Media Create Sales: Week 10, 2017 (Mar 06 - Mar 12)

Why shouldn't third parties announce their games when the Switch is the new hotness in Japan?
I don't get it.
You already see them quickly pushing games that likely predate Switch and aren't on Switch. The longer they wait with those the more untenable the lack of Switch version will be in the eye of the consumers. As for new announcements for Switch, may I remind you the Switch is publicly available/sold out since barely more than two weeks. There is still plenty of time for such until the big sales seasons.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Unless your game is slated for a release during the launch period and prior to e3 - there is no reason for 3rds to announce or talk about it. Hell even Nintendo isnt talking about games that are very likely hitting in the seconf half of the year like Smash Bros. and Pokemon.

Its all about timing and momentum - all "relevant" announcements are likely being saved for e3 and upcoming Directs. Not for 2 weeks after the launch when they still are trying to satisfy the demand. Common sense.

You are just repeating your lines.

There is no reason why third parties wouldn't announce their titles before and around the launch of a console.

Yup, I don't see the downside to third parties announcing stuff now. Actually showing support whilst the system is sold out might me a good PR move. Especially when it looks like no one else is bothering. Konami definitely benefitted.

The other alternative is a Wii situation where third parties decide to develop for Switch now but by the time they release anything the audience has evaporated.

Yeah...why keep announcement for the biggest gaming event and conferences of the year with massive exposure and Nintendo co-marketing...when you could just sent out a press release in the mid of March for a title that wont be out for months.

Oh right ...so that Gaffers can have more ammo for their listwars - but otherwise there isnt much to gain for 3rds. FY ending in March - this isnt the time for announcements but finish things up and release games. For Example Capcom is selling RE7/VR now for current-gen console...as well as MH XX for 3DS and they have some target to reach for this FY - what would be the point of announcing Switch versions of these titles now when they wont be ready anytime soon but could instead have negative influence on the current sku ?

"Yeah please buy MHXX 3DS now...even though we just announce a massive improved Switch version for Fall 207...kkthxbye".

This doesnt even make sense.

This doesnt even make sense.

Why doesn't it make sense?

The device is hot right now and the people buying it are going to be looking for other stuff in the future. Getting in right now and announcing stuff before any competitors can means people will be paying attention to you.

Also it being the end of the FY is not stopping publishers announcing stuff for other platforms.

But people are already paying attention to them, it's sold out, and every unit in stock is sold in the next ten minutes. It makes no sense to try to appeal to more people when you can't even provide enough units for the people already interested.

Really? Someone should tell all those Switch owners who aren't buying the third party games. I'm sure they're all just waiting to buy the 25 year old Street Fighter 2.

The lack of third party Switch software js certainly concerning but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. The next 6 months should make it clear. But a lot of titles recently announced seemed like no brainers for the switch so. . .

First it was wait for the January event. When that appeared largely absent, it was wait for closer to launch. Numerous games announced, none for Switch, the stance was changed to wait for after launch......and now we are here: waiting for TGS.
That was only one guy, and Chris quickly mentioned what makes big events for Nintendo essentially not useful for announcing games: Direct.

I still remember the threads bemoaning the lack of notable titles during the first 3 months of PS4.
I should seriously get on making the first years' comparison, because even the almighty PS4 had major problems in getting games in its early state (I mean releases for its first months), the same Vita and Wii U. The 3DS had this problem as well, even if I'd dare to say less pronounced than other recent platforms, which was probably a consequence of coming off the DS and specific companies being way more prolific at retail than what they are now *cough Capcom cough*.
I still remember the threads bemoaning the lack of notable titles during the first 3 months of PS4 (or was it even a whole year). Thought there was even "PS4 has no games" memes that shortly circulated around here? Can't be sure on that. One thing for sure that it takes Bloodborne for a "a reason to buy PS4" thread to appear.

Its the Circle of Life xD
Aah, the beauty of nature.
Hardware launch still makes MC threads a terrible read I see.
PS4 is bad, but Switch far worse.

====

I think I muliquoted a post about how smart it is to not announce games right now but somehow it disappeared. Strange, but whatever, I want to say that is perhaps a nice move in the face of Nintendo Juggernauts like MK8 and Splatoon 2. However I don't get this worry on lacking third party announcement that circulating around lately, mainly because the system barely a month old. The Wii U was a total failure, third party needs to wait and see before making any decision. The system selling like hot cakes in launch weeks, and Nintendo shows confidence by doubled their production. Even then, you can't just expect third party to magically announce non-existent game out of thin air. That's why level headed regulars here say to wait for at least until October.

So we went from Switch sold 60.000 so it's not sold out to Switch is the new hotness in Japan? Say wut?

As I've said before there are 3rd party games planned for Switch (at least Japanese ones from what I know). Why aren't they announced? I don't know, maybe they're still on the first phases of planning and could end up being cancelled or maybe they're waiting for a better moment to announce them (E3, Directs, Company Fiscal Year results... Etc). But yeah, for now it's still premature to call the doom on 3rd party support for Switch.

Wasn't there something where Nintendo thought there were too many games at launch for Wii U (and then the drought) and instead they wanted to plan a proper schedule and reveal/release games at a proper cadence? I assume that's why they seem to be somewhat limiting the indies who get Switch devkits as well. Maybe they're doing something similar with the more traditional third parties, and whatever games that are in development are trying to have their reveal at the right time for the greatest impact. Not saying there are a lot, but I assume there's got to be a title here and there.

Anyways, indies are probably going to benefit a good deal from the general lack of third party support thanks to the indies showcase. I don't think Fast RMX and other titles would be as much attention otherwise. Also I have to presume the Switch seemingly being a much better dev environment over Wii U/3DS should help. The number of devs that have said things like "had trouble with Wii U, got X game running on Switch in a week/days" seems promising.

Some people are either being disingenuous or don't remember the PS4 launch at all. You don't remember the years of people demanding for the PS3 to die or all of the questions of why games were being made for the PS3 still? Or Tales of Zestiria, launched a year after the PS4 came out, being a PS3 exclusive in Japan? Or Persona 5 being a PS3 exclusive until about 7 months after launch when a PS4 version was announced? Samurai Warriors 4 initially just being PS3 and Vita? Kingdom Hearts II.5 only hitting PS3? Atelier taking almost two full years to hit PS4?

It took quite awhile for PS4 to start picking up major Japanese games. Even a lot of the PS3/PS4 or Vita/PS4 stuff were just PS3 or Vita games initially.

If YSO is right about Monster Hunter XX's second week then sell through would be around 1.2m after that, give or take some 100k on digital.

Almost everyone on YSO expects second week to be around 200k.

Also they all expect a bump on Nintendo Switch software.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
No, 3DS is a brutal comparison. It had major exclusives announced before launch like Resident Evil Revelations and Kingdom Hearts 3D. The closer comparisons would be Vita and Wii U and well....

Well, if you want to count third party announcements where they came out a year or more after launch and/or wasn't even titled when it was unveiled and was called a "demo", I'd say SMT/Octopath Traveler and Tales should count under your analysis.

Not to mention, DQ11 even if multi platform, is huge.

Wait, Atlus already had Persona Q planned in 2010 ? I really doubt that.
They just said Persona. I think they decided on the game itself later.

I updated it to the more complete list though. Will add in the Fall conference announcements (prior to release) in a moment.

Not Q, but just Persona, the game wasn't unveiled for some years still.

That reveal was funny, particularly because fans went nuts about how Vita was getting a dancing game while 3DS got a more proper RPG.

how big is Nojima Online as a retailer? I also wonder how big of a re-shipment they could've got.

Okay and here is what was announced for release in 2011 as of June 28th, 2011 (so post release and post E3, but prior to last-chance Japanese Fall game announcement season where stuff like Monster Hunter was announced for release 2-3 months later): http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=415693&page=1

It's either this or the above post that most closely mirror our current phase of the cycle depending on your perspective.

Hi, I have decided to make a thread about the 3DS in 2011 (although some of it probably won't all be released in the same year...), specifically the game lineup. I have always enjoyed maintaining lists about stuff so I figured why not.

Not Q, but just Persona, the game wasn't unveiled for some years still.

That reveal was funny, particularly because fans went nuts about how Vita was getting a dancing game while 3DS got a more proper RPG.

Well... it is an RPG. It's not the one we wanted, but still. lol

Not that it matters at all to anyone but completionists but the digital version of Tetsudou Nippon! Rosen Tabi: Kikansha Thomas-hen Oigawa Tetsudou! also releases on the 3DS eShop next week.

If it does it's not listed anywhere yet, Nintendo, Famitsu or GameFaqs.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Since we've talked so much about third party announcements before and after launch, actual releases and such, I've decided to create two posts where we set the records clear on different points of discussion

1) Announcements made by Japanese publishers / developers since the console's unveiling up to the launch
2) Releases by Japanese publishers / developers from the launch to the console's first Holiday (in case of an Holiday release, the subsequent one)

Major rules behind the comparison
- I'm sticking to actual game announcements. So, these lists won't feature all those mentioned series in the initial 3DS list from E3 2010 for example, as well as the series mentioned for Switch back at the January event (personally, I think they'll turn out to be more "real" announcements than what happened with 3DS, given the different announcement policy, but I watn a comparison that's as just as possible, so I won't put them for Switch :p).
- digital-only announcements / releases aren't included, retail releases only

Doesn't Sonic Forces count for Switch announcements? From the sonic wiki "The title was first mentioned at the Tokyo Joypolis Sonic 25th party on 25 June 2016 under the name "Project Sonic 2017". Thanks for the list.

Personally I feel like these were the bigger titles in each of those lists (aka could/did sell over 100K):
3DS: Kingdom Hearts 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Resident Evil Mercenaries, Layton Mask of Miracle, Tales of the Abyss, Fantasy Life, Layton v Ace Attorney, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP

Vita: Persona 4 Golden, FFX / X-2 HD remaster

Wii U: Monster Hunter 3G, Dragon Quest X

PS4: Kingdom Hearts 3, FFXV, MGSV (Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain), Yakuza Isshin

Switch: TBD, but my guess is Dragon Quest XI, the vague SMT title, and perhaps Bomberman R legs it up to 100K.

The 3DS list was awesome, the Vita list had a couple names but they generally sold poorly, Wii U was just had nothing except those 2 ports, and PS4 had a couple really big games to release down the line, but nothing outside of that or close to launch (except Isshin & MGS:GZ). DQXI is awesome for Switch, but is multiplatform. Sonic Forces will probably do well enough in the West on Switch. The rest though... is just lots of smaller 3rd party titles thus far for retail.

So we went from Switch sold 60.000 so it's not sold out to Switch is the new hotness in Japan? Say wut?

From what I've heard there are lotteries held at major japanese video game stores for the chance to buy a Switch every week, so yes, the system is pretty hot in Japan(like in most other countries).

Nintendo sells, what they can ship and I guess the next MC numbers will be again something around 60k as the ramped up production of the system won't kick in 'till around the end of April I guess.

Thanks for putting in the work Mpl90. Overall I'd still say Switch doesn't compare favorably to either 3DS or Vita and whilst it has more smaller
irrelevant
games than the PS4 nothing compares to FFXV and KH3(which are de facto exclusives unlike DQXI).

SMT is multiplatform and even if wasn't SMT and Octopath Traveler aren't close to comparable to Resident Evil or Kingdom Hearts. As for Tales we don't even know what they have planned(if it ever materializes), it might not even end up as significant as Tales of the Abyss 3D.

The actual announcement was on July 22nd, 2016 at the 25th anniversary party. That's where they unveiled it alongside the trailer and platforms. It was first spoken of at Joypolis though.

Guys, I have a problem. I have been reading the 2005 archived Media-Create threads for the last 4 hours while nursing a hangover. The story arc is beautiful.

Does anyone have the list of unreleased Japanese third party games slated for Vita and/or PS4 in 2017?

I think that's also a list worth comparing to since the odds of getting Switch third party exclusives when the Switch has above 360/PS3 level hardware are low, meaning they're also the list of games that were candidates for a Switch release.

So this is it? After 3 weeks and what can be considered as a successful launch, switch is already considered a wasted cause by some of the most optimistic and enthusiast GAFers when it comes to Nintendo?

Well, I guess it had a good run. :^)

To me the difference this time is that this system can be considered by devs as complementary to the almighty PS4. Portability is a big deal for a lot of people. Of course, especially Japan. Going multiplat (including Switch) has more sense now than it had with WiiU (lol). And With 3DS, horse power and tools were not there.

If this time, no one is on board (which cannot be infered after 3 weeks on the markets, no matter how accurate are your sales numbers, any sane person should aknowledge that), well, I guess they just will never show up on a nintendo system, powerful or not.

SMT Switch is multiplatform ?

We don't know. The only hint is that it's called an "HD" prorject alongside the 3DS game specified as a "3DS" project on their website.

Folks take that to mean it's likely PS4-bound also. It could very well be Switch-exclusive, we don't know.
