Phantom Dust Remaster now 8GB after uncompressed cutscenes were found

Aw for fuck sake of course cutscenes should be compressed. If video files were not compressed at all they would take up extremely large amounts of space.

I'm not talking about lol a 1080p video. A fucking raw video for 5 minites can be anywhere between 15GB - 100GB depending on the codec. Yes of course it should be compressed.

Quoting myself from the last Phantom Dust thread, but those Shannon Loftis tweets are a bit dated...

More recently:

Which isn't saying much in terms of what they have done, but I don't think its as simple as just using the games original resolution and framerate.

My bet is whatever day Xbox Arena's go public. My reasoning? It was the most prominent feature mentioned at the E3 reveal for this game.

Since we know that's coming next month, set me down for April 17th.

Not sure why they're being cagey about it. Is it being emulated instead of a full on actual port?...

It's a very interesting situation.

So back at E3 when this game was revealed, around the same time we had Adam Isgreen say here on GAF that they didn't want to promise anything they might not be able do and at worst, we can expect a perfect port of PD with a steadier frame rate.

Which is a bit odd by itself, but we also have a Polygon interview with Phil Spencer where he revealed some background on how he had only heard about the rerelease just weeks before E3, and how apparently the game was nearly finished by then.

So, if the port was nearly finished a year ago, your left to wonder what could have been going on this last year. We still don't even have a solid release date, just a vague "before E3".

What I'm left to believe is a few possibilities:

A. The game has been held back to line up with the release of Arena and the updated Club feature for the Xbox OS, as both were featured heavily in the reveal for the rerelease.

And/or B. They took the time to do what they could graphically to the game which has resulted into something between a remaster and a simple port

And my own tinfoil hat theory:

And/or C. The time spent working on the game (either by MS or Code Mystics, the other team working on the rerelease who also did some work on Rare Replay hint hint) resulted in an emulator (or perhaps an easy way of porting) for the OG Xbox, and the rerelease might give that megaton away, so they are holding it until right next to E3 so they can drop that bomb.

Love the theories. I would say B is maybe more likely, while I would love for A and C to be true as well. Mainly C though... Please be C! :p

So if this comes out in early May (that's my guess). Then we get an unexpected Scorpio event to follow a few weeks later, and then E3 happens!? That would be one hell of a month for me. :D

That's stupid, cutscenes should be compressed and offered at a lower size for the NA residents. Nothing good about this tweet.

They will be. The difference is they found uncompressed originals that they could compress for distribution in much better quality.

If they were truly uncompressed, they would take a lot more than 4 additional gb.

360 BC didn't render in 720p it was upscaled very well.
I've heard so much mixed things about this I really want a definitive answer if the 360 actually does render games natively in 720p or if it's a really good upscale. I know for a fact vertical sync and 4xMSAA (some sort of AA at least)

Okay some looking up seems to be this - 480p upscale to whatever resolution the console is set to with 4xMSAA. Native 720p games will also upscale. Were any 1080i compatible games BC on 360? There were a few.

One of the single most sad (and maddening) things about media is the inability to either think ahead or archive development assets properly. Either through lack of resources, time, money etc. Either way though it's real unfortunate when you find out that someone didn't save the original source for a rendered file, negatives for a film etc. I am constantly wondering at this very moment if developers of games are creating original ultra high resolution textures and the like and then just scaling down for the contemporary release in the event that a future release could look better. It's probably a silly thing to worry about, but I always feel like we get to a certain point and realize how much we regret not doing that. Especially with video. Pre-rendered video is the worst offender.

Guys, if this is coming to PC, how could it possibly be locked to 480p?

You realize the game came out in the age of 480p, right?

I don't think anyone wants video that was encoded and compressed in 2004. The quality looked pretty bad even when it released IIRC.

The twitter account in the OP said that it's "not just upscaled" although they're not replacing the assets and that there's technical stuff afoot. I think it's being rendered at a proper resolution, not 480p, no matter what that quote says there.

https://twitter.com/Ishmae1/status/826952088433233920

Shannon Loftis, who you're quoting there, also said this:

"We're working with the original game code, but running it on an Xbox One, it just looks better, since the Xbox One is a much more powerful system. It looks more modern, the heart of the gameplay is the same, and the best part is, we're adding Xbox Live, with all Xbox Live features. It's an Xbox Play Anywhere game, it supports cross-play and cross-save, and best of all, achievements."

There's no way this is 480p IMO.

Probably referring to shaders when she said "original rendering".

Guys, if this is coming to PC, how could it possibly be locked to 480p?

Emulation could result in that.

Apparently it's also crossplay, so the Xbox and PC.. version.. emulation.. will probably match.

I can't think of them offhand but I remember a couple of PC ports that even though they let you set a res, it just scaled the internal res to the number you chose.

either way the caginess is weird. They did something similar with Perfect Dark XBLA (hey, PD.. and PD!) where they were cagey about the technical details. turned out it was an actual port and ran at 1080p/60fps

I think I'm fine forgoing HD Phantom Dust if it means I get a functional OG Xbox emulator.

as long as someone gets Ninja Gaiden Black injected in there on like Day 2

I've heard so many good things, that I'm really looking forward to this to be released.
And 8Gb, in a world where ME:Andromeda is 43GB, Gow4 is 80GB and Halo MCC is +60GB it's really nothing

Phantom Dust is a masterpiece. I don't think those who haven't played it quite realize how substantial and important this game is.

I dunno, anyone who seriously expected MS to be releasing a 480p game in 2017 was kind of out of their tree.

As much as I'm sure they don't want to overstate what's there, they seemed weirdly reticent to just say "no, it's not the original resolution," even to some extent in the most recent comment in this thread. This is the news we all wanted, but the reluctance in official statements to just say "hey, the resolution is improved from the original" stood out. That's (as you well know) an easy question to answer in 2017, even if it's not a simple number to quote due to changes during development or a clever tech solution.
