A reboot with all the gens from the start is exactly what I wanted.

This really didn't need to be "Pokemon 1.0 You will (not) win the league"

Glad it's not.

Im sick of my favorite franchises wanking off to their Gen 1 and ignoring the rest, looking at you, Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Soo you replace two iconic sidekicks with the most generic af looking characters as possible. O..K

I would be more inclined to be ok with it if they didn't look like generic pokemon trainer NPCs

Brock and Misty's "iconic" designs are the worst those two ever wore. The new folks look way better, and fit right in with the franchise's recent look.

Now, if we were talking about the FRLG or HGSS designs for Brock and Misty, that'd be another story -- I'll grant you that those ones were cooler. But they wouldn't have used those anyway.

Is Pokémon anime gonna go the multiple timelines route like the games? I already figured the anime was in itself a different timeline but I guess there are multiple times lines within itself

You're overthinking it. This movie is likely to be a one off and the next movie will be back with the current anime narrative which has been going on since 1997

Seems like they were using nostagia for the old anime as a honey pot to get gen oners in the theater and then unloading everything post gen 1 to get them back in the saddle.

It's the 20th anniversary of the anime and movies, so of course it'll use Ash

this makes no sense to me at all when they act like its the origin story in the trailer.
"this is the story of how they met", when they even changed that part o_O
what is the point of even including that but none of the rest. Could they not source the original voice actors?

No, Pokemon Sun and Moon is.

Guys, it's obvious that it's not a retelling. It's an alternate version with Pokémon from all regions in it. Why is this an issue?

It's not.

That's what people thought it was to be, but it's not.

Can you really fit an entire saga into one 90 minute movie? God no. Just look at the mess that is Pokémon Origins for that.

It references Ho-Oh's cameo from the 1st episode & seems to be attempting to give resolution to that dropped plot point.
It has the 1st season theme song. A song that obviously makes people think of Season 1.
It has a number of recreated scenes like Ash's defiance of the Spearow flock.

Those are very specific & direct callbacks to Kanto League. The teaser & 1st trailer had absolutely nothing hint or suggesting anything more than Season 1 nostalgia. Fans were completely justified in thinking it was a retelling because that ALL that it was presented as before trailer 2.

it wasn't a plot point, it was symbolizing the call to adventure and the unknown. Thats entirely lost when Ho-oh is just a main character in the movie, so even the nostalgia part is wack imo.

Before (late) people make silly assumptions, this is the official plot summary

To all Pokémon fans: This is the story of the duo's "meeting" and "promise". This is the creation of the 20th anniversary movie! Pocket Monsters, or "Pokémon" for short: Mysterious lifeforms that hide many secrets. There are still many things we don't know about their ecology. Even today, Pokémon Trainers continue their adventures with the aim of encountering Pokémon never before seen...

Ash, a boy living in Pallet Town, greeted the morning of his 10th birthday, the day he could become qualified to become a Pokémon Trainer. Ash's heart was filled with a desire for Pokémon he has never seen before and a world he has never seen before, but while he was meant to be given a Pokémon that would become his partner at the Oak Laboratories, he ended up severely oversleeping, and all that was left for him was a single Pikachu, a Pokémon that did not get attached to humans. "Do you hate me? I like you!" Even though the two were at odds with one another, their friendship deepened little by little, and as they looked up at the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh that flew through the sky on the day they set off, Ash and Pikachu swore an oath as they held one of its Rainbow Wings: "Let's go meet it together one day!" And thus, Pikachu and Ash, who set off on his journey to become the world's greatest Pokémon Master, end up meeting the Trainers Makoto and Soji on their way before getting told a legend concerning Ho-Oh.

"Those who, guided by the Rainbow Wing, meet with Ho-Oh, shall become the Heroes of the Rainbow." Ash and the others end up getting guided by Marshadow, a mysterious Pokémon that had been lurking in Ash's shadow without anyone realizing, and make their way to Mount Tensei, where Ho-Oh lives, but a strong opponent appears before them. Will the duo manage to reach Ho-Oh?! In order for them to fulfill the promise they swore on the day the departed, the two of them now begin an adventure that will last until they become "true partners"!

Fine, but intentions didn't change viewer reaction, that many thought the sudden presence of a bird not seen in the games was gonna be a big deal later in the show & then nothing came of it.

Maybe he'll be able to win the league now.

To be honest with you I haven't seen the latest pokemon anime yet but continue playing the games. Does the anime as it stands have all character designs like that? the two characters next to Ash stick out badly imo.

Why. They were so close to getting me interested in a Pokemon movie again.

EDIT - Looks like they're trying something different, at least. They put Lucario and Piplup in there since they were two of the most popular Pokemon not in Gen 1. I like that there's an old man version of Red in this.

Damn.... Consider my hype totally deflated I was really looking forward to a huge nostalgia trip to the cinema, now I just don't even care.

Edit: Gary as well this is cold.

I'm totally down with this. I'm more excited now.

Although I myself don't understand why people are so upset about this since this is a reimagining of the beginning, I know that some truly liked Misty and Brock so it's obviously upsetting for them. But this isn't a 1:1 remake. It's almost like a reboot since we have new characters and all of the Pokemon from all gens are available here.

Maybe it's the final nail in the coffin for Pokeshipping.

Also it has more Ho-Oh. Already makes it better for me.

EDIT: One thing I will say though is that the style and design of the new characters are vastly different than the older ones drawn nicer. There's a gap between the two. Ash and Nurse Joy look like their former counterparts but the new people look likr characters you would see in X & Y or Sun and Moon.
The rival and companion designs look very Gen 6/7. Kind of jarring seeing them with Ash and Nurse Joy, who more or less retain their season 1 appearance, right down to the style of their eyes.
Yeah what Nabae said!

what are they rebooting if its a one off? if kids dont recognize the original characters, what would the harm be to include them? wouldnt it be better to appeal to both the young and the old? is it because Lucario and Piplup are really popular?

With the increasingly lower box office? If this movie reverses that trend I could see them going with a direct sequel to it.

The artistic continuity with the character designs is pissing me off. Ash and Nurse Joy look like they come from a totally different world than the other characters. Either change Ash and Nurse Joy at adopt the new look or vice versa. New boy looks like a reject Digimon character and new girl looks like a reject Ojamajo Doremi character.

Well yeah. Lucario and Piplup are more popular than say Chikorita and Chimchar.

I'm not the creator of this so I'm not saying I'm 100 percent right. But many of the same people saying they are upset about this were also upset that this was even announced in the first place. Lots of people called it a waste of time since they could just watch the original tv show versions.

Lots of us here are older people and so we recognize and appreciate the older characters but the younger audiences grew up with the newer ones. Many joined in again with Black and White as well as Sun and Moon so they have a stronger connection to the newer Pokemon than say a person who played through all the generations when they were first released.

For many of us here it's nostalgia. The same nostalgia that sometimes makes us see the newer Pokemon in disdain and compare it to the older ones. That isn't bad but sometimes our bias will slowly creep in. The same nostalgia that made the older viewers upset at the new animation of the Sun and Moon anime cause it wasn't like X and Y while others couldn't care less. The same nostalgia that is making lots of people upset about this change when most of the newer mainstream audience probably won't even bat an eye to this.

Again I'm probably 100 percent wrong and I'm not good at translating my thoughts to the screen but that's what I believe. Am I sad that Misty and Brock are gone? A little, yes. Will this impact me negatively in watching this movie? No. I want to see these new characters and their roles to come. Even if it is a one-off.

EDIT: Again I will say that the new character designs are what's throwing me off. They have the look of the X & Y and Sun and Moon series mixed into the original Pokemon look and feel so it's kinda weird in my opinion.

They're not portraying new characters that kids would recognize either, unless you mean incineroar?

I actually like that sun/moon anime is a big deviation from what they had before.
This is more just a really weird change to a big part of my childhood so yea its a bit jarring, like if someone remade Star Wars, and kept luke, but everyone else was different.
