NieR: Automata Review Thread

Personally, I would still be all up in this game even if it got Drakengard 3 scores, as long as those scores were based on finishing the damn game.

And I loved D3 despite the horrible technical flaws (thanks Deadly Premonition studio!)

The reason I care about the metascore at all this time because I actually do know people who would buy this game if it was 90 instead of 89 and I want more people to get into what I'm into. I want more people to talk about the Drakengard/Nier universe with that got into it through this game.

I questioned some things in that last thread and was told I shouldn't buy the game. Because I gave an opinion about review scores.

I'm giving them my money, because I'm super hyped for this game (currently waiting on PC). Jesus though, the hostility around all this is absurd.

He didn't though, he didn't finish it. He didn't do his job. It's a job, you are forced to do things for monetary value, one thing you don't like doesn't mean you can half ass your job.
He's supposed to give his feelings of the game, and his feeling was "not worth completing."

I would love to know what difference they think a measly 1% signifies on Metacritic of all places and why 90 all of a sudden seems to be this holy threshold with everything below subpar.

Chances are, you weren't ever going to convince these people to play the game if their metrics are that daft.

This thread is a shambles over ONE poor review. Cool off and PM a mod to unlock it when the last wave of reviews hits and we can try again.

PM'd a mod to unlock this since there's only been one review on Metacritic in the last 3 days, and the Easy Allies review is up.

True authorship is a rare thing to find in games, yet it’s very present in Nier: Automata. Like Yoko Taro’s past work, Automata challenges gaming norms through narrative structure, subjects discussed, and even how the nature of games can be used to convey ideas that other mediums can’t. In the past, appreciating these things meant accepting middling or even poor technical and mechanical aspects. With Nier: Automata, far fewer excuses are necessary. It’s a bold, stylish, and intelligent game that leaves an indelible mark.

Not a mod, but obviously don't repeat the same case of going after one negative review and certainly don't start linking to the reviewer's twitter or whatever.

Btw Metacritic is now at 88 :)

For a game like this, which is unconventional and creatively challenging, 88 is an incredibly good meta-score. For a creator who by his own admittance "makes weird games for weird people", its a truly remarkable thing.

I wonder if that guy played MGSV past the first set of credits.

On the second mission

because it has credits all the time.

Anyway, glad to see this game being praised so much in 99% of the reviews. Certainly deserves it.

Really want to see this get goty but it's up against Zelda, horizon and red dead 2.

I expect Zelda to take the good majority. It's main competitor will be Red Dead 2 if it releases this year. Even the RPG of the year, it still goes up against Horizon and Persona 5 though.

imagine if you could travel in time one year back and tell people that a yoko taro game would considerably out-review the latest mass effect

people would think you were crazy

Obviously a a whole fucking lot of people if you follow review threads which you obviously do. Is this a rhetorical question?
As a huge Yoko Taro fan, I obviously want the game to get reviewed well, but honestly I don't getthe all up in pitchforks mentality that people get into between an 88 and 89 or an 89 or 90. Numerical scores should be meaningless, a review should be spelled out and explained. Review outrage culture so silly nowadays.

The bit that stands out for me and I agree with most here is the part where they say in the past they had to accept middling technical or mechanical aspects. That rings true. As much as I liked a lot of aspects Of the first Nier and some of the Drakengards, actually playing them wasnt the best.

This game though retains what made those other games stand out. They still have the quirky yet captivating story, characters, world and amazing music. But they've married that with a game that is just brilliant to play as well.

Platinum x Yoko Taro seemed like it would he a good fit to me in theory. Both covering each other's weakness while retaining they're strengths. But I wasn't sure if it would work out like that. Thankfully it has and not only is this easily my favourite Yoko Taro game, it's also by far the best Platinum game I've played. Nier Automata is awesome and probably supercedes Bloodborne and Witcher III now as my favourite game thus far this generation. Long may this partnership continue

Witcher 3 was my favorite by and far this generation, and I'm really, really, really close to agreeing with that statement. I'm giving the game more time to sit in my brain before I make that call, but it's getting close to toppling my beloved Witcher 3.

What's funny is that while I was always going to play this at some point, I had no intention of gettibg it anytime soon or maybe even this year. But the demo blew me away. It's been a years, maybe even a decade since a demo has had that affect on me

Same. I had absolutely 0 hype for this game.
I was a huge fan of the first one, but when I saw this reveal, I was "meh" about it. Enjoyed the demo, but it still didn't hype me up enough. Enough to buy it, but not excitedly.
I'm glad I didn't care about it ahead of time. Made the game so much more impactful.

How does the combat stack up against Vanquish, MGSR, Bayonetta?

Bayonetta to me was incredible smooth in how you dodged attacks. It felt so good. Been looking for combat like that ever since!

Feels very good to play, but it doesn't go to the exact same depths. There's a demo out if you wanna try it for yourself.
