The music lmaooooo.

Just browsed the previous pages. Having played the trial for a few minutes, I can confirm that these are not rare occurrences. Damn, I wonder what happened during development. These animations are terrible. The graphics are so subpar too. The reviews on Monday are going to be very telling. I already preordered digitally on PS4 tho so I guess I'm stuck on this ride. :D
I thought you could cancel a digital preorder on PSN?

For those interested, A Youtuber named xletalis did a comparison yesterday contrasting ME1 to Andromeda.

They certainly most likely did, but something must have gone wrong during development

This illustrates perfectly why andromeda is sometimes so jarring. If you don't use face capture technology you have to use head movements or other ways to convey emotion. See how they used subtle nodding and eye movements to make Ashley look convincing.

This is just bad animation, or a lack of time/budget. Probably a combination.

I think this is my favourite part so far. I could forgive almost everything else if the writing was good, but this dialogue is so bad I'm amazed it was signed off by the writer, editor, director, voice director and actor.

Reminds me of "I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain" from Vanilla Destiny.

Time - 5 years since ME 3
Budget - as a triple A title, surely there's a fair chunk of cash sunk into it

I was going to play this as my first big Mass Effect game. As it stands, I think I'll stick to Mass Effect 1 for now in my Steam backlog. Feel a bit bad for this new development team now..

I think Witcher 3's facial animations still have it beat but they're certainly comparable. Unlike Andromeda. Sheesh.

The Witcher 3 has facial animations that are clearly still "video game", but they are still quite expressive. Horizon does this weird thing where it's half "video game" and half "realistic", so it looks ridiculous more often than not. It does a great job with everything from the bottom of the nose up. Mouths though? Mostly awful.

I think I'd prefer the models used in 2007. They got the eyes right. I just don't understand how they thought the faces and animations were good enough.

They're player-made, so I do think the model on the left is just a fugly designed player character while the one on the right looks normal, better makeup, etc.

But still, yeah... The lighting and head animation is awful.

Well I'm not buying it except in a GOTY (lol) type edition that has fixed it.

A patch not enough because it would need be one of those 'download the entire game but fixed' type patches, making the disc worthless.

I think the one on the left is npc, not player made. The player is talking with her.

See, I feel like this one works if it's deliberately awkward. Like, you cringe and go, "Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh that's not gonna work."

One thing that's stuck out to me though since a friend pointed out the... peculiarities of the game's appearance is how lighting interacts with materials, often in ways that seem strange. Like in the above gif, there's an incredibly heavy contrast on the shadowed parts of her face, yet both her shoulders are practically aglow. Her skin also seems shiny and reflective in some parts but dull as clay in others. It's a weird mixed bag that doesn't come together well.

Is it meant to be an art style or surreal aesthetic? I really feel like I'm watching 80's claymation.

Motion/facial capture was a mistake.

I don't see how a lower budget game like Nier Automata can have such beautiful animations but this AAA game can look so bad.

Neither of them are player characters.

One question I have, that doesn't only apply to Andromeda... why no developer seems to even try to reach LA Noir facial animations? Like, that game is 6 years old.I guess it must be quite expensive, but doing it at least for some key characters or something...

LA Noire was incredibly expensive (pretty much shut down the studio), that tech just isn't worth the return on investment. Even traditional mocap faces are a very costly and time consuming process, hence the either keyframed or modular facial animation used for most "side" characters.

However I don't think much of that is an excuse here, these are main characters in a AAA game with a focus on story.

No, that's a main NPC character.

Model on the left is a NPC

I think I get why female Ryder looks so silly. She always looks likes she's holding a laugh and trying not to break character like Jimmy Fallon on a SNL sketch.

This is quite the disgrace coming from a big budget game, a huge studio and publisher in a post Witcher 3 world.

I mean this game has been in development for a helluva long time.

My anticipation for the game could not be lower.

Going to wait it out a while before I even think of picking up this game. We've had a god-like Q1 but we could be onto our first stinker.

Ok, I thought it was me, but I in my memory Mass Effect 1 did better than that in the face and dialogue animation department, thak you for the gifs confirming I was right.

This is a fucking travesty to have this 10 years later.
