The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Preview Thread

I don't see why we need Aonuma to be heavily involved in another Zelda game. Somebody more knowledgeable feel free to correct me, but isn't the director more responsible for the direction/creative vision of the game? That'd be Hidemaro Fujibayashi in this case.

I'm sure they can survive without him nearby. Let him do his thief thing.

also I was supposed to be done with this thread. I keep coming back. This week is going to be painful.

With Nintendo, the producer is usually the one calling the shots.

Check the credits for most Mario and Zelda games, Miyamoto has been the producer 95% of the time.
Mario World and 64 where produced by Miyamoto, directed by Tezuka. Same with most Zelda games.

As for this engine...well, the Zelda team is going to keep using it for the DLC. Beyond that, I'm sure the engine and its tech will be shared within Nintendo. Perhaps you might see a fast follow-up to BotW using the same engine (similar to OoT/MM), but the DLC has me skeptical that that will happen.

At some point though they're gonna have to stop supporting the Wii U with the same DLC as Switch, and move on to a Switch-exclusive Zelda that utilizes the system's power and unique features.

I honestly wonder if, assuming they make more BotW DLC, they'll keep making it all available on Wii U as well as Switch, or if at some point they'll make Switch-exclusive DLC. The Shrine mechanic is like perfect for the JoyCons and HD Rumble, it'd be a shame if we have to wait another ~5 years to get a proper Switch Zelda (I mean console style, as I'm suer the handheld Zelda team is already working on something).

On Mario 64, Miyamoto was credited as both producer and director, while Tezuka and Koizumi were credited as assistant directors. Also, possibly of interest (originally posted by Mak, in another thread):

Miyamoto's Tokyo Univ. Lecture (7/3/2003)

Instructor: When I think of Nintendo, I get the impression that they usually don't allow much media exposure to the process of how games get made.
[…]
Instructor: Speaking of which, what role do you play in development?
[…]
Instructor: So why did you begin calling yourself a producer?
Miyamoto: Once we finished Mario and Zelda, the next thing I wanted to do was sequels. I thought Zelda could turn into a new and different game if the game system was more fun and we could switch between maps and things, so... I had people under me do Mario 3 and The Adventure of Link, so I figured, hey, I'm a producer now. There's also one more reason. To tell the truth, in Nintendo there aren't any official positions called "director" or "producer". Instead you have the kacho/bucho (section chief/department chief) system. The thing is, though, people overseas don't get that system. So when I started dealing with overseas folks, I wanted to sell myself to them, so I just wrote "producer" on my business card. With that title, people from overseas could recognize what I do, and it worked all right. Later I got yelled at from the head office about assigning myself titles, but... (laughs) Those are the two reasons I started calling myself a producer. These days, a typical game takes about 20 or 30 main people and then another 20 or so support guys to create. People say that it takes three years to complete the software, but really, if you have 30 people and eight months, you can make the software. Zelda, though, takes more like a year. So what do we do with the other two years? Well, first there're five of us who build the basic concept and project plan. I, along with an employee who serves as the director, get involved at this point, and for the next half year this plan gets solidified... then another half year, and so on, until the full design behind the project is decided upon. After that, eight months and that's it. I talk to the director during conferences and such, but when I ask "Is this fun?", I don't like people who say "Yes! It's fun!" I prefer guys who look all troubled and say "Mmmm, something's missing..." Even if the director's concerned, though, sometimes the people around him still say "It's fun" when I say "Well?" to them. It's tough, but with a talented director, I can afford to slack off on the project...

Additional excerpts from the above lecture, from 2003:
http://web.archive.org/web/20030811223536/http://www.video-fenky.com/features/miyamoto.html
Miyamoto: ...At that time [1977-1981], one person could take care of every part of the game and he was called a designer. There weren't any "designers" like there are today, so I had to do all the graphic-design and game-direction work by myself… Overall it took six or seven people to make the Donkey Kong game and hardware, and there were about six people on the Famicom too, I think. Once we all got a little bolder and hired on apprentice-type people, around the time of Super Mario Bros., I could just bring out the initial design and leave the rest to the apprentices. That ended up being the best way of all to make games. So by that time I was a director. After the Famicom's launch, the Disk System was completed in 1985, and I started work on Mario and Zelda sequels at the same time. I was the director on both projects and I really thought I was going to die… Right now, I stick really close by four or five Nintendo titles a year. At the 10-title mark, it's down to the level where I help out in the final stages or when the project's getting derailed here and there, or I yell at them if nothing's going anywhere. I don't know if I should say this... if I'm working as a supervisor, then I'm really not involved much at all. (laughs) With an overseas team like Retro Studios with Metroid Prime, we do a phone conference once a month and exchange employees once every two or three months...

And from a June 1997 interview with IGN:
http://www.ign.com/articles/1997/06/19/e3-through-the-eyes-of-miyamoto-pt-2
IGN: How much of your job is now hands-on, and how are you involved in current games?
Miyamoto: It's very hard for me to say now. Three years ago I was director and producer of Super Mario 64. Then I only worked on Mario. Now I'm a producer on almost every game except Zelda 64. On Zelda 64 I'm half director and half producer.

And with respect to Mario 64, specifically:
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Iwata-As...the-Night/4-Gestures-in-the-Night-222196.html
Koizumi: Yes. I'd have to say the most impressionable experience I had with Miyamoto-san was when we started working on the Mario 64 prototype. He just came out one day and said, "I'm going to direct this one." I was really shocked when he said that. I mean, Miyamoto-san as director -
Iwata: He hadn't directed anything for a long time.
Koizumi: He seemed to be really taken by the freshness of a 3D world, enough to take on the job himself…

The original videos without logos is in the OP of this thread. Available in the DigitalChumps preview.

That particular youtuber just reposts other peoples content.

Thats....a thing you can do. Repost videos and make them worse by adding a huge ass logo :|

The music at the end of this video... and just the whole scene that is set.

I can't. I just can't fam (fairly spoilery vid) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwP4WLoJ4bQ

Wowwwww. Tears. Funny enough this is the most "Animal Crossing" song I've heard, but also the most beautiful and fitting.

I know she's done work on Zelda before, but I definitely see choosing Manaka Kataoka as a bit of a risk, but definitely one that has paid off. So excited for this game and the beautiful music.

Why doesn't he take more damage after the first barrel ? Invicibility after damage taken ??

You forgot poor barrel placement.

Yeah I agree, level design doesn't matter, fuck these negative people

She's the best in the business at making calm, soothing background music that doesn't get annoying.

Just really pleasant, 'natural-sounding' music.

A brilliant pick for a nature/outdoors-oriented Zelda game.

One question. I heard from some buddies of mine that the world is going to be split up into "sections" rather than be one fully fledged open world.

As in, you leave an area, there's a loading screen, and the next big area shows up. I'm pretty sure that this isn't the case but can someone tell me otherwise?

Based on the previews:

When you fast travel through a shrine, there's a loading time. When you enter a shrine, there's a loading time.

The overworld is one piece.

What type of rewards do we get for doing the korok seeds? Just curious if we have to do all 900 of them before seeing any benefit of them or if you're rewarded regularly for doing them. Of course, if they're just fun to do on their own, that's cool too.
I heard that the rewards are something you are going to want to get

Probably the game doesn't let you be 'comboed' to death. So the same type of wake-up invincibility that every Zelda game has after being hit, it just doesn't stop the physics engine from ragdolling you around for a while.

zelda breath of the wild absolutely cannot be a 10/10 here is a list of reasons why

- zelda is overrated
- when was the last good zelda? ocarina of time
- kiddy cartoon graphics no realistic
- switch is wii u power so cant render good graphics
- ugly open world flat and bland
- horizon looks better
- not powered by sony technology
- nintendo paid the press as usual
- waggle probably
- dlc season pass means game isnt even finish!!!!!!!!!

You forgot:

-it won't appeal to kids and teens

Just accidentally clicked on the spoiler thread. Saw one thing I didn't want to see but thankfully it wasn't too bad. Not gonna make that mistake again.

The one and only thing so far that i am not incredibly fond of is the music in the footage so far. I was hoping for some beautiful music while exploring the land, you know the kind of relaxing music from a Elder Scrolls but then of course in Zelda style. Not digging these rather odd piano....things i hear in the videos. Maybe i just haven't seen enough videos yet but i keep hoping there will be some lovely music. The trailers had fantastic music.

Yeah she's incredible. I hope she's on board again whenever they make the next Animal Crossing.

I keep going from 'I can buy the wii u version' to 'I should buy a switch' and back every hour or so. It would be a easy choice if it wasnt for the insane price of the switch in my country

Erm... Both of these videos are the same. Did BestVideoMoments steal from Nintenderos?

For every unique video uploaded by a previewer there's about 50 spammy video thieves who reupload with a bunch of watermarks, this is often done to catch views+subs typical parasitic youtube behaviour.

If your're planning on getting a Switch anyway, go for that especially if you like Splatoon so you've got the test fires to look forward to as well

If it was $300 I would do it but its selling for $500 here. And best case scenario it only goes to $400 by the end of the year. Sigh.

On the plus side, they are actually selling switch units right now, no zelda tho so no point of buying it yet until zelda arrives.

Switch dude, switch. Zelda, Mario Kart and Splatoon 2 on a portable all within a couple of months.

FWIW, there are sections where music is more dominant, as mentioned in:
http://digitalchumps.com/legend-zelda-breath-wild-spoiler-free-preview/

In the review in EDGE, they even focused on the seamless audio design and how it worked in a special section.

Just watched the Easy Allies preview. They mentioned that the Switch version has framerate issues. Any other previewer mentioned this problem? Hope they can fix it with a patch.

Yes, it has some framerate issues. Yes, Nintendo could probably release a performance patch if they feel the need to. Though you aren't going to come across many open world games that don't have some performance problems. Even Nintendo won't be exempt from this.

From what I read in other previews it's sporadic and rare but I may be wrong.

Just seen a video regarding the attempts of mounting non-equine ungulates, may be a bit spoilery for this thread and looks like they show part of the main quest a little.

Won't post link because of the thumbnail, Swimmingbird941 is the channel.

Tfw you have already seen six of these one week before release.

Yeah I know. It is not a big issue for me as long as it is not gamebreaking or anything.I survived Blight Town in DS on x360 without a lot of frustration :p I think they made it sound worse during the preview than it is. Hyped beyond believe for this game!

When I come back from my trip in Asia the 28th of April the first thing I do is buy a Switch and play this game until I have to go to work again 3 days later :)
