slightly concerning. Again. Nothing to do with the game. I'm sure it'll score gangbusters.

I know GAF has a massive hateboner for that game because it destroyed their waifu Samus' non-existant character but 8 is a fair enough score for it I'd say. It had its problems like the Where's Wally pixel hunt sections and unstoppable cutscenes, but the core gameplay was great.

9 for Horizon seems pretty damn good.

Reggiewhatswrongwithyou.gif

Edge has had that priveledge for many many years. They also condistently score lower than almost else (by like a good 7 points).

They're not a magazine you should worried about leniently scoring a game when you compare them to pretty much everyone else.

So depending on how you view FT, then yeah, between 6 and 7 dungeons. Ganon's tower I would persoanlly consider a dungeon too. It may be shorter in some cases or longer such as Twilight Princess. Although Wind Waker may be only 2-3 more dungeons than what BoTW will potentially have, the important distinction I think is the WW had labyrinth styled mazes which adds a lot more meat to the dungeons. I could be completely wrong in saying this, won't know until I've played it, but for all we know, 2 BoTW dungeons may actually be worth 1 full dungeon in comparison to past 3D zelda games.

When you grade art, it's about the experience of it. Or at least that's all it should be. If someone absolutely loved their time with a game, a score of 10 makes sense. It doesn't mean the game is perfect. It just means the enjoyment of the experience far overshadowed the faults. And that could also depend on a lot of factors going on around the person's life. Whether that be recent games or personal highs and lows.

So I don't really have any problem with a 10 score. It just tells me that the game hit the exact right notes at this point in someone's life. It could be the exact opposite for someone else. In other words don't take it so seriously, it's just someone's opinion.

What an amazing start to the year. Plenty or great games all around. I'd love to play Zelda to see what they hype's all about but I'll probably wait for a price drop for the switch first.

I like the way you phrase a 10. I disagree with how you approach reviewing. Just like with anything else, a review should be an objective determination of quality based upon certain agreed upon metrics.

"The feels" are certainly a metric that insert themselves rather voraciously into game reviews. But can we blame that for being a metric? One's reaction to art, as you put it, in and of itself is kind of art, or sort of has to be.

Good shit. Well deserved for Nioh and my preorders for Zelda and Horizon are set. How the hell are you supposed to find time for all these games lately?

Also, still can't believe they gave a 'perfect' score to Skyward Sword. It was good, but had some serious design flaws (Controls mainly) that got in the way of just enjoying the game too often... but if they weren't bothered then whatevs.

I do think it is worth raising an eye brow at this. I have posted that Edge were up front about the conditions this game was reviewed under (on Nintendo UK's hardware, presumably at their offices or a location decided by Nintendo UK). We also know they spent a good amount of time with the game. In addition to this the review was slightly critical and last month's issue was reasonably critical of the hardware itself. Nintendo UK generally doesn't seem to care about the score that much is my impression.

Perhaps if Official Nintendo Magazine UK were still running they would be running the exclusive review. Multi format or Nintendo focused game press in the UK is fairly slim. Edge is a really smart choice considering who the audience for this game is on day one.

And that's what I was concerned about regarding the dungeons. I get the feeling once the honeymoon phase is over with this game, people will look back and criticise the lack of traditioal dungeons because at the end of the day, they are one of the core components of a Zelda game. At least for me anyway. *sighs*

Because 120 mini dungeons counts as nothing?

10 from Edge pretty much guarantees this Zelda will be received about as well critically as the rest of the mainline series, something some were having doubts about.

Also that 9 for Horizon makes me so happy.

Saw the OP and was prepared to eat all of the crow until I read reviews from writers I actually care about in Eurogamer, The Guardian and Kotaku UK. About what I'd expect from Guerilla. I'm calling an Edge 7, maybe a generous 8.

Hmmm.

Not this again. If you could review objectively, then you could get one robot to review everything. Multiple sites doing it would be utterly pointless. Opinions are fine.

A video game review can't be objective. It's an art form, a review of which will always be subjective.

It's gonna be weird playing a zelda game
without heart containers? I think you upgrade your health and stamina in a different way.

...

A well established magazine doesn't throw away their good standing and reputation with their audience for short-term sales.

Not if they're all using the same design and aesthetics. The approach here seems to be quantity over quality. To be honest, I don't expect the majority of these shrines to take more than 5 minutes to go through. Sure, there may be the odd shrine here or there that will take slightly longer, but I honestly doubt it would be approaching the length of a traditional dungeon which would be about 1.5-2 hours. Not only that, nothing suggest they will be themed any different to the shrines we've already seen.

The shrines are there to make up the numbers and plot useful points on the map to fill out the huge world. In fact I read an article from Aonouma just recently exclaiming that they could have added more dungeons in the game but decided not to and focused on the shrines instead. You know, I'd be okay with 4-5 dungeons if they were fully fleshed out. I know people bring up Majoras Mask only having 4 dungeons too, and that's right, but some of them were quite complex and not straight forward to go through.

I wouldn't be surprised if two of the dungeons in this game equals 1 dungeon from MM or any other modern 3D Zelda game. After all GI notes the dungeon are shorter than traidtional ones we're used to.
