Bloodstained for Wii U cancelled in favor of Switch

Sucks for those who REALLY wanted to get this on WiiU, but it really is the only option that makes sense. There's next to no good reason to be making new WiiU games right now.
Specially when developing for said hardware would require making a special port that had to be developed by a separate company.
V-vita version is still a go tho right?
That's a good question. Vita version was basically in the same spot as the Wii U one, but unlike the latter the former does not have a successor.

What bait and switch? It was a Kickstarter for the development of the title, and once the realities of development hit it got delayed. Wii U is now out of the picture for good, and they went as far as to offer a refund.

The Wii U is no less popular today than it was then. They got a boatload of extra money after announcing it, said they were committed to porting it even though the damn engine doesn't support the Wii U, now they've lost interest.

I swear some people think anything is acceptable just so long as it happened on Kickstarter.

Choo Choo! I'm ready to board the Switch train for Bloodstained! And a physical version too?! I'll happily kick my vita version to the curb.

Seems entirely reasonable to me, considering that the game will be coming out at least a year after the last Nintendo game released on WiiU and the last few consoles were shipped.

"Height of its popularity"

Latest Kickstarter Wii U bait-and-switch, really tired of this shit.
Bait-and-Switch would imply that there is no option to get a refund or to move your order to any of the other half-dozen options.

This isn't the only Wii U Kickstarter game out there. Hive Jump is out on Steam but they are pushing for Wii U version instead of moving to Switch.

Switching to the Switch just seems like a great idea since it is selling like hotcakes right now. Anyone know how difficult it is to change platforms mid/end cycle?

It sucks for Wii U owners, I know, but this was the most logical thing to do, honestly. In fact I think a game like this works perfectly on the Switch.

What? The Wii U still had some support back then, now it's dead and buried. It's straight up legacy hardware at this point.

Wii U owners are old school players by a big margin. Im sure many backed for Wii U version.
Yes but how many of those backers will still only own a WiiU by mid 2018? My guess it's not many.

This game is coming to PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, XB1, Switch, and Vita in 2018. If you are hardcore enough to back the spiritual successor to a niche hit from 1997 chances are you'll have something to play it on next year.

They said themselves that development support from Nintendo has all but dried up. Wii U is very clearly less popular if the manufacturer has dropped everything in favor of its successor. They're willing to give back the boatload of extra money.

It would be unacceptable if they took the money and ran, i.e. Mighty No. 9 3DS and Vita.

Are we talking about the same Wii U? This was probably the only third-party game announced that year.

Why are they only asking for support from Nintendo now? I thought they were rebuilding Unreal 4 on Wii U to make this work. That doesn't sound like a 12-month project.

Why release it to a dead console.

They made the right decision. If you're a Nintendo fan, there's no reason to not have or get a Switch.

They said this was a possibility a long time ago.

It's also a 2018 game. Even if you're a Nintendo only gamer, you'll probably have gotten a Switch by then and if you were dead set on Wii U, you can get your money back.

Had it even been releasing this year they should have followed through on the wii u version but there's no point releasing a wii u game in 2018

You know, this is second Nintendo-focused kickstarter giving Wii U backers the finger. I gotta wonder what percentage was made up of Wii U pledges.

I'm more surprised it took them this long to officially announce it.
Everyone knew Wii U wouldn't survive until 2017 let alone 2018.

Anyway, this should be a great game on the go for those interested in the Switch version.

Yes, that's correct, except that it's not correct.

said they were committed to porting it even though the damn engine doesn't support the Wii U, now they've lost interest.

Note: The actual reason for this is that Nintendo isn't interested to provide the kind of behind the scenes development support they need and it's uncertain if they'll still be certifying releases by the the time the game is out.

I don't know why you need to project like this. If you just responded with the truth, no one would have blinked an eye. Here's the post, pre-written for you: "I already own a Wii U and it's my preferred system. I don't plan on buying a Switch or any other system any time soon, so now I can't play this game that I paid for. This is disappointing for me. I guess I'll take the refund." It's totally okay for this announcement to simultaneously be the right decision for the project and bad news for you. That sucks, man. I'm sympathetic. I hate when I'm excited for something and it gets yanked out from under me.

The Wii U stretch goal came in really late into the project. So I'd wager not that much.

I'd imagine if it were a large percentage they probably wouldn't be pulling the plug on that version.

Vita version not mentioned?

Well, they say:

If you selected the Wii U version and don't want any of the Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Vita versions, you're eligible for a cancellation and refund if you meet all the following criteria:

Unsurprised. I'm sure most everyone who owned a Wii U now owns a Switch or will within the next year.

I think it will take a few more years for that to happen, once Nintendo is past porting the WiiU games.

It is logical, at least they offer a refund for Wii U only owners, but from a bussiness point of view releasing it on the Wii U is incinerating money.

Fuck them, and fuck them because Vita is next, before they had another company to port UE4 (sort of) to Switch and Vita.. now with Vita only out of the equation it's only matter of time.

Are the surveys locked/are there plans for a reminder or updated one? Initially went for a Vita version as my additional copy but if I can get that Switch version I'm gonna be like ayy

I mean hopefully it's not just people who initially pledged for a WiiU version who get asked whether they want to change or cancel their pledge

EDIT: it's fine, just updated from my fangamer pledge management page ayy

Really? The thing that bums me out about the Switch for 2D platformers is the absence of a d-pad. I actually prefer the separate buttons for occasional usage like swapping weapons and stuff, but I don't like using it as the main control. The day Nintendo sells an alternative left Joycon with a d-pad (ideally in the position where the left analogue stick currently is) can't come soon enough.

Considering the game is still in early development and the engine work and porting was being outsourced to another company, that sounds like it could easily take longer than 12 months, even if the game wasn't getting delayed.

Vita stuff is still being made and selling though...
