Seems like this show just came in late and hot. They dragged ass on developing it and had to rush through production with too little time for good writing or choreography while settling for a lackluster showrunner.

I have no idea why Inhumans was rushed though. Seems like that could have waited a year. I don't think Marvel TV has to settle for a guy like Scott Buck when the brand is so strong.

You know as a black guy that honestly has no dog in the fight here I got to say that this is a very weird situation. Either you change Danny and make him asian and risk being called racist because he is a Asian guy doing martial arts. Or stick with the source material and keep him white. Well clearly keeping him white wasn't the right answer but idk what you would do in this situation. They kinda wrote themselves into a damned if you do. Damned if you don't situation.

Maybe the best answer was to make a good show lol. I'll watch it either way because marvel has me by the balls but I worry for my sanity watching this one.

They could have kept him white while not writing him as a white savior. That's what the book did - it subverted the mighty whitey bullshit by making the hero a guy whose saving grace was that he'd always get up and keep fighting even though he constantly got his ass kicked by superior fighters.

Inhumans has been a priority for Ike Perlmutter for a long time, and once Feige was able to get him pushed out of the film side -- and effectively kill the Inhumans movie -- my guess is that Ike turned the screws on Loeb to get an Inhumans tv series up and running quickly.

Where was it cited that Perlmutter specifically was pushing for Inhumans this hard?

I assumed it was moved to TV because of the logistical challenge of making room for them in the Infinity War movies.

The rumor about Perlmutter and Inhumans has floated around Birth Movies Death and Bleeding Cool for a couple years. It could be bullshit of course, but nothing has ever come out to really contradict it. One of the last stories to come out of that rumor was that the Inhumans movie was cancelled as of 2015, and sure enough the following year the movie was taken off Marvel's schedule (it was slated for July 2019 so it wouldn't have affected Infinity War anyway) and a tv show was announced instead.

Inhumans was originally November 2018, between the two Infinity War movies. This was before Spider-Man and Ant-Man got slotted in and stuff got shifted around.

That's why I assumed Marvel might have later thought it was just too many characters for the end of Phase 3.

Saw the Coleen fight clips and just...... I am desperately looking for a reason to watch this.

This is not the stylized series I thought I was getting. Were my expectations too high?

So here where i stand.

I really don't care about the Mighty Whitey stuff. When i first heard about this whole Marvel Netflix deal and heard they were making an Iron Fist show, i thought "fuck yeah, more kung fu fight scenes".
I mean thats all i asked. I'm a martial arts movie guy. Yes, story & plot those are good and important, but if told me "Hey SomeRandomAnon. Theres this movie with terrible story, acting and characters, but sweet jesus, those fight scenes" i would go to the cinema in a heartbeat. Twice.
So i watched Daredevil. It was pretty great. You had some Scott Adkins-esque fight scene with the modern stunt style of choreographies with plenty of tumbling and butterfly kicks. When the Ninjas fought there were even some hints of more traditional stuff. And of course there was that corridor fight scene which was pretty entertaining.
So Jessica Jones and Luke Cage failed on me on that point, but then again i wasn't looking for it. Their powers simply weren't made for low budget fight scenes. Cage action scenes actually got pretty boring after a while because it was the same thing multiple times. Ended dropping Cage. Psych Man carried me through the end of Jessica Jones.
Daredevil 2 was also pretty alright. Like always first half of the season was better, but while The Hand are not interesting as villains everytime they appear, at least they give me a conduit for a decent fight scene.

And thats all i asked about Iron Fist really. A conduit for a decent fight scene. I hammered through Marco Polo and Into the Badlands because there were some decent fight scenes hidden in those series.

I don't get it.
Why does this show exists.
How the fuck do you go to make a series about magical kung fu guy and you fuck the Kung Fu part?
I watched the Coileen fight scene, with all due respect, why the fuck are you doing that style of editing? Whats up with those choreographies? Are you trying to mimic The Raid? The Bourne Movies?
Don't mimic that! Mimic the fucking Shaw Brothers! Give me Wide shot. Steady Cam. Shapes, Forms, weapons, styles, silly names. Fuck what is probably one of the most iconic Iron Fist gives me all that and some pulpy detective flavour sprinkled in it

A follower of his cut his face off to lead the cult that started following Jerome(not-Joker)
basically this from New 52.

Edit:too late

I thought that Jerome guy was supposed to be Joker, is that not the case?

Never seen the show, by the way. I've just heard that he was Joker.

I loved this scene so much. it gave me life.

fucking penguin hired a bunch of goons to walk in limps (actually knowing him he prolly broke their legs) as a distraction. so absurd and hilarious.
Yup, I seriously immediately rewatched it 4 or 5 times.
Penguin's theme blasting as it happens makes it even better.

Originally he was 1 potential Joker that the series would introduce,
He was the second after a terrible comedian earlier in S1.

He was received okay so they brought him back as a 1off inspiration for Jokers early in S2,
He was so well received for that arc they used the premise of S2 to use him once again in S3 ,this time exactly Joker without the costume, skin and green hair.

Am I taking crazy pills here? Gotham is about as good as Dexter's Season 8. At least stan The Flash and Supergirl if you wanna go down the DC tv road.

I found the championing of an Asian American Iron Fist weird because I always thought Asian Americans hated the fact a lot of the roles for Asians were nerd and Kung fu geek. Like I didn't get it.

Unfortunately this is already the plot for Daredevil season 1.

Is Danny Rand a nerd or kung fu geek? It's possible to make an Asian American Danny a non-stereotypical character.

The whole lose-lose thing annoys me, cuz their solution is almost always going with a white actor. And this one turned out to be badly cast anyway. lol

When people say lose-lose, they usually mean "who cares why try to actually write a good story, stop complaining, if there isn't a perfect solution then we shouldn't do anything different."

Okay I legit just got dumb pissed off thinking about what this could have been. We haven't seen the show, but if it had the names of the moves Danny was doing with a narrator saying the Fist of the North Star style, and K'un-L'un symbol silhouette in the background, that would have been dope. And has him learning new techniques throughout the series. Oh god why am I doing this to myself?

Don't know about other Asian dudes but I actually like the Asian Kung fu/martial artist trope. It's too badass not to like man.

What if Edgar Wright was the showrunner

All this thread has convinced me of is that Scott Buck is as awful as I remember and that I need to catch up on Gotham.

The trailer for the Return of Jerome was lit.

Leave it to Gotham to give us a better Joker than the movies

holy shit it's the red head friend from malcolm in the middle

I remember that face

It wasn't a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. You act as if the secondary and lesser Asian characters still aren't being stereotyped as martial artists. It's like what an Asian actor who was cast as one of the villains in Iron Fist but was campaigning to play Danny Rand said that was something to the effect of, "If you're going to stereotype me at least let us be the lead and heroes in these stories, who get's the romantic interest, and who the audience empathizes with and experinces their charcther development and journey."

I have never met an asian person who actually would hate seeing another asian person kick more ass on the screen. Like I only hear about that kind of talk within mostly liberal bubbles like Gaf.

I personally grew up watching a bunch of bootleg kung fu flicks and wuxia dramas. As a kid I loved renting Jackie Chan and Jet Li's film just because I got to see awesome asian actors kick ass and great choreography, something that is in spades in the East compared to Hollywood. Those kind of actors sadly coming to the end, with some hope in people like Iko Uwais and maybe Tony Jaa if he didn't have a mental breakdown. So seeing another asian guy get a shot and be an action star always sounded great to me.

Don't know about other Asian dudes but I actually like the Asian Kung fu/martial artist trope. It's too badass not to like man.

High Five. I'll be blunt, even if someone were white as wonderbread, they have to be pretty wack not to like something like the last fight scene in Drunken Master 2.

Yeah, an Asian Danny Rand doing kung fu would be great. As long as the character is treated with respect and made to be more than just being good at kung fu and kicking ass. Such a missed opportunity from Marvel...

Is it though? The show is getting shat on by every critic for being complete crap. If Danny was Asian, we'd have the first Asian lead in Marvel....stuck in a piece of shit show from Scott Buck. At least that ain't the case.

I'd be down for an Asian Namor, from a good director, on the big screen.

Yep, thats true. Scott Buck would have probably fucked it up anyway.

It's weird, they got the same fight choreographer that did Marco Polo, I don't understand why they didn't just go with a similar style to the fights in that show. They looked great and would've suited perfectly.

The only answer I can come up with for Iron Fist looking so bad is how rushed it must've been. Tight shooting schedule with no time for the actors to do much training, so just try to make it all work in editing.

That Colleen fight they released was embarrassing, and you've gotta figure that's the good stuff if it's what they're showing off ahead of time.

With the soundtrack scored by the RZA.

You know what they should've done. They should've just copied the mortal kombat movie. Lui kang as Shang chi as the main character plus Johnny Cage as sidekick bro iron fist. I tell you man it would've worked.

They are. Arrow S5 shits on every Marvel show after DD S1. Flash S1 is better than every Marvel show. Current Legends of Tomorrow is more fun than any of the Marvel shows have ever been.

I mean people are entitled to their opinions but I couldn't disagree more. Not that I hated Flash season 1 but the guy that plays flash is not a good actor.
The show has some great supporting characters and story but is not even close to as good as daredevil.
