The atmosphere in this game is something else, I think this has the best implementation of the Volumetric fog with light Shafts.

I agree with your negatives and i have fewer positives. Very overrated.
If it isn't for you, it isn't for you. Overrated is a term employed by people who have too high an opinion of their own opinions. Instead of accepting that your subjective tastes are preventing you, personally, from enjoying what HZD offers you're instead insinuating everyone else is simply faking their enjoyment of the game.

It's silly and arrogant. Stop being a Hanzo main.

This OT is some of the most positive OT I have seen this gen. if there are 100 posts, 90 are positive, 10 are mixed to negative. Saying this is Overrated is really a foolish thought.

Thats ironic considering this is one of the most arrogant posts ive read in a while. Heard of projection?

The game does nothing new, its not surprising there are people who think its overrated.

There it is again. It's fine that people think the game is over rated. This bolded is such a shit criticism though.

Neither do a lot of the most highly regarded games and movies of all time. It's a pretty weak criticism without more substance to back it up.

There was a bit after the proving where i thought it did nothing new and almost stopped playing. However i came back to it and i am glad i did because i ended up loving the game and realise while it most definitely does take many ideas from other games i absolutely does new things to make it unique

- a post apocalyptic story that is pretty unique
- hunting robot dinosaurs / animals with destructable parts that you can also control if you choose using primitive style weaponry.
- plenty of new things visually. It looks amazing
- open world of this visual quality with some really good combat.

Its easy to say those arnt new as you can see them as a merging of other things to create something new but that can be said about almost anything.

I cant think of a game that feels like horizon once you get past the heavy far cry influence at the begining.

What's everyone's favourite robot beast? I think the Snapmaw is mine, I love them. I'm a big fan of crocodiles and these nail the movement. Those jaws! Love the leap attack, tail spin, the ranged freeze bombs and the way they sneak about in water.

Yeah, my first sighting of a snapmaw was awesome. Laid my traps and that sucker makes a huge jump and kills me instantly - together with the first encounter my favourite.

Stalkers. They never get easy and the design and AI of this sleek murder machine is amazing.

Speaking of AI, there has been a lot of criticism of bandit AI but I think with decent AI the human opponents would murder Aloy way too easily. Humans are so much smaller targets then machines that making them not dumb as rocks means reducing their numbers massively or making their attacks pathetic to keep it fun.

There is a huge difference between stating "I don't think this is a good game", which is totally fine, and slighting the opinions of others who enjoy a thing you did not by accusing them of misrepresenting their experiences. The latter is really insulting.

You're free to point out what you find arrogant about my post and how you think I'm projecting, Freeman. You're also invited to explain how novelty and "doing something new" is a necessary requirement for a video game to be 1) considered good and 2) enjoyed by many. I would also appreciate you citing where novelty is even being credited as a groundbreaking aspect of the game. I love Horizon to pieces, and I don't think it does anything at all particularly new. It just does a lot of things really, really well.

Like any thread on any video game in this forum, there are plenty of posts in this topic by people who were disappointed by HZD in some fashion. I don't feel the need to reply to them, because everyone is entitled to their opinion and HZD is not my game. I'm not GG and this isn't a product I need to defend or feel it even has to be. The game speaks for itself, I think. But when someone waltzes into the topic and declares that my thoughts on the game are either inaccurate or dishonest, then we're not talking about the game anymore.

So yeah, I find "overrated" is a term employed by people who don't grasp the inherent subjectivity of opinions while attempting to validate their own. It's a stupid word.

"Overrated" = anything you don't like

Anyway, I'm 45 hours in and still loving it. The Rattler is crazy fun as I've said.

When you find you're running out of resources, consider changing your play style instead of farming.

You can save a lot of wire by using the Tearblast shotgun instead of arrows. Or use traps instead of tripwire. Or try freezing enemies instead of setting them on fire, or use shock and melee crits instead.

On a side note, anyone else getting a stupidly large amount of resources from Harvester arrows? I get like 6 Blaze per canister when using it on Grazers.

Stalkers. They always present a risk and their cloaking presents a unique trait that separates them from other enemies. One of my most tense moments in HZD was fighting two cloaked stalkers with little ammo and health only to discover that there was a third in the vicinity as well. I love that their gun gives little room for error in dodging and I wish they weren't quite as easy to forcibly decloak.

The game could seriously do with a NG+ and a difficulty a notch or two above VH. HZD's combat is tight enough that it rivals traditional action titles and would pair well with giving players the sort of challenge found in Souls games. As amazing as Thunderjaws are, they fell out of favor with me once it became a little trivial to kill them.

A cloaked Thunderjaw would be cool...

Yeah I find Stalkers were extremely vulnerable to shock. You can permastun them and kill them with melee crits, which feels more like an exploit than a strategy. There needs to be an invulnerability window added to let them get away and start their hunting cycle again (which is the most fun part of their gameplay).

I finished the game yesterday, after 50 hours of playing, which is quite remarkable since i had never played an RPG before and very few open world games. There was something there that kept me coming back until the end credits rolled over the screen. It's clear that a lot of hard work and passion went into this polished end product. I had fun playing for the most part and imagine going back in the future to clean up some side quests.

The weakest point for me was the dialogue and the characters. Towards the end, i felt it went into cringe territory quite a few times. Also, a lot of Aloy's lines and the way they were brought felt forced and without any "real" emotions. Same goes for most of the NPC's.

To be honest, at the first point of no return, i started to care less and less about the story up to a point where just wanted the whole story thing to end. The mystery of the world and the characters in the first half of the game felt a lot more interesting than the actual reveal, which did little to me. The developers should have kept feeding the story in small amounts throughout the open world instead of stuffing everything in the last chapters.

There's lot to talk about (both positive and negative) but in the end, i had fun with Horizon Zero Dawn. As a first game from a new IP, it has potential and i would certainly consider buying any sort of sequel.

Give me a 10 hour expansion that goes more in depth about some of the other
GAIA modules
or let me play E

. I'd drop my money in a heartbeat, now matter how much they charge for it.

Even though I have to work in a few hours I stayed up all night to finish the main quest at Sunfall and then Heart of The Nora. Amazing and really satisfying. Aloy's
little speech after everyone started calling her the anointed
was so good.

I'm going to go with Shellwalkers. Some of my most tense moments have been against a convoy that I riled up. I love that they're so unassuming, but if you manage to piss off a few of them at once, they become super intimidating, fast.

just finished...was gonna try for the platinum but popping the last few trophies was just way too tedious if you missed stuff during your play though. felt like an assassins creed game at that point.

- collect 30 flowers
- destroy 23 dummies
- kill myself lol

That isn't that bad as they are in clumps across what is really just 10 locations.

The 23 dummies one is still the rarest if you're into Trophies stats, pretty understandable. Still, not the most annoying collectibles trophy ever.

Watcher - Their simple and sleek design just leaves an impression on you and I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that Guerrilla worked very long on its design. I also find it really cute and just killing it in stealth almost makes me feel bad for them.

Sawtooth - I love the big, fast king of the jungle vibe I get from this machine. I was debating if I should put the Ravager over it in the list, but Sawtooth's design just feels better without that big, ugly pew pew cannon on its head.

Stormbird - Oh god! I love this machine. Please Guerrila, please give me a Stormbird statue. I want it! I NEED IT! Big bad shock-bomb flinging, Queen of the skies. Stormbird might be my favourite machine design in any game ever.

I'm debating whether Snapmaw or Thunderjaw...

Sawtooth with its walking sound is great as well.

I find myself really conflicted on this game, probably about halfway in I suppose. It's weird to read the nearly perfect "masterpiece" level praise in this thread because I feel like this game has such highs and lows.

The presentation feels all over the place. At times it's top notch and at others the animations, voice acting, overall sound design are sloppy and subpar. Aloy is definitely great while some npcs and quest givers are emotionless or are overacting. The repetitive quips from enemies and npcs in some fights stands out for sure.

The world is incredibly well built and atmospheric, but the cities are lifeless and static, npcs don't wander the streets and merchants are nothing more than a menu prompt. One such example is after a certain explosive event happens in the city and guards come running over, yet a quest giver is still in the same spot yelling the same stuff he'd normally do.

Combat is amazing when it comes to the machines and how you need to exploit their weaknesses. But the human combat is really really bad and unsatisfying, and I feel like I'm spending way too much time doing that. Melee also stands out as really clunky and bad, although getting a heavy stun and critical can be great.

The story overall is compelling, but leaves a lot to be desired in the actual storytelling. Dumping huge parts of exposition in nonstop data and audio logs is not how to do this. I know we're supposed to be discovering ancient technology and history, but there should be a better way to pace this stuff out.

I also don't feel like so far there have been any hard choices to make. No tough story decisions, no difficult build choices in progression, it all feels like a more straightforward experience, for better or worse.

There are times here that I feel Horizon reaches the level of the Witcher, but so many of the little quirks really stand out. I want to continue because when I get to the stuff I like I love this game, the bad parts are definitely hard to ignore. It definitely stands above some of the more bland open world games out there, but I don't think as much a as some are giving it credit for, at least with how much I've played. I hope my opinion improves.

I feel this way too, I think it's because I played Horizon right after playing Nier: Automata.

Horizon feels super "check listy" for me but I'm still sticking with it. It's a nice game to relax with and the story is pretty good.

I agree with those nitpicks, but, in my opinon, the story is very well done. Yes, it's all about discovery but, personally, I was entertained throughout.

I would also not compare this to the Witcher. Horizon is a very focused game, it's world is just big enough, it's enemy variety just sufficient, it's quest just numerous to give a solid 50-60 hour experience. The world in Horizon is a vehicle for quests and story, by itself it's not particularly interesting to explore. GG focused on what it wanted to do best: dino combat, focused story and sacrificed "RPG" elements, such as extensive loot system, world exploration surprises.

To me, it was a huge plus, because I finished the Witcher with a hundred question marks left and it was daunting to think that I didn't see it all. And most of those question marks are yet another bandit camp or a bear, how exciting...

Human combat sucks though, such shame. This is the only thing that took me out of the experience, especially the brutes who just take you hitting them with a stick without bulging. End game spoiler:
That last mission boss fight against the Shadow Carja leader with a huge HP pool was riddiculous and annoying. How come my upgraded spear knocks over dinos in one hit, but only takes 3% off the dude's hp and he is still standing?

I'm still early in game but I'm hoping to encounter humans using stop signs as shields, Gamma World-style. Did Fallout ever do that? Wasteland?

My god, fighting alongside an overridden Stormbird must be one of the coolest things I've ever done in a video game.
Closely followed by watching two Rockbreakers going at the each other.

In my second playthrough I'm challenging myself by using only the hunter and war bows and melee. No tripwires, no ropes, no bombs and, especially, no tear arrows. Facing two Stalkers at the same time was a blast, edge of the seat affair of running, hiding, tracking non-stop. Exhilarating.

The game could seriously do with a NG+ and a difficulty a notch or two above VH. HZD's combat is tight enough that it rivals traditional action titles and would pair well with giving players the sort of challenge found in Souls games.

Seconded.

A cloaked Thunderjaw would be cool...

One thing I wish they'd done is environmental variants of each machine. A desert Thunderjaw with coolant exhausts that is pretty much impervious to overheating, another for colder regions that has heating elements and is unfreeze-able. That would make for more varied combat scenarios where you can't get completely reliant on a single way to defeat each machine.

This is actually a VERY cool idea for a sequel! And it makes a lot of sense too, each species of robots should be adaptive to their natural habitat.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

I'd like this and more legendary versions of the tougher machines alongside this idea. A super Thunderjaw that is all black, cloaks and has even more weapons than the normal versions

Finished this last night, as much as I've complained about parts of this game I've got to say the ending was PERFECT. I couldn't think of a better way to end it, it was really well done.

I have erased the post-credits bit from my memory.

Welp. I guess I just spoiled myself by checking out the list of weapons on the wiki. Dammit.

Saw something called "Sylens' Lance," so I'm assuming he'll die and I'll get it afterwards or something. At least that answers my question about the spear I saw some players have.

At least I know how to get the
Tearblaster
now.

You're wrong about what happens, don't worry.
not sure if you want to know my response, so I spoiler tagged it. Just saying whether or not you're right in very plain terms.

It became the Ravager cuz I kept finding one to conveniently override whenever I get into a big fight. I have a cherished memory of me and my Ravager bro taking on two corrupted Rockbreakers.

Stalker for sure. My most epic moments involved Stalkers chasing me through the jungle. Or setting up traps for them by planting explosives around their motion sensors, and setting the sensor off.

That would make it easier to take down, not more difficult. I'm playing on Hard on my first playthrough and you can basically tear off the already existing Disc Launchers safely, tie down the Thunderjaw and then wreck it in a minute flat if you know what you're doing. Legendary Thunderjaw doesn't need more weapons, it needs less. Or, make the weapons destructible but not tearable. I guess that would work, but unless they're smaller than his other giant weapons, it'll just give him more weaknesses.

Cloaking... I'm iffy on it, simply because a beast as big as that wouldn't make very effective use of it. Stalkers work because they're smaller and sleaker and you can easily miss their distorted cloaking field, but you won't miss the cloaking on a giant T-Rex, not with its heavy footfalls anyway.
