Snake Pass |OT| Snake Had A Hard Life

I'm struggling HARD on the controls. I think I'll watch that video explaining the controls later, it's really making me not like the game.

My best advice for those struggling with the play controls, just keep playing around in the first world and practice, practice, practice! Took me a little bit to get used to but now I'm doing much better controlling Noodles.

Has Sumo mentioned anything about Switch sales numbers or is that something only Nintendo will release? I hope it's doing well for them. Successful indie games on the Switch are important for us as owners, along with *well done* third party entries.

I imagine it's way too early to be talking sales numbers, especially with the number of platforms it has released on. Generally speaking, though, sales for digital titles aren't discussed publicly, outside of peaking into SteamSpy to see how it's done on that platform.

Wish a dev was here on GAF.
There's at least one SUMO dev on GAF. I guess they might make it along here at some point?

Nah, I don't have the patience for this. Grip doesn't help and the snake (head) is often doing the exact opposite what I wanna do. It's a very frustrating experience. I feel like wasting my time with this (actually great) game.
...
That's the problem. I'm not. I don't even know how this works. I'm always failing immediately (yes, even with grip).

Omg I did it!!!

This is not a calming game, no it's not, lol.

The users who helped me were right. You have to use the grip-button. You can even slowly move forward while using grip so it's actually easier than it seems to be.

Okay, now I really "got" the controls. Feels amazing now.
Really great to read your progression! Congrats.

I agree that the camera needs some work though.

I'm on the fence.... 20 is a no brainer price... How are the controls really on switch?
If you're OK with them being different, and requiring learning, then they're good.

Played the first couple of levels, it's definitely unique, I dig it. I can already tell I'm gonna be squeezing the controller hard being like "get your ass on the poles Noodle!"

I don't think this game is for me. It's more frustrating than relaxing. Too much fiddling that makes me crave for a Mario game, a platformer where you have better control of your character.

I think the devs have made a point of mentioning this is more puzzle game than platformer, it does however have the look of a platformer

Missed one blue orb in the 6th level. I have no idea where it is and it's the first one I'm missing. Guess I'll have to move on to level 7 for now. Besides the sometimes jerky camera, this is a real treat to play!

Loving this so far. Quick question that might be spoilerish:

Does anyone know what the tiki-style evil looking statues do? I just completed the first world, and upon hitting the statues I've heard a noise for each level. When I completed the levels, one of them popped up and gave me something, a spinning token? I missed the beginning of the cutscene and don't see anything in my menus.

just replayed that level to find the orb i missed because I did the same so maybe its the same one i missed. theres some
really easy to miss one in the water tunnel with the pillars midway through the level. One is on the bottom hidden by the various pillars and the other is on a ledge thats easy to miss if youre not swimming on the surface. I totally missed the second one my first time through but I think someone who found it first might do the opposite and miss the other one

They either just get you an achievement or they unlock the second spoiler below since I can't remember exactly when I unlocked it.

Also a spoiler:

For beating the game you unlock
an 8bit costume for Noodle
For getting all the collectibles
the 8bit costume for Doodle.

Also for anyone struggling to hunt down all the collectibles, when you get to
the end of the game
you
get a mode to let you see all collectibles.

I've gotta replay the levels without dying, and figure out what exactly the The Floor is Molten Rock requires, then platinum is mine.

For anyone struggling with the controls, like others have said, grip is key, but it's useless if the snake isn't tightly wrapped around the bamboo. To keep Noodle tight, constantly hold grip. I usually hold both grip and slither, and release grip when I want to move. Make sure you keep minimal slack from your point of contact to the head and don't be afraid to just slowly coil around the same beam multiple times. Don't go very far without having a tight coil and don't go very long without the grip button held.

Thanks! One follow up question:

Do they show up when you bump into all of the statues in a world? Because I didn't get all of the coins in the first world, I was missing one at the time.

The collectibles that they give you at the end of the levels are just the things you get when you finish each realm. They aren't tied to hitting the statues.

Well this game gets frustrating fast. I'm at level 4 (or is it 5? The game should really display that info on the pause screen) and I'm struggling to get anywhere near the the yellow jewel. Guess I'll be going back to Zelda for now.

That's exactly the same part where I was about to give up. Use the grip button. You can move forward while pressing it. Move slowly.

Just tried the game on PS4 Pro and kept getting random hitches in the first couple levels. I'm on a 1080p display. Anybody else having this problem?

Do you have it set to the correct one on the video setting in snake pass options? I assume you cant change it but just in case.

I'm using a 4k tv and had the hitches problem, i'm in 1080p mode for thisg ame for the 60fps.

Yeah I don't have any options to change that, probably since I'm on a 1080p display. You haven't had any hitching issues?

Having really big problems with the controls. The button layout and responsiveness is alright, but I am struggling to get over the fact that all stick movement is relative to the camera. I'm constantly catching myself using it as if I was controlling from the snake's point of view (tank control style). :(

Yep, this is my biggest issue with the game. If you have an accelerate button, surely movement should be relative to your current direction...

So that 7% completion for the first level didn't actually count coins. I just finally read the instructions properly and managed to swap the buttons on my vita without it hard crashing. Now I can have forward movement on the physical right trigger and grip on left. Kinda reminded me of loco roco on psp, but with awesome visuals. Sat in bed to try and play it properly and found the last two coins for the first level. 2 hours in :p

I went for the bridge first since everyone started talking about it and took quite I while but I think I fluked it.
Then had a good look around till I backtracked to the start, which after dying a few times noticed that it's cool how in the beginning there is actually straight away 3 paths to take, each to a coin or to the rest of the level with an arrow pointing to that and a tree separating the two hidden paths right in your starting camera frame.

Anyway. That took a damn long time for me to do lol.

Think I've got the hang of it, You've got a certain weight to your head, and past a certain point of dropping you won't be able to get back up without a good speed and enough tail gripping something.

Thing is if you stop concentrating, for just a second while moving, say by premature celebration when you're nearly back, then bound to slip up.

Was so happy on the way back, the snake's colours look awesome when you're stoned. I was just dancing to the music, happily slithering in the grass on my way back to the space station.

10/10

I think they think you have enough to worry about and sometimes that you can't see which way you're headed.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that this game would make a lot more sense with tank controls...

I mean it just seems obvious to me, considering how all of the stick movement in this game is about rotating. I'm at a loss as to how the developers did not think of that.

Consider this hypothetical control scheme:
- If you press the stick left or right gently, Noodle rotates at a wide angle
- If you press the stick all the way, Noodle rotates more tightly

I think that would work great.

I think its tacky to go "the devs are wrong" and obviously you cant jump which disqualifies it from a lot of peoples definition of platformer, but imo its more than just the look. I dont really feel like im solving puzzles in this game and its got a lot of the same design sensiblities as a platformer despite featuring a different moveset. Id much sooner recommend this to a person who liked Crash or Banjo than I would someone who liked third person puzzlers like Ico or Rain.

Its at the very least platformer-adjacent even if it doesnt quite fit most peoples definition of a game where you jump on stuff.

It's definitely a platformer. You just aren't jumping, you're snaking.

Really innovative to go all out like this tbh. I feel like I understand what it feels like to move as a snake! It's almost a physics-based snake platforming sssssim.

totally agree with this. it's a game where you have to master the movement mechanics and overcome obstacles and complete challenges.

Geez the rumble is way too strong on switch. Hands are numb. Have to take a break.

It's weird to me the head movement is tied to the camera axis. I would have made it oriented to the snake. Maybe it would get to crazy when you really get twisted up.

Its a bug apparently, getting a patch soon

Man, I suck at this game... How do I reach the yellow key stone in stage 2-1? It's way up high, and I don't see anything I can slither up/around to reach it.

Turn your camera 180 degrees and there's an higher platform on the other side too. You can go round the side and then to the back and there's some bamboo poles you can climb on on to get to the top. There's a switch at the top which lifts the other side up so you can swim underneath.

Considering it seems sub res on everything, I'm not holding my breath. :p

Would be nice if it was fixed though!
Plus, to be frank, a lot of devs don't even see/understand tech stuff like framerste, resolution, IQ etc past the very obvious stuff.

I once heard someone call clipping "pop-in", he doubled down on it too.

PC to Vita (moonlight+henkaku). Using R trigger to move forward and L trigger to grip.

The game rules btw. Really challenging but fun snake platforming with nice atmosphere. Great price on steam £16.

Okay, just got the game on Switch and I am loving it.

However, I had to laugh because in level one Doodle says "We have to find the missing Keystone" then he flys over to the missing Keystone. Then you slither your way over to the Keystone and Doodle says "I'll take the Keystone." and I'm thinking what the hell is Noodle even doing?

Doodle can fly, collect the keystones, and activate the gates. I think Doodle just likes to see Noodle suffer.

To much fun, though.

Eh that is not a developer that's a sales guy.

It doesn't really matter all that much. Between him and the official twitter guy, it said they were looking at it. I don't see why he'd bother commenting if he wasn't in the know. Just shared the tweets though, could very well be nothing. Take it with a grain of salt for sure.

I just don't buy The resolution is a "bug" effecting only certain switch units. Classic sales guy BS. does anyone have a switch that runs it at native res? Does the sales guy even know the native res of the switch?

They may optimize the game further and get it running better but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

They should be able to easily patch the rumble strength. Crossing my fingers they implement some actual HD rumble features (but again not holding breath) being able to feel the difrent surfaces you slither over would be awesome.

With the latency there, I just don't know how anyone plays anything remote play beyond turn-based strategy titles.

There is no noticeable latency and I'm playing at 60fps, using the same thing Nvidia's Shield uses, not remote play. And I've got an old router set up just for this purpose, so it's as optimal as can be.

It's similar to WiiU and the gamepad.

I managed to get the first two hidden coins while stoned with it. Don't think there's an issue :)
