The main storyline missions are still good after the prologue. But there's a lot of plodding stuff to do in-between them. The prologue is just a string of good missions one after another and it's a very noticeable dip in quality once the padding becomes prevalent.

E: Mid-game you pretty much have to spend 90-120 minutes doing the same stuff over and over again between the good parts. Sometimes you'll have fun with that, other times you just want to move on but can't. That is when you become frustrated with the game.

With padding you mean those racket missions? Man am I starting to get sick and tired of this. It totally lost the great feeling the prologue missions had and is really ruining the experience for me.

I wish I could just skip these missions because they end up all being pretty much the same. These all should have been unique missions, not like this.

Yeah. I remember when I got to this part and talked to the NPC who gives you your first quest. Before that all quests were given with actual directed cut scenes with some of the most natural acting characters I've seen in games. Then this guy was just standing in one place, flapping his lips and arms like any other RPG NPC. It felt like it was from another game.

The end game gets better again but it comes so late. I want to encourage people to get there since it's a very satisfying wrap-up to the story but I can't blame anyone for dropping it before that.

Yup. It's a shame they have different kind of cutscenes because the well made ones, damn... really impressive. I'm definitely staying till the end but it saddens me to think how much better it would have been if all this racket Shit had not been in there.

By the way, is that part with the
KKK
still even in there?

For me, it's one of the saddest examples of a potentially great game compromised by repetitive, open world bloat. So many aspects are done really, really well, but they got too focused on quantity over quality.

I love the setting, the atmosphere, the sense of place. Combat feels vicious and satisfying. Some very enjoyable main missions. Cars feel appropriately heavy and are very fun to drive. It's just a cool, immersive world and era to be in.

They just tried to pad a very high quality 25 hour game into a 50 hour game, and it seriously hurts the overall experience.

Yep it's a goddamned shame. They indeed did nail all those other things but the repetition even in the main story chapters is really ruining it for me. I am having a hard time continuing with the game and not just saying "fuck it, I'm done". Every fucking main story mission now comes down to the exact same thing. Hell even GTA IV has more variety. :(

Man, had the season pass, completely had forgotten about this game after finishing it in about 40hours when it came out but the new DLC is so short.

There's nothing else to do in the new Parish area after I'm done, let it become another area so I can give control to one of my underlings or something. (Still annoyed the Bayou is a "neutral" area)

The weed growing seems to be a method to make more money but they don't even have real money sinks in this game. I already make too much money and have everything upgraded.

At least let me buy property or something. Let me upgrade me areas more, I don't know.

Also no one seems to acknowledge I basically own New Bordeaux.

Kinda disappointed with the new DLC. I guess I'll see what the other two packs add, but I wouldn't pay 15$ just for this one, maybe with all of them combined it may be worth it.

As if these story missions before a good one appears weren't a big enough chore, they now want me to find garbage barges and they don't even show them on the map. This is the worst bullshit I've had in a game in a long time. I'm not even having fun anymore. The developers really didn't think things through.

Which part of the game is this in? Can't even remember it.

Oh and yes,
the KKK bit
is still in the game. It's actually one of the better racket quest lines overall, one of two that I thought used the premise well. It would stand out if it was one of few who used that structure rather than one in like twelve.

So I'm LTTP here, but I just wrapped up the main game (I have Faster, Baby! installed but I think I need a break from open worlds for a while). Anyone able to point to some good story discussion threads/articles/podcasts? Absolutely loved the story and would like to read up on other people's thoughts.

Probably just this thread. I think they discussed it in a GB podcast can't be sure.

At any rate, Lincoln and Donovan are some of my favorite protagonist.

Probably why I finished the game in the first place.

Deluxe edition with the season pass is on sale at best buy for $32 (with GCU).

Even though I own it digitally, should I pick this up then trade the disc into gamestop for ~$17?

I guess it comes down to: is the season pass content worth $15?

I just finished that one and while it felt good mowing them all down it really came down to the same thing. Man this whole system is just broken, it doesn't work. For example before going to that woman at the diner I had killed everybody in that mall, yet a few minutes later I have to go back there, even pick the lock again and kill everyone once more, sigh. This whole thing right there for the main story is exactly what ruins the whole game. :(

EDIT

Nevermind I actually just got that part now.

who knows? only the first DLC has been released, not sure the first DLC is worth the price, it's very short, but by god if the missions aren't fun.

It's not perfect, and the repeated dialog from Roxy grates BIG TIME, but the destruction missions are seriously fun.

So, even though this game wasn't really on my radar at all, I've somehow ended up in possession of the collector's edition with all the DLC.

What can I say? It was £35 and I'm a sucker for a bargain.

Anyway, I've started the prologue and I'm enjoying it, but from what I've read here I'm not sure I will get around to completing it. I'll give it a chance, but it sounds like I will enjoy the DLC more.

Can I jump in to the DLC without knowing anything about the main game outside of the prologue?

So I picked up this game for $20 at best buy. I traded it after the first week it came out knowing I would eventually come back to it. I forgot how boring it was to drive from one side of the map to the other in this lifeless game. They never patched in fast travel? Too bad...the story is decent and there is a certain satisfaction to headshots in this game.

Oh my I just did the faster baby dlc and what an amazing game and narrative. Easily one of my favorite narratives and settings in a video game

I've been playing for a bit and man is it boring. Really liked the intro, and the faux doc style of storytelling is a lot of fun. But now I'm honestly just trying to rush through the game taking over all the rackets. It's honestly not fun at all. The story is super bland atm and that also makes me not want to explore the city at all. Is there ever going to be a story? Or will I be taking over rackets till it's game over?

It's such a shame because I really liked Mafia 2 because of the story. And there is literally nothing coming close to a cool storyline atm.

For the base game this is pretty much par for the course. Majority of the game you are just taking over rackets/districts, you get some narrative sprinkled in here and there. This was the biggest disappointment of M3 as I consider the open world, atmosphere and music to be top notch, its just a pity the gameplay wasn't up to the same level.

Faster, Baby! was a definite improvement in the gameplay department, but it was all over way too soon.

I am looking forward to Stones Unturned which should be dropping in a day or so. More Donovan is never a bad thing :)

I started again with Mafia 3 since I was given a review key for the DLC. Unfortunately the game still freezes from time to time for a second when driving through the city. Is there any fix for this? FPS are fine.

Although the mission design is horrible and boring repetitive, the gunplay and driving is pretty cool. 60's atmosphere and music is a real blast, too. But I won't play this with these technical problems. Any tips?

GTX 1070, i5 4690k and 16GB DDR3 RAM.

Apparently the new DLC is really short too. :/

Sitll on the fence about buying the season pass.

Cross posting from the other thread :

Just finished the DLC, I spent 3ish hours with it. The missions with Donovan are so much fun - such a good rapport between the two, some high octane set pieces, and a really intriguing storyline of American treason. The bounty hunt missions finally make use of the trunk and picking up enemies, and some hilarity ensues.

The outfits are great, the new vehicle I don't care for but it's a nice addition. The new area is such a beautiful change of pace, a really good environmental mashup of jungle areas and military bases.

I must say, the features that Hangar 13 have continually added have been awesome. Sniper support is a nice way to take out enemies from afar, and the gunplay and turret sections are familiar and solid. I still think the gunplay and driving in this game are the best in the third person open world crime genre, and the set pieces here are fantastic.

I think at the end of the day, the Season Pass will give you about five-six hours of new story missions along with all the new features and outfits. I think I paid $20 for it, and I loved so much of the game. It's icing on the cake but a bit light on content.

Only 3hrs eh ? Seems around the same length as Faster, Baby! Well, at least what we do get sounds good...I'll be firing it up when I get home from work.

Isn't this always recommended? Sales happen super fast these days. Thanks to market price scimming nobody have to pay full price for very long.

Do season passes often go on sale though? Mafia 3 is on sale right now on Steam, but the season pass is still full price.

Okay, that's a good question I wasn't paying full attention to. I could be wrong but season passes are usually less frequent in sales.

Finished the DLC content last night, spent around 3-4hrs (inc. the 3 bounty hunter missions). The amount of content is maybe even less than Faster, Baby!, but the main story is quite good...enjoyed the banter between Linc and Donovan.

I paid for the deluxe edtn at release for the same price I would have paid for the standard edtn...so I am not really complaining too much, the DLC has been serviceable (if not fantastic)

I'm expecting the 3rd and final piece of DLC to be around the same length, so you maybe get around 9hrs additional playtime with the season pass which last time I checked around $50aud on Steam. I have seen games with less content sell for more than that, so I still think its good value imo and you can of course pick it up cheaper if you look around.

Hmm, on the fence about the base game here, just a little question. Can you continue playing after finishing the game and then play the DLC ? I mean I can't imagine it any other way but sometimes endgame and DLC are dumb that way.

Yes, it reverts back to just before the point of no return once you finish it.

I really like the new location for the Stones Unturned DLC, and the Lincoln/Donovan dialogue is a lot of fun. The shootout setups are also great, especially the 2 that drop the lights and have you going up against flashlight mooks. The main missions here and in "Faster Baby!" show that Hanger 13's work on narrative focused missions in the main game was definitely not a fluke. I especially like having Roxy and Donovan with you here for their particular DLCs as it provides a dynamic you really didn't have with the underbosses in the main game, which I feel was a missed opportunity. I haven't gotten to the Bounty missions yet, but I'll clean those up in due time.

Thought I posted in here already...

I bought the Deluxe version off Humble Bundle at the end of March for under $25 and finished it and Faster Baby awhile back, enjoyed the story and Lincoln is one bad motherfucker but yeah... That padding. I'm use to the repetitive grind stuff so I didn't hate it too much though would've been nice if they could've spent more time on variety, felt tacked on because they didn't have time to actually flesh it out. Had to lock the game at a quarter of my refresh rate (36FPS) and even still the game would regularly go over 90% CPU utilization on my ol'2500k at 4.5GHz and still get frame rate drops here and there. I was surprised that mirror reflections were still broken, it's incredibly lame that after all this time they've not really seemingly done much to fix them or improve the game's performance because there's no reason, not even the lighting solution that should excuse how poorly this runs when there's other, more intensive open world games that run much better with less issues. I'm glad my hype died down before launch and I held off until reviews but for what I paid for the Deluxe version I'm satisfied but man if I paid full price for it I'd be kind of pissed, not just with the main game and its issues but with how short Faster, Baby was. Going to start Stones Unturned right now.

EDIT: Seems the recent Steam update has fucked up controller support. Yay. Fixed it but that was annoying.

I tried the PS4 (Pro) demo of Mafia III and I finally have fun with the game. Despite having it locked at 30 FPS it's way smoother than with +50FPS on my PC with all those micro stutters and second long freezes. It doesn't help with the repetitive mission design, though, but it seams the technical side played its role in me not enjoying this game. Maybe I should get the full version for the PS4.

The last DLC was very cool. It was like a dark level from an Uncharted game.
The last part was awesome and it feels very good to shoot bad guys with Donovan at your side. This duo works si damn well.

Regarding the ending,
it really felt like they made us the bad guys. Our heroes are clearly blinded by patriotism, and the villain showed a lot of good will. If his methods weren't that bloody, he could almost make a point.

Mafia 3 is gonna be $19.99 at gamestop tomorrow, 6/10, only on PS4/Xbox one (I don't think they sell the PC boxed version). Would definitely recommend it at that price, especially since you can finish in 20-30 hours and trade it in for $10-20 back into gamestop.

I just finished the main campaign today, I had actually bought it at launch, played for a while, grew extremely bored, and traded it in. Rebought recently when it was $22 digital on PSN, had the season pass already (it was $10 more at launch) so also played through the two story DLCs. Enjoyed them both, the DLCs felt a lot meatier than most recent single player game DLCs with the exception of Witcher 3, which is of course the gold standard.

I'd recommend M3, while the side quests and the main campaign drags HEAVILY especially as you are just killing sub bosses over and over and over again, the story is pretty interesting and good for the most part. Pretty cool hanging out in 70s New Orleans although when you compare this game to something like GTA 5, Witcher 3, or even Persona 5 it lacks a lot of polish / depth when it comes to NPCs, but there is definitely a strong atmosphere and vibe in the game.

Pretty easy platinum too, have to just play twice but you can get 90% of the trophies done in the first run without too much extra effort.

Still, overall I'd say mafia 2 was just a more fun game, mafia 3 was very depressing at times and the ending was interesting but also anti climactic in many ways. There really isn't a good NG+ implementation either, you just start all over basically with no carry over.

May someone tell how do I proceed faster in the story? I just did a couple of optional side missions (e.g. for Vito) in hope for some cool cutscene but that didn't work out. So I just want to push through the story as quickly as possible because it's intriguing with the prolepsis showing how the investigation on the events were executed.

Even when I only do the story chapters it's always the same, steal/murder/free at a couple of different places. There's just so much driving rewarded only with shooting. Is there any way to skip some amounts of these activities? Do I have to do ALL those story missions?

Right now I'm at the point to track down Remy Duvall If I recall correctly (it just takes so bloody long...).

DLC's not all out yet, I think. So that probably wouldn't happen for a bit.

And man, I need to get back to this. Played it around when it came out and really enjoyed it, but haven't touched it since like December. It's at the top of my backlog in terms of games I accidentally left like that, at least.

Same. But with everyone saying that it gets boring after a while, I'm kind of being swayed to skip this.

Is it really as bad as people are saying? Are the repetitive/boring bits worse than what was in Mafia 2?

IIRC Mafia 2 was more or less straight story which didn't have a ton of repetitive padding. In Mafia 3 to move the story forward you kind of do the same basic thing (disrupting the two rackets in each district enough to get the guy running them to come out and then taking them out to draw the boss out) around a hundred times over the course of the game. Then there's a few side missions to increase cash flow in a district and some loyalty missions given by your three lieutenants. You can give it a little variety but there isn't much when destroying rackets and there's more repetitive stuff beyond that. Depends on how you feel about grinding which is what it feels like relatively quickly. It didn't bother me a ton but I was already prepared for it and use to grinding anyway. I also bought the Deluxe Edition on PC (which is still in a relatively embarrassing state) for less than $25 so I haven't regretted my time.

So how is this game? Seems everybody is crapping on it after the prologue / intro missions? I want to buy it since its cheap now and I would like some good open world game

bought it today at gamespot. It's ok.

Only played literally the first 20 mins and killed some hatians....the enemy AL are dumb and sometimes just stand there.
