VR needs more social games like Star Trek: Bridge Crew (Also new gameplay video)

Just came across a couple videos of one of my most anticipated games, Star Trek: Bridge Crew. Thought I'd share them. This literally seems like a Star Trek fan's fantasies come to life.

This game is by the same folks who developed Werewolves Within, which is a great game where you sit around a fire with other folks in VR and play as villagers trying to suss out who among the group are monsters.

Games like Star Trek and Werewolves Within are games where the social aspect is key. The nature of a social game means the people you're playing with and their unique personalities really spice up the whole experience. A game will never be the same twice. When you're relying on talking to other players for most of the interaction with the game, it keeps things dynamic and so the game won't start to feel stale for a long time, compared to something like a VR shooting gallery.

The fact that you're in VR really makes all the difference too. But again, it's a case of if you're never tried VR I can't really convey it properly. But basically because you're in a stationary, seated position just like your character, and no matter where you look you see the game world and other "people" talking and gesticulating, you really feel like you're inhabiting this body and the role that comes with it. That sense of immersion lets you totally escape into the game.

So, yeah. I'm excited for this. But does anyone know of any more games that are out/coming out that are similar to these two games? Games where the whole premise relies on social interaction within VR? Because I want to play them.

Also, kudos to Ubisoft for these two games and for supporting VR more than most other publishers.

EDIT
A new video has been released detailing all of the roles. Watching this video, it's easier to get a better understanding of how you actually play the game.

BONUS:
Here's a video of a match of Werewolves Within as one of the players (who's super drunk) barfs on his roommates shoes, and you can hear his roommate yelling at him. Comedy gold. NOT FOR EMETOPHOBES!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjtgvG8wigo
(Games where you are stationary like this don't make you sick. This guy is just drunk.)

I just want a VR startrek game where I am captain and all my crew are friends in real life. Then when anyone makes a suggestion or an idea I tell them to fuck off because I am the captain.

That's basically this, if all your friends have VR headsets.

Without a doubt and i have to say ST is looking more impressive all the time. I just wish the price for folks wasn't so expensive.
OR they would allow crossplay with PS4.

Bridge Crew is super cool, but you have to understand, VR is still super expensive.

I mean, nevermind getting all those headsets into your house, how many people have enough friends with VR headsets that can play that?

Maybe. Is that a board game? Never heard of it. Does it look like it plays similar?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceteam

"The idea is that you're all members of a spaceship crew, trying to keep it from crashing."[3] Each player is responsible for a different control panel on their individual device's screen, with various knobs and dials labelled with a variety of technobabble. As the game begins, differing orders are given to each player via their device as a task to pilot the ship. The player must then verbally tell the group the order that needs to be accomplished until the person with the relevant control panel activates the order correctly. Simultaneously, the player must listen for any orders that are relevant to their control panel and activate them accordingly.[4]

Upon correctly applying multiple orders from all players, the ship enters warp, and the group of players continues to the next stage of increasingly difficult gameplay. "...The tasks get harder. Sometimes you may find your instruments mislabeled, for example."[3] If mistakes are made, damage will occur to the ship in the form of different players control panels breaking, and if too many mistakes are made, the group's ship is consumed by a supernova and the game ends. "There also are events that require everyone to do something three-dimensional with their phones. If you hit a wormhole, you have to tip your devices upside down. To avoid asteroids, you have to all shake your devices, ideally without flinging them across the room.

They do. Werewolves Within is crossplay between all the VR headsets. The vast majority of people you meet are on PlayStation (and it is one of the reasons you can find people to play with on pc).

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I am also looking very much forward to this. VR needs more good games that are not horror.

I know, right? I wanted sooooo bad to give Capcom money for released a AAA VR game in Resident Evil, I just knew I would be wasting it because I can't handle horror in VR.

Honestly, a mobile solution is way better. Everyone has smartphones. Everyone connects via wifi and tie it into a an app on your PC that gets fed to your tv and there you go, everyone has their own tactical console and you have your main display. Easy enough and way cheaper. Probably would control a lot better too actually having a physical touchscreen device just like in the show. If you really want to get into the spirit, grab some starfleet outfits from amazon and make some painted cardboard props.

Cool idea, but not at all one bit practical.

edit: So basically yeah, an advanced licensed version of spaceteam with a sidekick pc app for TV display. Why has nobody done this yet? Crystal chronicals got made, why can't my idea?

Gonna have to decide between the Oculus and PSVR version, but I'm learning towards the Rift just because of the Touch controllers.

Because this VR version is way better than that half-measure you're describing could ever be :D

Also, you don't need to be in the same room with eachother for this to work, the idea is that you and your friends use your own headset at home and play online in most cases, they don't expect you to have a VR lan party everytime you want to play :p

I'm also not at all interested in the Star Trek franchise but social VR games are the best, they let you and your friends go places and do things that just aren't possible normally and allow for such unique and memorable experiences. I'm planning on picking this up day 1 even without any interest in the franchise because the social element seems really entertaining, I don't have any reason to dislike the franchise I've just never jumped into it but this game may be the thing that gets me to finally look into it.

Yeah, not a lot of VR games I can think of that go social cooperative quite like Bridge Crew does yet. 3D Charades in Rec Room come close to scratching that itch though. I feel like there are some other cooperative VR space games coming down the line that kind o do this as well (with more freedom to walk around and do ground missions etc).

With the option, why wouldn't you get the Rift version? Headset comfort?

I don't know anything about Star Trek and don't know a single human irl that also has a headset so that video just made me sad. Looks like it would be a freaking blast to play with a few friends.

Also, is that old IGN Tal?

I was not at all interested in the Star Trek game, but after having a blast with Werewolves Within, I would give it a shot. WW is so much fun.

So does this have any kind of single player? ...Because I absolutely love Star Trek, I have Oculus but surprise surprise none of my friends do and I'm not big on playing with strangers!

So in that regard I think Oculus needs more single player experiences that could be played with your mates over, sharing one headset! I did some Robo Recall nights with a few beers swapping out with my friends everytime someone lost and it made for a sweet night!

Headset comfort and population really. I'd expect more PSVR players than Rift players online.

Ah! One of the games I was thinking about is Pulsar: Lost Colony. It's in early access but similar ideas. VR and monitor people can play together as well.

It's cross play between Vive, Rift, and PSVR so no need to worry about that part. All the Ubi VR games are actually.

Welp, I guess I'm going for the Rift version then. The Move controllers are nice, but a bit finicky for me. Gonna be awesome to play this game though cross-play with people.

This is something I'd absolutely love to play in like a theme park/pop-up environment. It's not really that practical to get 5 friends together in someone's house with 5 HMDs all that often.

Yeah, this is one of the best implementations of VR - the problem with it is that the price is absolutely prohibitive.

Really, the best setup for this sort of thing with casual consumers would be if VR arcades, or something similar, became a thing. People won't easily shell out several thousand to buy all the headsets needed, and machines powerful enough to actually run the game; but I'd easily drop £5-£10 to command a starship for about an hour.

This kind of post is honestly shocking.

Fuckin online?

*Shakes head*

In my experience it's even harder to get 5 friends with all the necessary equipment to play a single game at the same time online than it is in person.

2 people is usually fine online, getting 5 friends on the same page? Maybe your friends get a lot less distracted than mine...

Yeah this is exactly what I think this is perfect for. Definitely a solid business idea too...

As I get older, there's basically zero chance I could get multiple friends together on the same schedule. Online at our houses when the kids are asleep, sure no problem.

I'm really pumped for Star Trek to come out. Werewolves is easily my most played game on my PSVR. I need to bring out the vr headset again

"Number One, go take a number two."

Actually, after discovering Star Trek this year, I'm rather interested. would be even cooler if you can negotiate with crews in other ships.

How's the multiplayer scene in that Werewolves game? I've always been interested in picking it up on Vive, but seemed expensive for MP only, especially with the fickle VR community which (on Vive at least) tends to migrate from one game to the next.

I also heard/read that Werewolves (or whatever the official title is) is cross play among Occulus, Vive, and PSVR, is that true?

Yes, it's true. As of right now I can still find a game whenever I look for one.

If you're interested at all, now is the time. Once the community is gone you'll never be able to have this wonderful experience again.
(Who knows how long that will be though, people still seem to love it)

Wow. Thanks for this thread OP. I haven't paid much attention to Star Trek Bridge Crew and didn't know until now that it's a VR social game similar to Werewolves Within. What once was something to look into later, now has become one of my most anticipated games coming out this year. Awesome!

You're welcome!

Now let's just hope it doesn't get delayed for a third time. :)

Yeah it's a great game that I hope continues to survive, also it's on sale in the EU store, so if you're interested then go get it now.
