If you actually read the article you linked, you'd find that there is good reason to question the statement CPD provided about an incident involving the Chicago Department of Aviation's security team. Again this incident did not involve CPD, and while CPD did put out a press release, it was not a proper press release and did not deal with their officers. So yes, there is serious evidence to believe that the official reports of this incident are not entirely reliable.

Why bodycams and video footage in general changed the game. Can't paint the victims as something they were not.

Contradicts, at very least, all of the shitty comments from UA employees in their Facebook group right? They were saying he was going nuts before the police even came in.
All of the fellow passengers that have told their story have said that Dao was respectful and that they were "100% on his side."

Only one person has said that he was belligerent and that is the United CEO. And there's been zero evidence of that.

And even he's backed off on that now after the GMA interview. So there's now no one left saying he was belligerent.

Hm ok, maybe Emirates is not so bad then. I know for a fact that Qatar is really bad, there have been plenty of media reports about it

Then again you are still flying and supporting an airline that is wholly financed and controlled by a country and authorities in that country whose human rights record makes any corporation, including United, look like saints.

To say United is the devil look how they treat their customers, I fly these great Arab airlines, is so disconnected from reality it's laughable. Equally as laughable is the fact that this makes Emirates think they can talk shit. When you know, they just make people disappear, or jail them for years for much less. But please, let's keep praising and forking money over to airlines owned by some of the world's worst human rights offenders because one dude got (horrifically) booted from an airplane.

If it was so important, they should have offered more money. Go up to $2000 or $3000 and people would have been jumping at the chance. To stop at $800 and then decide a multi million dollar lawsuit is a preferable consequence is, well, massively stupid.

I really want to know what those two security guards were even thinking. How those fucking idiots ever got a job anywhere is astonishing.

Most likely they didn't even tell anyone they were allowed to insist on cash. So they were offering an $800 voucher (good for another fun experience with United, for a limited time only, restrictions may apply!) for someone to get kicked off and have a day's delay to get where they were going.

And they jumped directly from $800 voucher to violence.

It's insane, but it's also policy. That's why they were praised at first. Apparently they think treating customers like that is a long term positive, which is why they need to be slammed fucking hard over this to change that policy.

Even the fucking CEO of the company isn't defending United any more. I don't even understand what the United defence force thinks it's defending any more...

I mean it's all relative isn't it?
One could rightly say that the invasion of Iraq was the greatest affront against human rights in the 21st century.
Does that mean we should boycott all US products? It kind of makes any crimes committed by the UAE almost laughable in comparison.
I mean "some of the world's worst human rights offenders" and "jailing people for years" seems a bit rich coming from someone whose nation operates the likes of Guantanamo Bay, and has no qualms against invading the privacy of practically the entire planet.

Lol no. First off, the US government does not own United. Second, regardless of how you view the US government that doesn't justify defending UAE/Qatar. And lastly, the US has committed offenses sure, but there is literally no one or organization who knows anything about it that will agree with you that the US is worse or even comparable to those countries. You are on your own for that one. It's one thing to criticize a nation, but don't let your hate consume you to a point you live in fantasy land.

I don't think they are allowed to insist on cash if they voluntarily give up their seat, they can insist on cash if they are involuntarily bumped.

Yeah, I think you're right. Now that I think about it, it's not totally clear they could insist on cash even then since this wasn't technically an overbooking.

Just puts the passengers' situation in perspective. They were offered vouchers that may be useless (if they don't want to attempt to fly United again at a time the voucher allows). In return they were to be kicked off a flight they already boarded and be delayed to the next day.

Nobody accepted that offer so United jumped straight to physical violence. And they were praised for it.

It's awful, and it's insane, but it's policy.

Now Dr Dao just need to also sue to that journalist and the newsite that unethically dug up his 'past' that has no relation to the controversy at hand.

I see we've now entered the character assassination phase of the conversation, not so subtly alluding to "maybe he deserved it and its ok now".

Took longer than I expected.

You quoted a post from many pages ago from a banned user that was posted the day after the story broke lol.

Hahaha, fuck this individual in particular.

Knowing what I know about airport security, I’m certainly not going to run back into a secured, federally restricted area at an airport flailing my arms and screaming like a banshee…because, you know, that just happens to be breaking a major federal Homeland Security law.

Yeah, I'd like to see what you'd be doing when you're traumatized and concussed.

Oh man, comedy gold [but tragically not even remotely funny how soulless this "person" is].

My favorite part?

When she compares being asked to take off her baby's socks because they looked like shoes, [and having to bite her tongue while doing so] - to this colossaly embarrassing example of customer service turned violent.

I didn't say that they did own United Airlines. I'm speaking about American products and services in general.
No one is defending the UAE here, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this strange hypocrisy that you seem to have.
Like I said it's all relative, do you really believe that how the UAE treats its migrant workers is a greater violation of human rights than Guantanamo Bay or the invasion of Iraq?
The UAE probably has a worse human rights record domestically (unless we include the likes of Guantanamo Bay and various torture camps as domestic), but on a global scale the US is easily one of the worst violators of human rights.
I don't hate anyone (I find it interesting you immediately turned to: "you just hate 'murica"), notice I actually have little problem using US products (nor do I have much issues using services from the UAE) I'm just pointing out the fact that you're quite happy to deplore the UAE for its various human rights issues, yet are seemingly quite happy to support the US government's own human rights violations.

Emirates has less issues in having to fly crews in, they just let the crews work longer.

https://thepointsguy.com/2015/01/insider-series-true-life-of-an-emirates-flight-attendant/

I remember a flight from SFO to Dubai that was diverted to Kuwait, where we sat on the ground for four hours; by the time we landed in Dubai, we had been on duty for over 24 hours, with only a three-hour break. At any European or U.S. carrier, the crew would have timed out and a relief crew would have been flown in, or the passengers would have been rebooked on other flights. It would have been inconvenient for the passengers, but surely a better alternative to having a fatigued crew trying to handle a potential emergency.

...

While I was working in the Middle East, the pressures of working within the ME3 became too much for two of my colleagues, both of whom took their own lives. Suicide is illegal in the U.A.E., so both deaths were reported as “accidental falls,” while their families were sent the associated bills for cleaning out the apartments and repatriating the bodies.

But this is a flawed comparison. Emirates Airline employs migrant workers themselves. There is a high probability that if I fly with their flights, I directly support the employers carrying out human rights abuses. On the other hand, I don't directly support Guantanamo Bay, or the Iraq war, by buying US products and services. I would say that is a pretty important distinction

I have no idea what sort of abuses Emirates Airlines does on its migrant workers and I've been living in Dubai for years now. Could you elaborate?

Emirates Airlines are not as bad as Qatar. They don't seem to force a curfew on their workers, like Qatar does. And they also do seem to treat their employees well in certain regards.

But there definitely are problems as well. They discriminate against HBTQ. They will tell employees to go on a diet if deemed to have gained too much weight. They will fire you if you get pregnant.

WSJ have written about it (behind paywall)

Miinh Phu Le’s cousin called her about the news shaking up Little Saigon: The man who’d been dragged off a United Airlines flight, seen in a viral video, was someone they all knew.

"I can't believe it's him,” Le recalled saying after viewing the footage, over and over, of Dr. David Dao. “And I can't believe they're treating him like that, bloodied and confused. I was so angry."

Dao is a familiar presence in Orange County’s Vietnamese cultural district, where he frequently performs traditional music, as well as his own compositions, at community concerts.

Talk of his online image — ashen and injured — has dominated discussions this week at bakeries where immigrants sipped iced coffee and in hair salons in between cuts and perms.

Dao, 69, had been heading home to Kentucky after celebrating at a reunion of medical school friends in California. During a stop in Chicago, officials forcibly removed him from his seat after he refused to leave the overbooked United flight.

Dung Nguyen, a leader in Kentucky's Vietnamese community, said he was stunned when he recognized Dao as the central figure in the viral video.

What? American Airliners keep booking seats even after the plane is full? What kind of practice is that?
Which is funny because if you don't show, you still pay. So they want to sell 110 tickets for a plane that seats 100 people. And only offer you 200 dollars. They are having their cake, eating it, and licking the plate. What other transportation service does that?

But you do, with the taxes you pay.

They took him half way and then beat him? I missed that in the original story. This just gets worse and worse the more you read

Keyword: Directly supporting

Supporting a company that itself engages in human rights abuses is directly supporting the perpetrators of human rights violations.

Supporting a company which doesn't itself engage in human rights abuses, but which pays taxes to a government that does, is only indirectly supporting the perpetrators of human rights abuses.

There is a distinction.
