Games you remember, names you don't

I vaguely remember like an top-down arena game where mechincal animals fought each other. This was on the PS1, on a demo disc alongside Mr Domino or Devil Dice or some shit

There was a Microsoft PC game about... fighting bugs with jetpacks?

All I had was the demo from a magazine, which let you play CTF online. And it was awesome.

The only thing I really remember is what it said when you started multiplayer games:

"FREE FOR ALL: If it moves, shoot it. If it shoots back, Dodge."

This is a long shot but I used to play this PC game in kindergarten (around '94 or '95) that was a platformer. I don't know what type of PC but it was in color. It may have been the same machines that ran Number Muncher and Secret Island of Dr. Quandary.
You were a little boy (blonde?) and you collected items until you maybe had enough to get to the next stage. One of the levels (perhaps the first) was set in a castle of some kind.

Any guesses?

Word Rescue?

There used to be this 2 player arcade game that I believe was made by sega.

It was an underwater scuba diver on rails shooter.
The graphics were in 3d (polygons)

The bosses were mythical creatures like a giant squid, a shark, and a bunch of other super sized monsters.

I believe the earliest I've played it was back in 1999
The arcade cabinet had seats with a back tinted window and a roof.

The controls were basically dual triggers that simulated one of those mini submarine motors that you can drive underwater.

I haven't the foggiest idea what the name was.
Any ideas?

I'm looking for a horizontal shooter that I played around 2001, I think it was on a Neo-Geo MVS system.

It had kind of a primitive, pre rendered intro of a fighter jet taking off a flying base in the sky. It had a heavy blue tint.

I think the game used scaling effects, for example over a desert where the ground would warp as if the plane flew at a different angle.

Blazing Star has a few instances where the background appears as if you're flying at a different angle.
No scaling or anything fancy involved though, simply a backdrop drawn from a top down view and gradually warping..uh, watch the video i guess
https://youtu.be/kdiZP-6TmOs

Not sure about the blue tint though, that made me think of Zed Blade

I had some motorcycle racing game for the Genesis as a kid; it played like Pole Position, you just drove down a parallax road and dodged cars and animals and stuff.
I remember you could collide with hyenas or cows or something on the road, and if you did, their sprites would burst through them and leave their bloodied/disemboweled corpses behind. That really upset me at the time.
It wasn't very good.

I played an arcade game as a kid, probably around 90-93. It was a shoot-em-up, can't remember if it was vertical or side-scrolling (might have alternated, now that I think about it).

I remember the color scheme using lots of orange and bronze. I think you piloted some kind of mecha or robot that could transform. The art style could very well be anime inspired.

The game featured some pretty primitive cut scenes that I was very impressed by at the time. I think it was mainly still imagery with some effects overlayed.

Those aren't it sadly. I'm sure it was strictly vertical scrolling.

I think it went for a somewhat photorealistic look. It was one of those shmups wich use a pretty standart looking jet-fighter.

Ok, I only saw the trailer for this game last year, so I don't know if it's out already or still has to come out.
The style of the game looked very clean and mostly used white colors (and direct contrasting colors such as black). The view of the game looked similar to the Lara Croft/Hitman/Deus Ex GO games. I think it was an adventure/puzzle game with thriller elements and it took place in some sort of research facility or a power plant. It involved terminals or nodes if I recall correctly.

Great thread! Google has never helped me find these games, but...

1. Commodore 64
2. I think there were two games, very similar, made by same team. possibly prequel-sequel.
3. Fantasy RPG, mostly text based with basic sprites.
4. You'd choose a direction from left, right, or straight, and each choice would bring up a new location. At the new screen, you could either get treasure, nothing, wolves or something worse.
5. I seem to remember both were known as fantastic games.
6. Wolves seemed to eat me a lot.

I think most of the above is accurate. Anyone?

Sounds like Lords of Midnight/Doomdark's Revenge.

oh.

because you said horizontal in your first post :p
;)

You sure it was NeoGeo ? because there's not too many, besides Strikers 1945, Sonic Wings 2/3 and Ghost Pilots, neither of which feature scaling or anything fancy (something in Strikers 1945 maybe)

Scaling and perspective changing makes me think of Taito F3 games.
Gridseeker ?

Could be Macross. There's 2 Macross arcade games from 1992 and 1993, vertical and horizontal scrolling respectively.
Both feature anime cutscenes.

Those, or Hyper Duel ?
Cybattler ?
Heavy Unit ?

Temple of Apshai or Gateway to Apshai?

Hmm... this is probably wrong, but what about Redline? It's part post-apocalyptic arena car combat, part FPS. And it did have a demo on PCG US's May '99 issue. (On that note, what years are you thinking the disc is from, any idea?)

Nope not that game unfortunately, appreciate the help though! I also hardly ever login so my apologies for the extremely late reply :p

If I had to guess, it would be between '97-99, but I have no way of knowing for sure as I was a kid when I played all of the PCG demo disks. If I could remember what the sleeve art was it would make it a ton easier to figure out what the game was!

EDIT: Just found it!! It was called DeathDrome; finally found it!

This one has bugged me for years, maybe you guys can help.
Going off memories from like damn near 20 years ago, but lets see.

1. PS1
2. Space shoot-em-up with 3d graphics
3. Game play was a mix of side scrolling and some sections where the camera was behind the ship. (I remember the controls being inverted here, always messed me up as a kid)
4. I remember it being kinda gritty, the first level you fought through a destroyed ship.

That's all I got, I remember liking it as a kid and kinda want to try and emulate it.

Any takers?

Not Colony Wars, is it? I'm on my mobile.

Or is it a side scroller type game?

Project Igi jumped in to my head there but I honestly can't remember how much destruction there was.

Red Faction?

I have three PS1 games that I remember playing way back in the day but I can't remember the names

A cycling game (real world, I'm pretty sure)
A rally game (I think I did a New Zealand rally stage on it)
Another racer (I think??) I remember a jungle level vividly, i think it was P2P. This one is definitely the most vague

EDIT: Nvm, found the third one. Turns out it was 1Xtreme

Project I.G.I never had that much destruction. At least not on the scale of building destruction.

But for building destruction wouldn't Red Faction 2 be more likely?

There was this game from probably 30 years ago. I remember it being in arcades, on pc, and consoles. You played as this blue-collar everyman who went through a dimensional portal where he was met with tons of horrifying monsters. It had this weird Lewis Carroll feel to it, cribbing a lot of his ideas almost exactly.

I wonder if this is a half-memory of Weird Dreams. It's not *quite* right, in terms of the description, but it's got a bit of a (macabre!) Lewis Carroll feel and very distinctive monsters.

Things it wasn't:
In arcades or on consoles.
You aren't strictly speaking a blue-collar everyman going through a portal - you're on an operating table under anaesthetic (hence the 'dreams' part). Also, there's a demon involved.

HOWEVER

UK kids' TV series Motormouth used footage of Weird Dreams as the backdrop to a phone-in-quiz thing (answer wrong, your character goes through a 'die' sequence; do it correctly, they go through a 'continue' sequence), which papered over a lot of the more extreme parts of the storyline, and shifted the context through to the hub world of the main game (being a fairground with multiple portals in a hall of mirrors). If you're British - or if other countries also adopted that use of the footage - It's conceivable that influenced what you recall of it.

I'm in the US, and I just looked up this game. It's not that. I specifically remember playing this game in arcades and on consoles, and seeing a friend play it on DOS. Thanks anyway, though.

Got a genre for it?

The thing that's intriguing me is '30 years ago' combined with 'arcades' and 'DOS'. There's really not much where all those three things are true, because PCs weren't generally ground zero for arcade-style games in those days (Wing Commander was often hailed as the first huge *action* hit on PC)

I recall a ps1 game that is top down perspective. You control a tank or mech like vehicle and fight other vehicles, mechs, & soldiers while on missions. I don't remember it vividly enough but I want to say it had defcon in the title or somewhere in the game. But I honestly can't find anything that matches up with my description along with that possible word in the title. Sometimes I wonder if it was just a dream I had.

Wargames: Defcon 1? I haven't played it in a long time but it sounds like it's pretty similar.

uhm...
It wasn't on consoles or PC (although it did look like a game that would be better suited for home).
Other than that, it sounds like
Biomechanical Toy

?

PC wasn't really there 30 years ago, except for a few HUGE arcade ports like SF2, Strider etc.
Maybe you're thinking home computers like Amiga, but even then it would have to be a very popular coin op for it to have ports on home computers and consoles and your description doesn't ring any other arcade bell to me.

There were titles that closely resembled Biomechanical Toy, though.
The same (Spanish iirc) developers worked on a little action platformer called Risky Woods (Amiga, Sega Genesis) that looked a lot like it and even reused some of the same sprites.

No, the graphics were far more basic then that. I'd describe them as 8-bit. It was a 2 button and joystick game. It had super catchy music, as well. Nothing too in depth, but it had a great loop to it.

Also, the character could grow or shrink.

This is a web browser flash game you played as a dark pixelated character climbing a dark tower with insanely good music. It's 5+ years old. Can't find it because every google search leads me to Role Playing board games or the Stephen King book series...

Was it possibly Escape?

There was this demo that I would always on my old computer as a little kid. I can barely remember it but I think it had kind of a top down view but not completely top down. I think I controlled either 1 or a group of units. It had some sort of fantasy medieval theme.

The file icon was a wooden castle door I think.

I've been trying to find out what game it is to this day.

Unless it's Super Mario Bros ( :p ) I have no idea.
Short recap:

Side scroller platformer
Arcade, Consoles and Home Computers versions exist.
Main character is a blue collar everyman who goes through a portal and finds himself in some weird parallel world with monsters seemingly out of a Lewis Carrol novel.
Main character can shrink and grow
8 bit graphics, 2 buttons gameplay
Circa 1986/1992 ?

If the bolded is true there's no way I could have missed this game.
But can't think of anything..
