Can you please explain what FreeBSD is and why this is a big deal?

Wikipedia is your friend:

FreeBSD is a free and open source Unix-like operating system descended from Research Unix via the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD)

Due to its permissive licensing terms, much of FreeBSD's code base has become an integral part of other operating systems, such as Juniper JUNOS, Apple's macOS, and the operating systems running on Sony's PlayStation 3[4] and PlayStation 4.[5]

Not a big surprise, i guess the Xbox One would run some kind of Linux too if it wasn't Microsoft that is behind it ^^

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Before people jump to conclusions.... This doesn't mean anything - console having a Unix based OS is more or less expected nowadays unless you are MS.

People kept thinking it was Android because of the interface lol.

I guess this is just interesting because of the android thing, yeah? Or is it a Nintendo going modern thing?

edit: oh, I guess it's a hacking thing.

Lots of OS are based on FreeBSD because it is stable unix and free and good open source permissions for doing whatever you want with it.

Well there was also that old Nikkei report that said it was Android

Still doesn't explain why this is a big deal.

Linux? So what?

UNIX, not Linux

It's not a big deal though. Just a logical choice really, there are not so many good options available at the moment.

why it's good:
– open
– BSD-license
– a very small footprint
– stable

Ugh, stop calling it Linux, people. They're not related, they're just both based on Unix.

As an open-source advocate, Linux user and BSD dabbler, I find this interesting. I'm glad the Switch is not running Android.

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

Or until now, Nintendo.

Finally abandoning the idea of making their own kernel, good.

Being BSD based should make developing apps like Netflix easier too, so all good.

Nvidia of course fully support BSD with their drivers. Hey I was wrong it wasn't Android based after all but Nintendo Finally going *nix is great to see.

It's a massive improvement over the Wii U OS which was, and still is, one of the worst OSs anyone could devise.

just because something runs Unix-based stuff like FreeBSD doesn't make it susceptible to hackers any more or less than devices on other operating systems.

Yeah I'm not sure how people are making the logical leap that this means it's susceptible now.

Guys. Linux != BSD. Both are different systems.

Isn't it kinda like 99% compatible to Linux software? That was the impression I was getting when dicking around with freebsd. I'm pretty sure the new users guide said that. (Though I'm not 100% fyi)

To be fair Android gets shoved into tons of random things; refrigerators, picture frames, cameras, etc. so putting it into what amounts to a glorified gaming tablet doesn't seem so farfetched. All the speculators should've known Nintendo was going to Nintendo and go for something more custom rather than off the shelf though.

Its gonna be ineveitable well see it hacked soon then.

PS3 runs FreeBSD and wasn't hacked until the slim revision which was 3 years later. PS4 also runs FreeBSD and took a little over 2 years. In both cases things were severely limited to older firmware.

Sure as hell will take longer than if it was running android because lol android security.
