Eurogamer: BotW running on CEMU showing remarkable progress (READ MOD POST)

Not sure how I feel about this. Nintendo's always hated emulators but the most popular emulation was always older consoles 10-20 years out of date and that something Nintendo could easily compete against with stuff like virtual console. But CEMU, whether the developers meant it intentionally or not, is essentially competing with the new hardware by having it's killer app playable almost instantly on a piece of free software. They can't compete with that. I don't know I know this should be fine as long as you own the game but the whole situation just feels icky.

I don't see it that way. They are emulating the Wii U, not the Switch. The Wii U is dead.

So do you need a fast CPU and a fast GPU for good performance in regards to WiiU-Emulation?

If I remember correctly PS2-emulators for example just need a fast CPU.

Probably best not to tread down this path. One thread got locked already.

This thread isn't for discussing the moral/eithical/legal issues. Just the emulation itself.

Easier to see the differences (even if GIMP does some processing to it or whatever)

The switch picture has broken textures on the weapon/shield/tune choosing symbol on the top left of the hud?

Are we sure that's actually the switch? That makes it look emulated

It's pretty impressive how fast it's progressing, but I'm a bit sad that they didn't just all pool their effort into decaf instead.

Also that article is really poor.

CPU is most important currently, but from what I've heard integrated graphics don't work very well. I have an i5-3570k (slightly overclocked) and it runs everything flawlessly once the shader cache is built.

I'm looking forward to playing this on CEMU as much as everyone here but that image is not true at all.
I'm playing on switch at the moment and it looks way better than this, nowhere near this bad and blurry.
that picture surely can't be from the switch version, look at the d-pad symbol.

Both screenshots are running on CEMU, look at the top left corner.

I think that's what's happening here which is really misleading.
We all know it will look better in CEMU, there is no need to do this to make the switch version look worse than it actually is.

Currently playing on the Wii U, but at this rate I might actually pause and import my save for 1.7.4 - out of curiosity, can I dump the digital version of the game? Dumping instructions made it seem possible, but I wasn't clear of BotW was also doable.

You can dump digital versions. Half of my library is digital games!

For you.
So what issues are left with botw?
Pre-rendered cutscenes are borked ( CEMU has no proper media player for the format Zelda uses built in yet)
Other than that, i think its mostly minor graphical issues here and there, and it needing a bit of optimization. The game should be playable from start to end with this update.

Again, pretty damn amazing how fast they're evolving. But the only thing I don't really like about CEMU is that it's not open source. I've read 2 possible "reasons" for that, the first it's that their Patreon would suffer for it(don't know why) and the 2nd is that they've managed to get access to leaked WiiU developer files/code and are using it on the emulator, which could make them liable to get sued by Nintendo. Both doesn't make much sense for me, but it's still sad that it's not open source.

Remember way back in the day when a bunch of people said that this game would take several months to even be presentable?

Well it didn't look good at the beginning. We have to take some things into account though: The Emulation of the WiiU Hardware is very close to being "perfect", however I fully expected a longer period of time to fix the immense issues BotW had.

I am a bit curious about Cemu and the way it emulates games, it's almost like the developers are using an approach much like the emulator "Corn" did for the N64 ages ago. That one was able to run a few games almost perfectly with incredible speeds(compared to rivaling emulators) but the devs had to take care of every game that they wanted to emulate specifically to make sure it runs well or rather at all. The emulator was discontinued at some point and is only compatible with a hand full of games. I wonder if the cemu team uses a similar approach and makes emulation possible on a game to game basis. -Given the rather small library of games the WiiU had that might even be the best way to emulate the system I guess...

Well if the second were true they'd certainly try to keep it closed but I can't imagine them being dumb enough to use stolen code.

They'd get sued into oblivion.

It might be a screen from the "stock" game running in CEMU (so @720p) mislabeled as "Switch" instead of Wii U

Their Patreon would suffer for it because if it was open source everyone could just fork it and get their own hacks out before the "official" ones, and there wouldn't be the incentive of people supporting on Patreon to get the new builds one week before public release.

Lighting looks overdone in the CEMU version. And not sure giving the models such definition really helps the game, as it removes some of the surrealist, painterly graphical quality. Also why is its minimap so blurry?

Any idea when is 1.7.4 coming out for non-patreon people? Still can't believe how fast they managed to improve Cemu in such a short amount of time.

The minimap will most likely get fixed. If you look at links model(and the shopkeeper in the back) side by side then it becomes obvious that the higher definition is not a problem but a welcome addition:

Who made these screenshots?
It's clearly not the switch version or the wii u version.
Look at the d-pad selection, it's from a CEMU build and not running on wii u or switch.
I've played the game on wii u and it's not this bad.
I've played 40% of the game on switch and it looks miles better than this.

This is amazing. If they can get Xenoblade 2 working then I won't even have to buy a switch

Will Xenoblade 2 have a WiiU Release?! I thought it were a switch exclusive. -If you are hoping to emulate the switch: Cemu has nothing to do with that and I am quite certain Switch Emulation will take a long time, just take a look at how long it took to get a decent 3DS Emulator.

They upscaled the Resolution of the WiiU Version(720p) to 1080p and most likely in a "dirty" way. They should have compared the game in 720p not 1080p(most likely downsampled from 4k). So yes, that comparison is a bit unfair, however you won't get more details from the 720p source than you see in the screenshot...

EDIT: The upscaled the... Switch Version to 1080p...

If this were a Switch emulator (which it isn't) and you want to play your own copy of Xenoblade 2, you'd probably still need a Switch to dump the ROM - or softmod somebody else's.

What's going on with the Plus icon in this screenshot? It's distorted in both shots so maybe it's normal. (plus icon between the Shield & Sword, upper left area).

It's just a graphical glitch with emu and rendering certain layers. It will be fixed just like the blurry map layer if the focus is all in on Zelda.

Gotta say though, Link looks fucking good with AA, it's a shame he looks the way he does on Switch as that doesn't do the art department justice.

One important thing is download the shaders cache of every game. At current state, CEMU don't run smooth when never displayed element appears for the first time. But you can download those shaders and run smooth the full compatible games.

Woaw that is one bullshit shot you can see color banding all over that so called switch screenshot. Never seen that in my version tbh

I don't care about this unless they add VR.
That's when i will buy a good game pc exclusively for Zelda.
So, never right?

Adding VR is not only about a technical challenge, this game is not an FPS. Lucky's Tale on the Rift is what comes to mind, and the game had to be designed from the ground up to properly support VR.
