LTTP: Uncharted 4 is a mediocre game that is really pretty.

Got done playing UC4 not long ago and I have to say, I am througly unimpressed. Now let me preface this by saying that I love Naughty Dog and have loved every series/game they've made since Crash Bandicoot, so I say this with great sadness when it comes to the Uncharted series.

I took a break from the series after being disappointed with the first UC, and after all the hype about every entry after that I decided to finally play the fourth one. Other than the somewhat impressive set pieces and great graphics, nothing was impressive or even lived up to the pedigree of ND. The story didn't know if it wanted to be rumpus or reflective, and never did I feel that I was getting a better grasp of the gameplay. The entire game just felt stale. The stealth wasn't rewarding, the climbing offered no challenge (Hell, give me a stamina meter at least), and the gunplay was... meh.

Honestly, I'm still baffled as to how ND never was able to capture the same gaming bliss that they have had with CB, Jak and TLOU.

it had a lot of problems but I wouldnt say it was mediocre. In hindsight it's heavier emphasis on story definitely cost a lot of what I thought made uncharted 2 amazing.I felt like ND was trying to bring the last of us to uncharted which was kind of odd because they're two very distinct games that are trying to do different things at the end of the day.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Couldnt agree more with the title but keep in mind it was voted GotY 2016 here. Most people loved it.

I liked the gameplay. Having the option to go sneaky in most of the levels as well as having new gameplay elements like cruising through Africa definitely set 4 apart from his prequels.

Lol I thought it was amazing. Do you often find yourself not liking things that millions of other people really enjoy?

This is very ironic.

How so? It did a much better balance between story and gameplay. The stealth felt more seamless in that game than it did in Uncharted. The combat had weight to it that UC fails to have, and the story overall as dark but the lighter moments never felt out of place.

I feel like I spent 50% of that game climbing mountains. That's probably not true, but when I look back on the game, that's what comes to mind first.

TLoU might be one of the more underrated games in terms of gameplay. The weight of the weapons, movement of the characters, variety of the enemies, etc. were really well done.

I hold the unpopular opinion that the gameplay of TLoU far outclasses its story.

It's above mediocre/above average, but yeah the design itself wasn't the highest quality. The pacing was a mess and the "open" sections were just pointless empty open areas. It also suffered from lack of set pieces (I know this was a design choice, but it was too extreme. Uncharted is known for death-defying set pieces. Having 2-3 in the longest Uncharted adventure ever is simply not enough) and the climbing was still pretty shallow. The best part was gun combat, which was ironically too infrequent.

The story was wonderful, though. Although, they should have done more with the drug lord prisoner who was said to "free" Sam. He would have made a cool villain. I also expected more of a rat race to the treasure between these parties than what it ended up being. The final area was also a bit of a let down. We could have had a way more crazy segment on Avery's ship.

What was meh about the gunplay? I agree with the climbing part. There was no challenge in it.

It felt more like a chore. Maybe it was me, but I could tell that the developers wanted the players to jump around the stages to gain advantages over the enemies but it just felt sloppy. I just ended up finding a corner and blasting fools.

It's not unpopular opinion. The gameplay in both tlou and uc4 is topnotch. Best in genre

I wouldn't call it mediocre but it's definitely overrated. They just got the paying and game play integration all wrong. TLOU was a vastly superior game, as was UC2.

This has been the same for me for the entire series. I played 2 and a half of the games. Cant stomach more. I tried just for the spectacle alone. Im shocked that this is only being realised now tbh. The games were always so boring and generic in the gameplay department.

I havent played 4 to be fair, but i cant imagine it being much different to the previous 3.

Do we really need an LTTP of Uncharted 4 every month now -_-
There's a community thread you know, I'm pretty sure you can post your concerns and opinions about the game there.

You know, I'd say that you're simply wrong, but I guess everyone is entitled to his own opinion. For me, Uncharted 4 is the best game in the serie, by far, and well-worthy of the many GOTY awards, the story is great, the action is fantastic, stealth added an extra layer to the already great gameplay, more exploration than before, and gone are the bullet sponge enemies just rushing like ants ready to die. Awesome game! 10/10

Sorry bout that, I haven't posted in Gaming for a while and didn't think to see if there was still an active community on the game. I forget that it has multiplayer.

I like the Uncharted games a lot and Uncharted 4 ranked on my top 10 last year, but I do agree it ended up feeling a lot less special to me in the gameplay department than the way I felt about 2 and 3. I don't even believe it has anything to do with the gameplay being bad, it just seems to have fallen a bit stale for me over the years, and to me it didn't feel like Uncharted 4 really did much to expand on it significantly. I did come away feeling that the visual presentation, writing, and acting were all better than ever from the studio and cast, though... And ultimately, while it wasn't a high placer for me personally within that top 10 due to how often I actually did grow bored actually playing the game (I enjoyed the cutscenes more), I do still feel that it deserves the credit it got.

You saying the gunplay was meh just makes me wanna ignore the rest of the post. It was def the best in the series and some of the best third person shooter combat seen this gen. Maybe it's just me comparing to the mediocre combat of the first three. But they really stepped up.

Exactly, I don't see how people think TLoU is a walking sim or an interactive movie. It is still very much a game and a very good one at that. Stealth fells nice and seamless, weapons were fun to use and upgrade, and they gave you enough weapons to have a variety of tactics to kill enemies.

Just wish there was more combat and less climbing, was never one of those who cared about how many people Nate killed as I knew it was a necessity for the games to not bore you at times or get too mindless and the only other thing I didn't like was the
twist, I think having you have to team up with Rafe and Nadine after Alcazar comes in a kicks all your asses wouldn've been better than the completely predictable one we got.
Loved pretty much everything else though and especially the little combat we do get, so many more way to run and gun and just take out a level without slowing down much.

Plenty of people don't like multiple games that millions of people enjoyed, I'm sure most posters could offer a shortlist in a similar vein, despite whole threads of 'I hate (insert your favourite most popular game)' being a bit pointless. Games being popular also means they get tried by people that don't normally play that genre and are less forgiving of tired genre conventions or weren't part of the hype train, in addition to more people that then discover something new they love, which is a fair trade-off for the expanded audience.

As far as GOTY winners go GTAIV and Dragon Age Inquisition don't seem to be standing the test of time (albeit the latter was due to a very weak transition year).

Personally I've always found Uncharted to be top notch presentation, story and characters, over pointlessly weak and signposted climbing around pretty environments to find yet another repetitive gunfight in an arena topped with crap boss fights. I don't think they are mediocre but I do find the gameplay itself a bit of a relic from last gen. They are pretty much made to be GOTY winners though.

I played four or five chapters of it and it kind of got boring. Amazing graphics and solid gameplay but I just didn't find the characters or the story interesting at all. I'll try and continue it some day though.

I can't disagree OP. Uncharted 4 wasn't impressive to me at all.(impressive graphics aside)

The pacing was awful, the lack of humor and setpieces was disappointing and the story was anything but captivating.(incredibly surprising since you'd think that's the one area ND would nail post-TLoU)

Hey no problem. As a huge Uncharted fan, I turn a blind eye to some of the issues the game has. I do agree that some of them can be seen as bad game design to others like the many climbing sections or the pacing in the 3rd act.

That's really the Uncharted series in a nutshell.

They're not bad games at all, but they're average shooters hidden beneath amazing visuals, set pieces, and a well done story. It's a shame, because I felt like TLoU made significant improvements in the gameplay department compared to Uncharted.

Also, it should be a crime to call the climbing and jumping in Uncharted "platforming". Seriously, why do people gloss over how terrible it is?

This was my first Uncharted rodeo with the fourth game. I found the shooting boring, and climbing a little too automated. I wish the large scaled areas you traversed actually had been more free roaming, the whole game felt like a walk from A to B.

The scenery was breathtaking and the graphics look fantastic though.

They really screwed the pacing on this one. Huge sessions of complete nothing. One of the most boring AAA action games I've ever played because of it.

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
I mean, isn't this just Uncharted's shtick? It's never had anything above average gameplay (usually skirting somewhere below), but has always been a top notch piece of visual entertainment.

It is indeed real pretty game.Platforming is utter shit and boring so does stealth.

Multiplayer is fun though but it doesnt deserve 10/10 goty omg awards

TLoU's MP was sublime because of its gameplay, so I think you're dead on.

Absolutely agree, never really cared for Uncharted anyway though so my opinion may be moot. I much preferred rise of the tomb raider.

At this point all I can say is I wanted Amy Hennig's Uncharted 4 not Neil Druckmann's Uncharted 3. Gameplay was perfection though. Can't really criticize anything aside from the balancing issues in crushing.

No such thing as a mediocre Uncharted game, least not on the consoles.

Those who think the combat is boring must be playing it like the average cover shooter rather than styling all over the place with the options the playgrounds give you.
