Neo Geo games coming to Nintendo Switch

The only thing I don't like about Shock Troopers is that it's too good.

For those playing the first time make sure you turn off the violence filter if you are not squeamish. Some of the death animations are pretty cool but they are off by default.

Well... I took a bunch of screenshots and then loaded them up only to remember the screenshot feature adds a ton of jpeg artifacts. They are not entirely worthless, but it does make sub-pixel noise difficult to be precise about. This is the best I could figure out though I forgot to enable widescreen to make the math easier, and am cropping using a laptop touchpad sooo.. not ideal, work with me here. I am going to redo it all pulling direct samples out of HDMI this weekend.

100x100 = 576x448 = 2x
133x100 = 766x594 = 2.66x
150x100 = 864x672 = 3x
160x100 = 922x717 = 3.2ish
161x100 = This tops it out at 720p

The curious thing is this seems to be true regardless of TV or handheld mode. Which would mean that it always renders 720p and scales up to 1080p (blargh) in TV mode, or possibly the screenshot just uses 720p no matter what. I'll know more when I take better shots.

In short, if you care about pixels even a tiny bit the only settings to play on are 100x100 (2x) and 150x100 (3x). 150 should work pretty well for scanlines depending on how they do it (I didn't dig much into the scaline screenshots, I'm tired and these shots suck anyway), but this may all go out the window when I see what is really happening at 1080p.
Ok, actually all the tests were made by someone who has an Xbox One game, not Switch. I was assuming it was the exact same thing, but maybe not.

Still what you report is a bit ugly (thanks for taking the time !), especially the fact that the output would still be 720p even on a 1080p TV... That's too bad... and that's probably true, because otherwise, you would be have to adjust the ratio when going from handheld to TV, and Hamster probably wanted to avoid that.

What is worse is that in what you say, 100x100 means 2x, so exactly x4 would be possible with 200x100, thus enabling clean scanlines (they would still have to put a better filter, like I explained before).

If I had to make a summary of what we should ask Hamster on this topic :
- allow exactly x4 resolution for TV (and output 1080p)
- allow the better scanline filter for x4

That's pretty much it in fact.

I will "soon" have a Switch, and I will buy a game to test this. (console is ordered, I am waiting for availability, France).

probably because MS3 is obscene bullshit hard
but fair if you practice
.

My current goal is MS3 with 30-35 continues. I've watched a 1cc of the game and felt inadequate, but at least I learned a few tricks.

I seriously hope that Switch keeps getting these Neo Geo games. There are SO many amazing titles.

If you want to feel more appreciable progress try breaking it down to continues per stage. Going from say 5 continues to none on stage 1 is very attainable, whereas that same accomplishment of going 35 to 30 overall can feel less impactful. Still an improvement, sure, but breaking these things down helps loads with being overwhelmed.

Also working out your par and PBs for each stage tells you immediately where can be improved. Stage 4 is obviously going to be a big sponge, which should itself be broken down, but earlier stages may surprise you.

Played through Shock Troopers the last day and loved it, gonna replay that one and Metal Slug 3 a lot of times.

I'd say you can't really go wrong with either but for me Shock Troopers is more fun to just pick up and play.

Based on my new exposure to Shock Troopers, I would agree with this statement.

Nice, Shock Troopers it is! Being able to play 2P with detached joycons is huge.

Well, to be fair, MS3 is insanely hard.

Yeah, my friend is pretty casual and not into that so I'll save that one for solo play. I want all of these fucking games...wish I could buy Neo Geo Collection cart!

Turf Masters is legit great. Surprise hit for me - never played it when I had a Neo Geo back in the day.

"ON THE GREEEEN!"

I really love this game. I remember playing it on my school days, after leaving the school and always stooping to the way home to a solitaire bar with the arcade game. Great memories.

I already have the game on PC, but having it on a handheld is a very apealing idea.

I caved on Metal Slug 3. Even though I own the PS4/Vita version and have the Anthology PSP on Vita (which, eh, isn't fantastic imo) ... went for MG3 because I absolutely love the game as a button mashing stress reliever. It's some good ol' mindless fun + I think the Caravan mode is a nice addition. Completing short runs for high scores is perfect for small play sessions.

I guess the trade-off from the PS4/Vita version is you lose online co-op (that also is cross-play between PS4 and Vita) ... but gain more options, filters, Japanese/US versions + instant local co-op with two Joy-Con controllers.

Never played Turf Masters. Can't believe you guys are close to convincing me to get a golf game.

I've played small amounts of Shock Troopers with different coworkers so far. Not sure how these save interrupt states work. Are they supposed to be available after closing the game and coming back? Do I have to quit immediately after making them?

What the hell....In shock troopers, every time I try to do split Joy con 2 player the game freezes.

Any one have a remedy?

Did you set up the joy cons from the controller options menu before starting the game? Worked fine for me.

I never even heard of Shock Troopers before this but god damn is it a fun game. It's simple and dumb, but just has this great silly badass attitude that totally works for me.

Didn't hook my friend, sadly, but I'm looking forward to more.

Edit: Are the colors correct in Shock Troopers now? Still looks slightly dull.

I'm not into golf games but I think what Neo Turf Masters does so well is it has those systems down tight, but even better being structured like an arcade game wastes no time. I am sure there are plenty of golf games that go way deep like only sports "RPGs" can, but if you just want solid-ass arcade golfing that also isn't ridiculously wacky and over the top, it is the best.

Also works incredibly well with 2 player on joycons considering the analog sticks are perfectly fine for what you use them for.

Hail to the KING baby
I love Turf Masters (used to play it all the time on MAME, even online) but man is it making me realize how good a mainline Mario Golf title would be on Switch. Just so perfect for being able to transfer between TV and handheld because arcade-golf games are just titles you can "accidentally" wind up spending hours playing (Mario, Hot Shots).

Bad news bears. There is definitely additional scaling going on in TV mode, as suspected. Pulled directly from HDMI, not using screenshot feature.

Could you add a 132 @ 1080p for comparison? That's the closer to x4 round upscale (if the emulator indeed displays at 1080p).

Metal slug 3 is hard as fuck and that last level is borderline unfair. I say that as a huge fan.

"Borderline."

I used to say MS3 was my favorite in the series, but nowadays I think it's below 1, X, and 7. The bullet-sponge enemies are just too much. Even the standard soldiers can soak up a few rounds.

Awful -_-

Why do we always get shit like this for emulated games ? M2 is definitely the only good developer for this stuff.

No scaling, no filter, simply allow x3 or x4. How difficult can this be ?

I would be very disappointed not having a scan line option. Perfect upscale is mandatory on the other hand.

The nearest to good scaling there is the 133 option, since 100 is actually a x3 native res, is like in factors of 33.33~ % is how scaling works for this emulator when using 1080p

Which capture device did u use for the picture ? here I have my results from a Capture Card AverMedia Extreme U3 which sends a raw signal to my PC and a photo of how it really sees in my monitor, in which I get a solid scaling for the game with 133 @ 1080p
100 @ 1080p

Your pictures look fine actually. Could you try making some in 133 ratio with scanlines activated (no filter), so we can see if there is a pattern appearing ? Would be great.

Scanlines without filtering sadly isn't possible on these ACA games. At 133 scanlines look fine on my tv set, the only annoyance being some stripes of the screen being darker than others during white or red screen flashes (end of a match in kof98 for instance).

I also need to download Turf Masters. I've never played it but I love a good chill out golf game. Glad to hear such good impressions of it.

Spukc

always chasing the next thrill
One major YUCK with the controls in K.O.F 98
The pro controller has no deadzone. So selecting characters lineup before a match is glitchy as hell.
Some minor audio delays also.

Pretty poor also the manual of this game has a section of moves and just uses a b c d input.
Not even translated to the switch buttons.

No option for practice mode.
You want people to pay for your emulator/rom cause it is an overal better experience.

Right now. My nintendo classic mini or my new 3dsxl is better for playing kof 98😐

But having 2 player right out of the box is great.

sure but it actually uses some filter outside only scanlines, for A filter, B filter has a stripe of darkened area going up, just like when you record CRT footage on a video camera, and have 5 different strength of scanline, it does blur in both filters

here are A3 filter

and A5 filter

do you refer to B filter ? A filter does not add that dark stripe, is kind of emulating the effect of recording a CRT which I find funny but kind of useless anyways

No it's something else, as if in some stripes of the display the scanlines were thinner than in others. I can only see it on screen flashes. It's different from unevenly upscaled scanlines. Maybe it's just me. ^^

I've settled for the 133 ratio when playing on my 1080pb display with A3 filtering. It's not as clean as I'd like it to be but it's fine enough I guess.

So apparently I hadn't set up the joycons properly in the menu, but it's still weird that it would cause the game to freeze. WTF Hamster...
Once I had it set up properly it worked like a charm, but the freezing still persisted if I didn't go into the controller menu prior to launching the game.

Nice. Will check it out when I am more awake. Funny story, I thought there might be a ratio that made sense at 1080 but the process of capturing took hours after I thought I broke my dock by trying to use a different ac plug. So I was long past stepping and mathing and figuring it out by the end.

I'm using the El Gato HD60 which even though it's software is kind of shit for this specific purpose (you can't force full screen preview all the time as far as I can tell. It is infuriating.) Fortunately the screenshot feature in it dumps the native frame so works out in the end. Just more steps to get in and get a good look so takes longer than it should.

Look at the blue pixels particularly on the right side of the face/cheek.* There is tons of sub pixel noise. I assumed this was due to doubled up scaling but as pointed out above may not be the case.

*Might be harder to see if on mobile.
