Lego City Undercover Switch cover mentions 13GB download [Up3: Full game on card]

Switch supports hardware texture compression, possibly all of the largest assets have been massively compressed in switch version.

What are you talking about? ALL modern hardware since 2001 supports texture compression. Even.the gamecube and Wii. Some supports more and better formats than others tho.

I have been thinking about this issue yesterday and there is actually one feasible solution they might have used: put the best LOD for models and textures on the patch. In this way people can still play the game (albeit in lower asset quality) without the patch, and experience the best image quality with the patch.

Another statement

Players who purchase LEGO City: Undercover on Nintendo Switch at retail do not need to download the game to play. All players who purchase the game can download the small content update patch with an internet connection.

This is really just WB being greedy af and maximizing profit margins as much as they can. It's not the first time either. Remember Arkham Knight's PC port? They outsourced the task of the PC port to an inexperienced small studio that mainly made mobile games, and then gave them an impossible time frame to do it.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.

That's not much better, but "content update" strongly suggests that the cartridge doesn't contain all of the game data given the game in question is a last-gen port and there's been no indication that the Switch version will have any exclusive content aside from the Nintendo nods, which will presumably be absent from the other versions.

I can't imagine that they would say it was small if it was actually 13GB, so perhaps the misprint theory has more merit now.

Mind you, 1.3GB wouldn't be great, but at least that's small enough to get wrapped up in a timely fashion.

1.3GB would be understandable imo since it just barely spills the game over 8GB and it would feel like a waste from WB's point of view to pay more for 16GB carts.

Switch has hardware support for better video compression though and there's a lot of video cut scenes

I am aware of that, yes (along with BC5 and BC7 texture compression which you cant find on PS3/360. it provides much better quality compared to DXT1/DXT5). But that is not what the person I quote is saying.

I imagine the size on the eShop is not fill in the blank... just a guess, but I expect that's auto-populated from the game package itself on the shop, same as when you bought anything on the 3DS and it told you how many blocks it would use.

Also, saying "the game doesn't need to be downloaded to play it" is a pretty direct answer for a normal person who doesn't cling on every detail, but I know, the image makes little sense, which is true either way tbh.
But what if the eShop download is only 8GB, and they are expecting a 13GB patch on day one? It's unlikely, but possible.

WB's statement to IGN, posted above, does point to that being the case. It begins by addressing players of the retail version specifically and ends with "All players who purchase the game can download the small content update ..." (emphasis mine).

That article is why I'm placing my bets on it being a misprint. That and:
- 7.2gb digital+13gb extra would put the game above the total Xbox One size
- Traveller's Tales are still making their games for X360, they know how to optimise things
- Both Nintendo and WB aren't complete idiots, they know letting a kid's game release with a 13gb mandatory update is a bad idea

Shame they have to put "can download..." makes me wonder if it's optional or not, they could have just said "are required to download..."

So, I dunno if this has been mentioned at all, but I stopped by a TRU today and they have a Lego City reservation card out:

Now, the notable thing here is Prison Island where "new adventures await". In the original game there was a Albatross Island which was a prison, but this sounds like a whole new thing. Its not clear though if this is a TRU exclusive or the game at TRU has the little minifig and set build with it or something.

I'd wager the intended implication is that the game is playable without the patch but it's required to access all of the content. The situation is definitely lacking a healthy dose of clarification, though. Questions of a technical nature really ought to be run by the development team.

Edit: Of course the game is a week away but still has no Steam Store page. WB always treats the PC releases of Lego games as red-headed stepchildren for some reason.

All of these statements are dancing around the truth, like a stripper on a pole.

Within one sentence, WB could easily lay out the size of the patch, what it is, whether it is a mandatory download, and if what's on the box is accurate.

My own hot take, is that I can't help but to feel like they are stalling.

They also say that's a helicopter when it's clearly a plane

Prison Island is a current Lego set. I'm pretty sure it's unrelated to the game, just a cross promotional thing for Toys R Us to push Lego sales.

So all this was over a typo? smh

"Small" doesn't necessarily mean the patch isn't 13GB. WB isn't going to admit that the size is unreasonably high, so it could just be a poor word choice (I would have gone with "modest").

Sounds quite different from what people are discussing on these last few pages. Is this an older statement at this point? Or did it just happen? I dunno when IGN updated it

That's a new update. I'm still a little suspicious, though, as it's at odds with the update that it replaced. Either there's a "content update" or there isn't. If Eurogamer's article is updated similarly, however, then we can safely assume that WB's PR department finally got its duck in a row and the information is accurate.

That sounds like a much more descriptive and useful update than the previous ones. Hopefully this was all just some weird packaging error. I still think $60 is too high for a few year old game but at least now I'll keep an eye on it.

The picture I posted earlier clocked the download at 8.3GB. I figured the cart is 7GB with 1.3GB (and not 13GB as the additional as originally thought) download if I'm not mistaken. My guess is that boxart shown earlier in the thread was a misprint.

So either people only get the initial open area or I wonder if they only get the missions and the open world is what you have to dL.

Ah, right. That does align with IGN's most recent update.

Hopefully someone who gets this game early doesn't download and can confirm with us what that download is needed for exactly

Good to know. If it's really as simple as that update makes it out to be then I don't get how they worded the previous ones the way they did though. So yeah, I'm a bit skeptical for now.

Just gives us the hard numbers and explain to us exactly what the update does. It's not that hard.

That doesn't really jive with the Wii U version's large filesize, though.

Full WB statement:

We'll see.

Maybe WB simply doesn't care about GAF overreacting about some vague thing.

This has been one helluva roller coaster.

That being said I don't blame a lot of people for being on edge and waiting for the reviews of what was actually meant by 13GB on the package
