Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

It's not the same code indeed, it was a stress test on Scorpio with full lod and complete physics for all cars, something that apparently the full games optmizes.

And the test was: Even a 1070 doesn't match the level of performance they showed on scorpio with this game, only a 1080 matched.

Keep in mind that this particular demo only used about 55-65% of the gpu time according do DF, and Forza 6 on Xbone uses about 90%.

So please, you stop. You are the one trying to infer I'm saying scorpio is a 1080 equivalent as I clearly saying it matched the performance for this test.
Both tests reaching a locked framerate doesn't mean they matched the performance.

Both the Scorpio and a 1080 could run Super Mario Bros. at a locked 60, that doesn't mean they are equal, even if they got equal results in that test.

Of course specs wise it doesn't compare to a 1080, but they showed a game running at the same performance as it.

Whatever tuning Ms made to improve the design of the console clearly worked on this game.

Citation needed on that.
Because as I said, RX480 could run Forza Apex at 4k/60fps.

Let's see...I'll have to do 2 separate categories...

Boos:
Xbox One: Riley Reid
PS4: Eva Lovia
Ps4 Pro: Channel Preston
Scorpio: Jayden James

Butt:
Xbox One: Riley Reid
PS4: Channel Preston
Ps4 Pro: Eva Lovia
Scorpio: Alexis Texas

are you content now?

I had no clue who those where until I Googled the first name...safe to assume all are porn actors?

Wonder what articles and videos we get tomorrow. There will be new ones tomorrow m, right?

And then the wait starts for the reveal of the name, design, release date and price. Likely E3 after what Richard said.

Um yes? MS have said since Day 1 this isn't a mass market device and for the core audience. They sold / explained it to the exact people they expect to buy it.

I guess if the goal is to market it solely to the Xbox core with a bit extra, it's fine. But I don't think that's the case. That seems extremely silly in the current market.

Did they do comparisons? Same game, same settings, same cpu/motherboard/ram, etc but just different GPU, and the Scorpio's GPU kept up with the 1080 at the same unlocked ram numbers, and resolution? That's the way you measure if a game is running at the same performance. Otherwise they could have built the game to run very efficiently for that hardware.

I would love the RX 480 to be the same as a 1080, but I have to pony up some serious cash to get there.

I'm going to watch the videos soon. I doubt Digital Foundry compared it to a 1080 though.

Yeah, they did comparisons, here's again what they wrote:

Project Scorpio vs PC: to-the-metal design vs sheer brute force

The bottom line is that Scorpio's six teraflops will almost certainly go a lot further than an equivalent PC part

From what I've seen so far, there is some evidence that Scorpio's true 4K performance could pose a challenge to the likes of Nvidia's GTX 1070 and AMD's Fury X-class hardware

Out of interest, we tested Forza 6 Apex with similar settings at 4K on GTX 1060, 1070 and 1080

Frames were dropped on GTX 1060 (and a lot of them when wet weather conditions kicked in), while GTX 1070 held firm with only the most intense wet weather conditions causing performance dips. Only GTX 1080 held completely solid in all test cases

It's only one data point, and the extent to which the code is comparable at all is debatable, but it certainly doesn't harm Scorpio's credentials: Forza 6 Apex received plenty of praise for the quality of its PC port.

If Scorpio's GPU can hold native 4K and hand in results on par or better than GTX 1070, this is a seriously good result for a console.

this is a non starter because games still need to work on the OG Xbox One, unless they decide to ship 2 different discs in a box
Ah yes. Stupid OG. Probably not technically feasible for the OG to read only 2 layers, and have the S and Scorpio able to access a third layer on the same disc.

Which doesn't fix the issues the xbox division has.

Ok and what does that have to do with Scorpio which was never designed to give MS this glorious comeback to win TEH CONZOLE WAR!

Scorpio exists to keep their core demographic invested in the platform and to continue to drive up ASP's and revenue.

Quoting for truth.
I mean, MS has hyped this console as hell . A monster, a real beast. And at the end they offer a normal and 'human' upgrade. Can you really blame someone because it expected more massive improvement in the specs? It's all a MS pr fault. Though I perfectly expected such specs.

That was a terrible way to drum up excitement. Not even one game shown off besides a single screenshot.
For the kind of product Scorpio is, literally could not disagree more. This is a piece of hardware for enthusiasts, and throwing all of the tech specs out into through wild through a very insightful and knowledgeable news outlet is much better than some sterile presentation from an executive spewing numbers that even he doesn't understand.

Xbox 1070.

This is cool news, we're returning to roots like 360 was: a solid mid-high range hardware at a - hoping - fair price.

Dead rising 4k remaster would be nuts.

It seems silly with the position they are in, and with them recently last year releasing really nice well designed console with some extra features. I thought that they would have held off on scorpio and make it a new gen to launch next year to get a heads up.

By that time it gave them time to get software in order somewhat and have them continue the good improvements they've made on the console and the OS.

Still no SSD... PS5 save us

That's... not happening any time soon. SSD prices aren't falling fast enough and game sizes aren't exactly going down.

Are we expecting more details anytime soon? I've just been assuming that E3 will be the big reveal of the xbox, price, and release date right before they dive into games. Is there really much else that they can talk about before then?

If they don't bring serious games to E3 they're still screwed, most powerful console doesn't matter when there's no good new exclusives people want to play. I hope Xbox can turn it around honestly.

A 1070 can do Forza 6 @4K 60fps ultra 8xMSAA

edit: I have a 1070 and played the game @4k 60fps

As for PS5 -- it will happen, but not soon.

I think rumors about PS5 will start circulating in 2019, not unlike how rumors Orbis (PS4's codename) started circulating in 2012.

Sony will call a PlayStation Meeting for December 3rd 2019, to both celebrate the PlayStation's 25th anniversary, and announce PS5 as a completely new console for a new generation. Mark Cerny will show us PS5 is over ten times more powerful than the original PS4 (and over 3 times more powerful than Scorpio) using a highly customized Zen+ APU, custom Navi GPU on a 2nd generation 7nm process and 64 GB HBM3, providing over 2 Terabytes/sec bandwidth. There will be a massive blowout at E3 2020 with release in November, about a week after the U.S. presidential election. PS5 will be powerful enough to combine native 4K, a huge leap in graphical fidelity and much more dynamic worlds thanks to Zen, HBM3 and much faster SSD storage technology that AMD is already combining with Vega technology on the Radeon SSG / 1TB SSD.

Very promising.

Needs to be $399 though. $499 will be way too high to compete with PS4 pro, even with the stronger specs.

Unless MS take a gamble that software sales swing massively in their favour I agree.

But if they've data backing the above, they could take a significant loss on it if it's viable

Not a chance.

MS are all about software and services, and moneys earned on stock Xbone are as good as on Scorpio. The more competitively they price Scorpio against their existing box, the more they are encouraging cannibalization of their own sales as much as their competitors.

The big question is how badly will current Xbone sales suffer now that they are promoting its big brother? PS4 definitely suffered a downturn between Pro being announced and released, and I'd expect an even more severe effect on Xbone S due to the larger performance differential.

The reality is that even now basic PS4 is handily outselling Pro in every global market, demonstrating the importance of price point over technical capability. So unless MS are prepared to completely remove Xbone S from the marketplace, taking a hit on RRP for Scorpio is always going to be a no-win situation.

Somethings gotta give, HDDs will be a major bottleneck going forward. I could see prices going down if one of the major players buys up a huge stock of 500gb solid drives.

Or, at least just support the damn things lol

The OG PS4 saved you back in 2013 when you could simply replace the hard drive in 10 minutes if you wanted an SSD.

I've had an SSD in my PS4 since 2014, trust me it's negligible in some cases, and there's no difference in other cases
