I hope she's reacting to something. If so, that's a great reaction. If not...

Fuck. This game deserves to get clowned on.

If you're gonna compare that NPC to anybody from Mass Effect 1-3, compare her to Udina. That's fair.

I think Udina is about on par with the bad stuff in this game, maybe even a tad above it, and that character was from 10 years ago.

Yeah, I think Udina is actually above it. The eyes don't look dead like they do in Andromeda. More nuance in facial expressions too, at times.

still looks better and more expressive and believable than Andromeda

Didn't ME3 sell worse than ME2? They could be "abandoning" the series.
I think they better had left it after the ending of ME1. The story was pretty solid and finished. "Humanity has shown it is ready to stand as a defender and protector of the galaxy. You have proved you are worthy to join our ranks and serve besides us on the Citadel Council. Should have ended with that.

If there really was a need for a sequel then they should have straight jumped to the massive battle without the 'Mass Effect 2: The Sidequest' story.

I am now playing DAI and it looks pretty good? What the hell did they do?

What they did in DAI was relegate a large percentage of the conversations to the default camera view, where facial expressions aren't even really visible, which presumably let them devote a lot of time to the relatively few conversations that did take place in cutscene format.

Perhaps that's a better way to handle things, but I found that it made a lot of potentially interesting conversations a total slog.

Also, I get what you are trying to say, but when one of the main attractions for a game like mass effect is story and characters, it kind of stands out when they look janky as all hell and makes sense to criticize that.

That's totally fair. What I find unfair is the fixation on -- and cackling repetition of -- obvious animation bugs or awkward moments. Having now actually played the game, they are not so common as to really damage the experience, at least in the sections that I played. The animation is below average, which is a problem for a conversation-heavy RPG. But it just seems so myopic to relentlessly loop slowed-down clips of awkward or outright buggy 2-second moments if they were somehow totally disqualifying.

Edit - also, the characters don't look great for a AAA game in 2017. Again, this is a problem. But the horse is dead, and lying in shredded bits on the side of the road. Even if this game ends up being awful, I can't wait until the whole thing releases so we can stop talking only about faces and animations.

If that's a reaction to something, then this is actually pretty freaking good animation.

That's actually the interesting thing about this game. They are doing some fairly innovative things it looks like with mocap and facial animation for a rpg this size. But it seems totally selective and buggy and inconsistent. Reactions seem at times totally over the top and at others non existent. And then they also totally screwed up the eyes.

ME1 animation is bad, but it was the first game in a new ip and likely had a much lower budget."

Mass Effect 1's animations were quite impressive for its time. Going from KOTOR and Jade Empire to that Sheploo bar scene in the E3 reveal was really state-of-the-art back then.

Agreed with the rest of your post.

looking at all the videos and streams, and especially GIant Bomb's 2 hour walkthrough all screamed at incredibly rough visual presentation in terms of facial animations. Gamespot is also echoing similar concerns and dislikes for the presentation.

Have these people never seen eyes before or something. It's such a huge fucking shame that this has happened, I can't take these faces seriously, there's no way I could play it in it's current state. 5 years development and in a game that's so much about talking and story they fuck up the one thing that matters so so badly.

They did fine with eyes in Inquisition, which is what makes this so odd.

Wait..... This is retarded.

If you pick a face that's not black for female yet black for male in terms of number, your dad is black no matter what............ It's only based off the male options.

Yikes.

Yikes.

Another hint the entire game was built from male Ryder perspective? Everything about fem-ryder, from default to custom look really awful

I hope the game is still fun but for Mass Effect to have these problems it is just dumb. You spend tons of time talking to people in the game and these clips just really take you out of the experience.

The character presets just look... weird.

Basically the lighting is horrible, the skin reflects too much light, and hair isn't casting a shadow.

In-game (PC), I'm using slight mod of "head 1" with a ponytail - and it mostly looks fine.
