Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Nothing wrong in asking for photographic examples for claims people are making, especially ones as serious as this. We're 4 days into it's launch, there should be examples everywhere by now. Again, I don't doubt there's issues with the system, but the lack of examples make it hard to determine just what could be causing it.

This kinda reminds me of the GCW Zero screen issue. That thing would scratch if you breathed on it... but then it turned out that there was a nearly invisible piece of film over the screen that you needed to peel off. The film was being scratched, not the screen.
Not saying that's the case here, but....that'd be nice.

There's scratches and then bent docks. If you have a bent dock you'd want to know if that's what caused the scratches/markings, right? This is a thread investigating whether the dock can scratch the screen.
That was a nightmare.
So my tape back fired and stuck to the switch screen itself because the glass slid....
I had to clean it forever....
And then when I managed to do the system, it fell again and I got mad and just eyeballed it.
I eyeballed it pretty well. But I had one big air bubble in the middle.
I had to use a cardboard thing to force it out. Which resulted in micro scratches on the (I HOPE) screen protector. HAHAHAHA
They're not really visible so I'm just a maniac. This is uncomparable to the Switch scratches I've seen. And if anything I guess I can always buy a new screen protector when they're not out of stock.
Nobody would notice if I didn't mention it. It's not visible when screen is lit and only visible at an angle with pure light on it.

I was talking about the screen protector application.
When I tried to remove the tape that came with it, mine ended up less powerful and since I didn't want to put fingerprints on it I had to eye ball it before dust settled back on the switch.
It was hell, felt like I was Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.
And Since I had used my kitchen to create steam, i was sweating.

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed to see and have been asking for! The front of the dock shouldn't be touching the screen at all. Still gotta wonder how they all seem to be on the sides though.

I'm actually surprised so many people have space under/around their TVs to keep the dock upright. When I get mine I'll most certainly be keeping it horizontal with screen side up, might help with scratches on the front at least.

The rails on the dock are on the sides/bezel. They are made of a material that can easily scratch the screen/bezel.
Even if most people aren't having issues, that alone is a serious design flaw. It's early days yet, and with such an easily scratched screen I imagine the group of people with scratches from the dock and otherwise is gonna grow pretty quickly.
If Nintendo expected everyone to always dock their consoles without ever touching the guide rails on the dock that they designed so people could more easily guide their consoles into the dock by touching the guide rails, they have whatever the guy from Split has.

My dock doesn't look bent, but putting the unit in there it wiggles like crazy, hard to just come straight down. Screen protector shipped and will hopefully be here Friday. I will also be going to pick up some foam pads to stick in the dock so the process of docking it is smoother.
Quite possibly, especially with kids who don't give a crap and just throw it in there without thinking about it. I've been careful with mine, and (knock on wood) no scratches yet. I will probably invest in a screen protector though as a bit of preventative maintenance.

I think someone in this thread report that those white looking fine scratches can actually be cleaned off with some of those windex wipes and harder rubbing than usual. Curious to see if that is true or not for all users that posted those pictures. This thread is a roller coaster that's for sure. I'm just not sure what the best course of action to take is (besides getting a screen protector) and I'm not sure there IS a best course of action yet.

I think that the design is actually intentional to sacrifice the bezel, so that the lit part of the screen doesn't contact the rails or the dock. I.e. Scratch the bezel to help avoid scratches on the screen.

So they intentionally designed the dock to damage the console instead of just designing the dock in a way that makes sense? This would be the first consumer electronics device I'd ever heard of that would be intentionally designed in that fashion.
These justifications are too much. Honestly if this were true it would prove Nintendo to be malicious instead of incompetent.

I've used the one that comes with the Pro controller and also ordered a "Cable Matters" branded one from Amazon. Both work fine. I used the Cable Matters one and charged off a Power Bank from ~50% to 100% without issue.
Isn't that cable male to male?
I want male to female so I don't have to place the switch in the dock and can just connect a cable between the dock and switch.

My Orzly tempered glass protectors shipped today from Amazon as well. No way I'm risking putting my console in the dock until they arrive. Shitty thing is the expected delivery date is the 14th. Didn't know there was a postage system that slow in the UK.
That isnt what the user is asking for. The cable that comes with the pro controller is a type c to type a cable.

The thing is to me, is none of those scratches look like they come from the dock at all. Especially the ones where it shoots of in other directions.

The dock seems like a really bad design. It should have some type of subtle rail or track to guide the Switch right on to the USB-C port. At least the dock doesn't have anything valuable in it.

You are correct that some people have been able to buff the markings off the screen. I did my best to exclude those examples, although I still think that's relevant since in most cases it's specifically marking the bezel.
Using a screen protector seems to be the safest and most effective way to mitigate any damage as long as the system doesn't heat in the dock and loosen the adhesive. Secondly, making sure the dock is straight seems a harmless try at helping things. These are what most people should be doing.
The padding, extension cables, and dock chopping are more unknowns at this point. I adore this system as a handheld and I'd be sad if the screen had any permanent marks. I've decided on a tempered glass protector and a USB C extension cable. I'm willing to give it a try like samus is and see if it affects my battery or system. Most people should get a screen protector and wait for extensive professional reviews on the situation.

I have one scratch because of people dismissing the issue. I tried to be open minded and use the dock without the microfiber clothe I usually put between the dock and the screen, to see if I'm too much anal or paranoid, and I got a scratch on the first try. I was being careful too.
It's hard to take a picture of the scratch and I don't mind because it's on the bezel, but people should be aware of this issue.
It's not a conspiracy, we aren't lying, we don't own stocks in protective screen companies, we just want to warn others to be careful and to not fall victim to the same issue.
We are looking for solutions and good answers. This thread is very constructive.
The Switch is bound to be my favorite console for at least the next three years, you bet I want to take good care of it.

Heard about this. Solution incoming?
I put two SNES cartridges in the dock last night, side by side with the thin part of the cartridge separating the rails. This kept the dock opened just a tad wider than straight overnight.
This morning I took the cartridges out and, as expected, the plastic returned inward just slightly, but now there actually is a little wiggle room. This makes it possible to dock the Switch without the screen coming in contact with the rails provided I'm careful. I will check tonight to see if the dock warped back. If not, this will tide me over until my screen protector arrives.
Before I did this, the dock rails pinched the tablet when attempting to dock it.

All they needed to do was add a rubber or silicone coating to the dock's interior contact points and this would have been a non-issue. This is some cheap as shit handling of the situation.

I noticed when I tried to power off the Switch using the physical button while in the dock it made the entire system wobble back and forth since there's nothing actually clipping it down into the unit. I'm thinking that this could be causing some of the scratching issues, especially the ones where you can see that the scratches are all localized in one area near the center of the bezel.

If a certain percentage of them are bent when they were made or they bend over time a silicone coating won't matter.
Might be better to just redesign with an open design.

I guess the one saving grace to this whole thing is, if they DO redesign the dock, at least it's not something that's tied to the individual console, and *should* be relatively cheap to produce.

I can't see them redesigning it so soon. The dock is already engrained in a lot of advertisement and promotional material. If anything they'll just give a bandaid solution. Or stealthily widen the slot or something similarly inconspicuous.

I feel bad for you guys that have dock problems. I can't get my dock to even smudge my screen. As a primary PS4 gamer I love my switch for playing upstairs or here and there when I get the time.

Plastic sliding against plastic on a routine basis can easily cause scratches. The contact points need to be felt or some other soft material. Incredibly cheap design by Nintendo, especially when you consider how much Nintendo is charging for the dock. Absolute ripoff.
I thought about trying this but instead of leaving it overnight maybe just heating it a tad with a hair dryer. I'm just worried I'm going to damage the thing more.
