RUMOR: Evil Within 2 / Psycho Break 2 in production

Isn't Mikami's protege game designer directing this? I forgot her name. That's probably what the leak stating "Mikami is not involved" is about....I take that as possibly not in the directing role.

Anyways, I'm interested to see what this young up and coming director can do.

Mikami said that there are three Tango members he thinks could direct a game, Ikumi Nakamura, Shigenori Nishikawa (Madworld's director) and Naoki Katakai.

I think he chose Nakamura.

It's interesting that John Johanas's name wasn't thrown into the mix here, since he was the one who wrote/directed both Kidman DLCs.

But Nakamura dumped some concept art on Twitter for this game way back in 2015, so I doubt she's doing concept AND directing. She was also talking a bit later (maybe a full year later?) about how she didn't know how Joseph turned out as a character in the final iteration of the game (but hope he turned out okay! because he's her favorite), so if she wasn't aware of his full story/personality by that time, it's doubtful she's directing the sequel.

This may be a good place to ask, rather than reviving an old thread.

I watched "Super Best Friends Play" play The Evil Within, and was left less-than-impressed with the story of TEW. However, I have been told that SBFP didn't do a particuarly good job of finding the documents around the game, which fleshed out the story loads (Resident Evil 1 style).

Does anyone reccomend a particular lets play on youtube which covers all the story elements?

Matt and Pat missed a lot of shit, talked over a lot of shit, and went into that game with too many assumptions. This guy does a 100% story run. No commentary, but he gets every little thing in a playthrough that makes the hardest difficulty look like a joke. He also has the DLCs on his channel. Same deal.

Not YouTube, but there does exist a write-up of the game's plot on a Google Doc. I can link that, too, if by the end of the full story run of the base game and both The Assignment and The Consequence you still find yourself confused. You shouldn't, because the DLC is pretty damn clear, but. Offer's on the table.

It's not uncommon for a director to also be heavily involved in other aspect of development. Hashimoto from Platinum did the enemy designs and directed Bayonetta 2 for example.

Awesome! Thanks man. Can I have the Google Doc too for future reference?

I enjoyed The Evil Within despite its poor performance on PS4 (along with the black bars - I've finished it before the last patch). Definitely interested in a sequel.

Fuck Yes! I loved the Evil Within. I just felt the performance and "cinematic" black bars really crippled the game.

I hope they fix it in the sequel.

I hope the level design and technical performance is massively improved from the original (if it's really happening).

This.

The level design in TEW is such a disappointment, considering it's a feaking Mikami game...

Even RE5 had better level design imo, which is painful to say.

There is no real story in this game. I watched several YT videos trying to explain what happens and at the end of the day you still don't get the full picture. It's blatantly obvious that Tango just thought of a couple of cool Horror locations and then made up some stupid, loose, "in the head of a psycho" story to connect these...
The DLC does try to do some damage control here but it can't fix everything because of how broken the story foundation was.

Not a fan of the first game but i apprecciated some ideas and concept that Mikami put into it

Quite curious to see how this shapes up

Yes this is me. I always wanted to love the game, I really do some ideas and the design is freaking amazing. Very much lokking forward to this.

What is bad about level design in either?

It has a real story though. If it is well told or good is totally different subject though.

Yeah, what was bad about the level design? They were pretty good, and varied, I thought. The most I'd ask for is more open areas like chapter 3, chapter 7, and chapter 9.

I also thought the encounter design in the game was top notch, and level design definitely factors into that.

There's a 10-page Google Doc on this page in this thread detailing the entire plot, and you're really going to sit here and say that the game doesn't have a story?

From what i understand, Mikami wasn't really into making the game until about 2/3rds of the way through, so im holding out hope there will be more passion and fun in a sequel.

If this is true I'm glad it's happening, because we need more horror/survival horror games with decent budgets.

I'm just not a big Mikami fan.
I feel like he can get a nice spooky atmosphere right, but the stories and some gameplay decisions from practically every game he's had a firm hand in turn me off. Even his baby, Resident Evil, is a series where my favorite entries have little (or even no) involvement from him.

I'm happy for fans of Psycho Break/The Evil Within, though. It's always great being into a particular game and getting a sequel to said game that doesn't exactly set the world on fire financially. As I didn't enjoy actually playing TEW, I'll still look forward to watching some commentary-free Let's Plays of the next game. :)

Source for this? I hear this get thrown around from time to time, but I can't find anything to corroborate it. All of the official statements I can find from Mikami was that this was something he felt passionately about and was his decision to do.

I remember him saying that in some video interview. Might remember totally wrong though. There was also the polygon interview where he said "If I wanted to make horror games, why leave Capcom?", however, this doesn't mean that he wouldn't want to make TEW but I can see if someone took it that way.

I've been looking, and if such a video exists, I can't find it. Maybe this is one of those Berenstein/Berenstain Bears kind of moments.

From what I can tell, The Evil Within kind of came about because Mikami realized halfway through Project Zwei that the idea of a co-op vampire game was super dull, and he was a little depressed about the current state of survival horror, anyway. All he needed was a good shove to jump back in the fray with TEW.

I wouldn't be surprised if working on Shadows of the Damned was what made him really consider going back into horror again, to be honest. That game is severely underrated.

I have tried the game yesterday and did not like it at all. It is the first game I have disliked this much on PS4. I am not sure if I will force myself to finish it

With mere hours remaining during the sale, I'm still waffling on picking up the game even for such a cheap price as a result of the love it or hate it response toward it, bundled with everything or no. I've YouTubed parts of it before and am still doing some of that now, and while it can be entertaining to watch, I'm not convinced that it's something I should get instead of waiting for a game that I know I want to go on sale (which bothers me, as I've enjoyed most of Mikami's previous games, RE4 included). Not enthused about the stealth-oriented DLC either, yet it's also necessary to make sense of the story.

No point forcing yourself to play something that you really don't like..

This game was my goty when it came out though, amazing experience for me

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Just in time to purchase The Evil Within and all of it's expansions for just $8.99 via the PSN flash sale. Bring it on.

How far did you get?

I don't know about you guys but I was a big survival horror game fan until Resident Evil 7 and have my own critera for the games of this genre

Lack of bullets is one and supernatural is another thing I hate in this kind of games. It does not look hopeful at all. At least if the stealth worked I might enjoy it

"Evil Within" sounds like a title of a cheesy Linkin Park song. They should have kept "Psycho Break" for all regions.

Evil Within goes better with the endgame reveal about the main antag, even if I agree that it sounds cheesy as fuck.

Chapter 1 and 2 are worst chapters in the game. I would suggest to power through couple of more chapters as it gets much better at ch.3 already.

I would say 2 is fine. It's a tutorial chapter and serves that purpose well. Also, I had a really great experience with one optional part of that chapter.

But I agree with chapter one though. It should have been cut entirely. My friend and I joked that TEW was a great game, sandwiched by two awful parts. Chapter one and the final boss fight. Also is it funny to anyone else that RE7 has
a similarly terrible final boss fight? What is the deal with these horror games not understanding how to have a proper "horror" climax. There's nothing scary or fun about shooting an amorphous blob in some high-octane, Michael Bay scenario.

Other chapters that really dragged on the experience for me were 11 and 12.

Psycho Break literally describes the exact plot of the game.
Instead of a prison break, it's a Psycho Break. Ruvik is getting the hell out of Beacon Mental Hospital's brain prison.

Have you played Alien: Isolation? If not, you're missing the best "without bullets" survival game.

I dont think you quite grasp the definition of a survival horror genre. Lack of ammo and the supernatural are what make a survival horror game. Besides, I never had any issues with the lack of ammo. If you play it smart, you will be in the opposite of lacking. Game is great, I initially hated it but the more I played the more I enjoyed and I even ended up replaying it. I'm even going to go ahead and say its better than RE7 for me.

Clock Tower 3 is what cames to my mind when I think about without bulltes game and I have not played Alien Isolation

I hope to keep on playing on liking it at the end. Supernatural is NOT necessary for survival horror
