Has anyone else noticed that Remote Play on PS4 Pro is better recently?

So I've got a pretty great setup for streaming across my household. I've got a great router hooked up in my living room, alongside a PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, and Steam Link, all connected via ethernet. On each TV in my and my two sibling's rooms, we have a PS TV, a Steam Link, and either our personal computer or a spare computer/laptop hooked up to our TVs - all wired directly to our personal lan switches, which themselves are all wired directly to our router. And so we're effectively able to stream our devices in any room in our home with little effort. It's been great, absolutely one of my favorite features this generation of gaming has introduced, especially when you factor in wireless device support as well.

Now, even with all of these devices wired directly to one another on an excellent network, I've noticed problems of varying degrees with all of the streaming solutions that have made them a bit less desirable over playing native than I would have hoped.

Xbox One S had excellent image quality when streaming to Windows, but the latency was noticeable, and I'd experience slight, intermittent stutters with every game.

PS4/PS4 Pro had decent image quality and less latency than the Xbox One S, but more stutters. The image quality was noticeably worse than any of my other streaming solutions, though. Whether I was playing on PSTV in 720p, or on PC in 1080p, the image quality was lacking, and compression artifacts were very noticeable.

Steam Link looks native, frankly, and on Beautiful quality, I get less than 7ms latency, which feels less than I get elsewhere. It's been the best I've used up to this point.

Except now, all of a sudden... my buddy boots up my PS TV in my bedroom to play Uncharted 4. And I'm watching him play this game, which I've played at length on the same TV using the same PS TV... and the image quality looks about as near to native as I could possibly expect a 720p 60fps stream to look. Gone completely are the compression artifacts. The stutters are nearly gone, too. I test it out on my PC in 1080p 60fps to the same results. It's looking and running nearly as well as my Steam Link does, and that's really surprising to me. Something happened in the last month - I don't think my network has changed at all, but remote play looks and feels a lot better now, and I think the recent update had something to do with it. At the very least, has anyone else noticed a pretty substantial improvement, or is it just me?

Will try it out tonight and see if it's improved. I never really had an issue with it on the vita besides a soft image but that was ages ago

Vita had always been good for me, with pstv being pretty shit.

I'll go see how the pstv in the living room works right now....

Edit: You know, I think you may be right. I just fired up fallout (PS4 pro) and it was pretty decent minus a few hiccups here and there. I could do an RPG like this.

I'm on WiFi and the pstv is about 15ft away from the router in a different room.

For comparison, I've NEVER had the pstv working good on WiFi in the 3 different apartments I've lived. Always had to go powerline to get anything remotely playable (haha).

I've been using an android tablet with a ds4 synced to the console - not the tablet (using the duel account hack) and it's been absolutely perfect on PS4 pro.

I use it all the time.

The more I've been fucking with remote play the last couple days, the more I'm convinced this isn't placebo and that there's an actual, noticeable improvement. Wish I had a way to test for certain.

I've been playing Persona 5 on my Vita with my launch PS4 and it has been playing great.

Some pixelation here and there though.

I'd really like to know if PS4 Pro makes Vita Remote Play better, in any definite way.

Also, has anyone tried Boost Mode on PS4 Pro (for games that didn't get a Pro patch) with Vita Remote Play?

I was thinking about trying Dark Souls II SotFS with that in mind.

Was just playing from across the country from my Pro. Worked flawlessly.

So yeah, I would say it's improved. Dunno if that's because of the Pro itself or updates since the Pro launched.

Uh. 7ms latency on Steam Link? You sure about that?

One thing I noticed testing it today is that I had way better (near flawless) performance streaming to my laptop from my PS4 slim compared to my Vita which would stutter to all hell and disconnect after about a minute.

I'll try optimizing it later before my trip this weekend, but the Vita will likely not end up as my portable PS4 device of choice. Maybe it was just having trouble with direct connect and will have better luck over wifi (as counter-intuitive as that sounds).

Seriously, I've been hooked up through Ethernet and have had reason to test via camera. At best, you're still gonna get at least 2 frames of latency at 60fps. Part of that would have been the inherent latency of a TV vs a monitor, but that was only display latency, I never even tried to measure input latency on the client (vs the server).

Steam Link is very impressive, certainly at that quality and it's very playable. It's definitely something that Sony/MS should be looking towards emulating in their remote play offerings, since the Steam Link is undeniably much better in every way.

But 7ms? It'd be incredibly impressive to see just the screen capture and compression done in that amount of time, nevermind the network transfer, decompression and input between the client and server.

I've been playing Persona 5 via direct connection to the Vita on remote play, it looks and plays wonderfully. It's so convenient being able to still play with the TV is in use by someone else.

Next, I plan to get a new LTE phone line so I can play anywhere with a Hotspot.

I hope this is true, PS4 remote play has always been unplayable for me with any PS4 model including my current Pro even when wired directly to my Asus AC68U router. Random lag spikes/cuts and overall too much latency. Doesn't matter if I use an Xperia X or a PC.

The only actually good remote play experiences I've had have been steam (PC to laptop) and Wii U (to the Gamepad).

My house is fully wired gigabit ethernet. I still expect there to be a very noticeably amount of latency with Steam Link. I'm not really sure how people play fast-paced games over remote play at all.

I find remote play good for games like Diablo, but anything that requires aiming or quick reflexes (eg dodging) is a pain. Even when it runs smoothly, it adds just enough input lag to make games like that feel sluggish.

I played Persona 5 on my Macbook pro while I was at my parents for the weekend.
100+ kilometers from my PS4 and my MB connected through Wi-Fi, it felt almost shockingly good. Completely forgot about the fact that it wasn't playing locally and enjoyed it for hours.

I'd say it's pretty fantastic for non-twitch games.

I've been playing Project Cars, Alien Hominid, GTAV, BlazeRush, Absolute Drift, Sonic Generations, Hitman, Snake Pass on PC and streaming to my phone with moonlight (works with homebrew Vita, free on iOS and playstore, chrome extension -webgl, java). Today I'll be playing yooka-laylee in bed.

This is how fast it is with a 2.4GHz network (though the router is purely used for streaming) - pc monitor on top, phone on bottom:

Does remote play work on all phones or just Sony ones btw?

Absolutely agree, it's a great feature.

I have a cabled gigabit Internet connection and remote play still run as shit on my pspro (which is supposed to have a better wifi but i'm using with cable). RP over the internet is simply not working.

^ might need to open ports for RP to work over the internet

That's pretty incredible, it seems just a fraction better than the best I've been able to get out of it, which might be a big enough difference. Are you using any special settings on the app or router?

I disabled internet with it so it doesn't mess with my PC internet, it just streams from my PC (connected by ethernet to the router) to my phone. It's only 2.4GHz too.

The program has the PC think your phone is an Nvidia Shield.

I just made sure the wifi channel I was streaming on was clear using wifiinfoview .

I also noticed (before I got the PS4 controller) with an ipega controller, the bluetooth caused problems when connected to my phone which was streaming. If I wired it using a short micro usb to micro usb cable, smooth as silk.

I use the wire for local stuff on the phone (mainly retroarch which is all in one for psp, ps1, n64, snes, nes, genesis, gba/gb/gbc etc).

The phone mount I use. I recommend it very highly.

Before getting the ps4 phone mount, I tried moonlight with vita and it was surprisingly good (completed snake pass with it), but it wasn't this fast.

Moonlight is pretty sweet as you can stream the desktop (with a shortcut to mtsc.exe in geforce experience) and run steam in big picture mode.

PC graphics and library on a handheld.

I have 20/20 fiber at home and I was ~100KM away on 100/100 fiber at my parents and it worked flawlessly.

So while it might not work for you, there's no denying that it actually works. Might depend on your router setup.

Remote play in house has always been good for me, but I've either used vita (which has a pretty low bandwidth signal to send) or ethernet to PC. Looks pretty good at 1080p on PC. IQ isn't quite as nice as steam streaming with unlimited setting on, but it's doable.

Uh. 7ms latency on Steam Link? You sure about that?

I do PC to PC steam streaming (I have my docked surface 2 running as a multimedia hub for the bedroom tv) and yeah, it's that good.

Nice, I'm going to try this tonight, last time I did it was with Nioh on launch and while the performance kept up and could play it, the image quality was really REALLY rough at times (30% of the time or so). Both PC and PS4 Pro wired.

Going to try it again, didn't turn on my console since nioh, I dont even have the latest OS version.

Thanks for the heads up.
