New Title. Read above.

Does anyone know what is going on with 3DS stock right now?

Specifically in the US?

I browsed and saw there was a thread about it, but it was posted in February...

I don't see how focusing on Switch would lead to this much scarcity.

Revision incoming? Price Drop?

None of the retailers around me seem to have any in stock either

Shit's been bad since before Christmas.
Nintendo don't care.

Either they plan to hold it for a price drop, have a final revision coming, or just really wanted to shift focus to producing more Switch units. Nobody knows.

Here in France there're N3DS and N3DSXL everywhere, in any shop, no problem.

I know OP asked about the US but it can give an idea about other regions too.

Nintendo has refurbs in stock for 170, they always come in impeccable condition.

I just bought a semi-used one on eBay for 150 (New 3DS XL with IPS screen), there are many around that price, charger included.

Didn't ty brick and mortar but why would I?

Actually pretty common.

So let's stunt inventory of a product to try to sell another product which itself is damn near impossible to find on store shelves.

Makes sense to me!

Also Nintendo still has 3DS games in development. Selling someone a Switch means they can't sell them those games.

My local Best Buy got some in for the first time in months, and it was two 2DSs. Also they have yet to have BOTW on WiiU, but dozens of copies for Switch. I assume all their production focus is on Switch, with this also being the beginning of the end for the 3DS.

Saw quite a bit of stock of New 3DS XL units and 2DS here in Canada.

Where at?

Forgot about Nintendo refurb, but still such low stock is off since they're still making games

Maybe there will be a final revision

fr fr?

The Pikmin can only make one system at a time and Switch is in demand right now.

I was at target and saw one 2ds with mk7 for 79 and I thought about pulling the trigger and buying it for my pokemon obsessed six yr old (I don't trust him to not lose or damage my n3dsxl lol). This was last week. The next day I went to target not to buy it but to pick up a switch accessory and it was gone. That was the only spotting of a Nintendo console I've seen at my local target on the shelf in the last three months.

At this rate he will just get his own switch for Christmas in a couple yrs when he can appreciate it more and it will likely be 200 bucks with a pack in around Christmas (2019)

Niche games. I don't expect Shadows of Valentia sells as good as Awakening or Fates. But it's a global release, so who knows.

Still, we are talking about a 6 year console. It's dying and the hack scene is strong.

This reminds me of the comment someone made to me a few days ago about the 3ds, that sales were up 77%. I'm not sure what region was being referenced, but it surely can't be on the NA side. I haven't seen a 3ds in-store in months.

Go into the wild.

I bought two N3DSXL's, one for myself and one for a friend. I was looking online for ages and nobody had any, but I found quite a few at both of my neighborhood Targets and at one of my neighborhood Walmarts.

I hate shopping in person, but I didn't have any issues finding them this way.

Ive been trying to grab a new 3dsxl in black.Got the blackfriday mario black edition and have been playing DQ7 then want to play DQ8, xeno, bravely2, and the other fire emblem games. Really want the bigger screen now.

Has been Impossible to get one. instock site pretty much all out of stock. Last night almost bought one form best buy but was not able to ship or pickl up within 250miles lol

It would be nice if they did release a final revision thats thinner and actually has 2 IPS screen guaranteed for a change.

FYI- Nintendo refurb site has them 170. But afraid to order since i cant easily return if it has dead pixels or both tn or bottom ips only lol

BTW... anyone else thing the galaxy one top cover looks tacky as hell? Love the blue/purble internally but that nebula looks like @55.

BestBuy.com has them in and out of stock on most days if you want to keep an eye on it.

http://www.nowinstock.net/videogaming/consoles/3dsxl/full_history.php

I did a quick check on local store pickup options for my four local Best Buys and here's the choices:

Veterans Blvd:
  • Red 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7
  • Red New 3DSXL
Lakeside:
  • Blue 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7
  • Red 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7
  • Red New 3DSXL
Harahan:
  • Red 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7
  • Blue 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7
Westbank:
  • Red 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7
  • Blue 2DS w/ Mario Kart 7

So it looks like if you want a 2DS you're good to go, especially a red 2DS.

New 3DSXL is only available in red, but you can get it at half of the locations in the area.

New 3DS, the GOAT, is sadly available nowhere. DAMMIT NINTENDO

I am not native English speaker, can someone please explain the title to me?
What does ''fr fr'' mean? Is it acronym or something?

It's not you. I'm a native English speaker who aced the language side of the SATs and I had to spend 30 fucking seconds parsing that shit title.

So are IPS screens that good? I've been reading posts on GAF about it and how some posters are adamant on finding one. I haven't checked because I'm afraid of finding out what mine is. That would ruin me.

You've got your typical elitists but for 99% of the population the TN screens are fine.

...no? That's pretty pretty dumb.

Probably something like "we can't manufacture and ship these two devices and accessories in equal amounts and the focus is on the switch right now" which aligns with the fact that the switch started manufacturing in late 2016.

anyway, it's been in stock on gamestop.com and best buy lately. Amazon gets a shipment roughly once a month that sells out within five minutes. Local retail stock is non-existent. Target will have 1-2 every few weeks.

I wouldnt go as far as calling people elitists for wanting a superior product. For a like 5 year old console in its "possibly" last revision its shitty of them to NOT throw in both IPS screens.

$200 bucks is quite alot for such an old console. They already cut corners with the power adapter. Im sure the screen wont cost so much more.

I need a break down on what fr fr means Stat. Apparently I'm either no longer "hip" to modern slang, (probable), or OP pretty consistently formulates threads that are grammatically comparable to what one would find in a second grade book report, (also probable.)

I wonder if it's supply or demand? Things seemed short around the holidays too, but turned out they shipped more than the year before. January through March is usually a pretty slow quarter anyway, with worldwide shipments of around a million the last few years.

I know the manager at gamestop and they didn't get a single shipment of new hardware for months after a huge restock in November. Most of the hardware was pretty much gone before december even started at that store. This lines up with online shops being out of stock throughout that entire period and other local stores having little to no stock at all. People attributed the lack of units due to the holiday rush but I don't believe that.

They just released a pikachu N3ds xl last month. I highly doubt there is a revision coming.

Idk from the feel of it I'm getting flashbacks of Wii U stock from 2015-2016

I really don't think there is this little demand I think Nintendo might honestly just be phasing out the 3DS

I would've liked one more revision though before they gave it its final farewell

Regardless it's still supposed to be in production and it's hard as fuck to find

I suspect they ramped down 3DS production a bit too early and now aren't making enough to keep them on shelves. With the Switch apparently selling well, I don't think they'll ramp up again either.

It's gotten pretty bad... the last restock I've seen was the pikachu 3DS.

Reselling prices have also gotten crazy. I was able to sell a near perfect pink 3DS XL for $280... gotten near $240 for the yoshi 3DS XL... last year when i toyed with selling them I was looking at $70 to $100 less

Nintendo should buy back their inventory here in MX to sell it in US and Canada, because it sure as hell won't be moving here anytime soon with the current exchange rate. I can go right now to my mall and find loads of 2DS, N3DSXL and even some Pokemon Red and Blue New 3DS systems, and they will stay there for months and months to come.

As someone who understands operations and supply chain management, here's what is likely happening. Nintendo could build enough manufacturing capacity to supply the 3DS and the Switch at peak capacity at the same time, but then then after the launch window when demand has slowed down for the Switch, and with the 3DS nearing the end of its lifespan, they would have excess capacity and all their investments in building manufacturing capacity would be wasted.

So Nintendo is faced with a trade-off. Do they build enough manufacturing capacity to ensure adequate supply when demand is at its peak, only to have excess capacity later, or do they stick with a smaller capacity now and have a balanced capacity over the long-term? Nintendo has chosen the smaller, but more long-term efficient manufacturing capacity.
