Media Create Sales: Week 14, 2017 (Apr 03 - Apr 09)

Also with Minecraft releasing for Switch and potentially more Vita-audience titles getting Switch versions (Fate / Extella and Nights of Azure), are we seeing the final nails in the Vita's coffin?

Sony have been picking off Vita's corpse since 2015 (or was it TGS 2014? Whenever they announced Estival Versus and Ys VIII for PS4). Only makes sense for Nintendo to do the same with Switch.

Switch version of Minecraft is obviously going to take over the mantle of leggy version from Vita. I'm more interested to see how Nights of Azure 2 does. It's a good barometer to see how the audience is moving - I know the first game isn't on Switch, but it'll be useful for show how the "high end portable-loving otaku audience" is doing on the console so far.

Plus it's a very similar breakdown to the last game, which was PS3/PS4/Vita. PS3 was on the dying console and sold a nominal amount; PS4/Vita went toe-to-toe. Switch should step into the gap that Vita filled last time, with Vita being the PS3 version.

random thought but, I firmly believe the separate dock thing is one step further into the Switch's coming out as a handheld.

standalone switch tablet for $199.99 and its equivalent everywhere else is coming, question is when, Japan will absolutely devour that.

Just because Nintendo sells the stand alone dock at a 100 bucks doesn't mean they're going to drop the price of an eventual stand alone handheld by that much.

I don't think they will, and this is why: In the US Switch brings the added benefit of taking gaming on the go, in Japan its benefit could be seen as the opposite. Taking games on the go is the norm, however Switch is a console that can be docked and played on the big screen at times - something your smartphone and tablet are really bad at doing.

I think making a completely portable version is just about as likely as making a completely set-top version. However, the market will decide in the end, but this docking feature is what I think gives Nintendo the ability to sell it at a higher cost than most handhelds in Japan.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
MH5 will top 4 million. Spin offs and expansions obviously sell less.

Way too early to tell. 4m arent even guaranteed for Pokemon or Dragon Quest main titles at this point - lets see how MH5 looks first, when and on what systems its arriving.

'the fuck is wrong with July. The Snack World, Pikmin and Ever Oasis are releasing the same day, followed by Lady Layton and Splatoon 2 the next week, and then there's Dragon Quest XI the week after. Half of that is gonna bomb.

A game that is destined to bomb will bomb regardless the release date.

I know it's still early to say.. but looks like the Switch is en route to become Japan's favorite console. Quite an achievement.

No Pokemon Go... the fad is over :(

However, FE Heroes is there. Nintendo is saved! :)

PS4 was going to sell at least 30k every week for all year long?

I don't know. You should ask people who kept saying that in the last few weeks.

3DS
04/13 - Kirby Hunters Z (f2p download)
07/13 - The Snack World
07/13 - Ever Oasis
07/13 - Hey! Pikmin
07/20 - Layton Mystery Journey*
08/02 - The Great Ace Attorney 2

Snack World 3DS got dated? That's totally unexpected...

Its not just a console though, its also just as much a handheld, and the sucessor to the 3DS (well sell maybe 24-25 million units), so its not really that much of a surprise in that regards. I'm not going to downplay Nintendo's effort however, they seemed to have made an unit that is quite popular. That in itself is an achievement.

Well, it did sell in that area for quite some time, didnt it? Dont think its really that unexpected that it drops a bit below that, or that someone has claimed that it was really unlikely that it could drop below 30k.

I thought MH4 didn't even hit 4M and Pokemon sun and moon are struggling to reach that. But yeh Splatoon 2 likely isn't going to be in the same league unless it's a massive success (which is possible I guess).

Good to know Fate is done by Marvelous.

Switch is gonna have a hard time in May and June. Eek! Hopefully it can stay in the 30k mark.
Do you expect the Switch to be readily available in May and June? I think unless Nintendo significantly increases shipment it will continue being hard to find through those months.

Yeah, I've seen a few saying that just by doing better than WiiU or GC or Vita or PS4 (in Japan) would have be enough for Switch to be declared a success which is puzzling considering that neither of those consoles performed particularly well.
I suppose all these years of flagging sales in the japanese market (except 3DS) have skewed general perception on the low side.
Also I suppose not everyone know that we are out of 5 consecutive years of HW YTD decline in Japan which is a very worrisome signal.
Japanese dedicated videogame industry desperately need a strong console.
Japan wouldn't die in a night because since PS4 failed to take off with all software support behind it nothing else could make it. Last year's 3DS software and hardware sales showed the market was ready and alive for its successor.

MH4 (and MHX) had a big amount sold at digital because of shortage at retail. Shipments from Capcom are much closer to sales from Famitsu estimates.

You didn't hear about Sony's Splatoon killer for the Vita?

“From henceforth as well, we’re going to continuing concentrating on the PS Vita and increase the number of younger [PS Vita] users,” Morita said. “This year, we also plan on developing an IP that’s aimed at children.”

Can't wait for the Vita revival

Splatoon 2's video on Nintendo Japan is the top viewed video from the entire direct WW and Senran Kugura is in second place. Let that sink in, groping and squids is the top two things to come out of the entire direct in terms of content. Arms is still a big question mark in Japan, but once MK8D is out Nintendo will focus a lot more towards advertising it. I just hope they release a demo because if it's really fun to play that's the best way to generate hype around it.

Nintendo Japan:
Splatoon 2 - 410K
Senran Kagura Project - 396K
(I'm guessing majority non-Japanese ;)
Direct - 231K
Splatoon 2 Amiibos - 121K
Arms - 55K

Nintendo US:
Splatoon 2 - 199K
Nintendo 3DS Direct - 145K
Arms - 141K
Monopoly - 106K
Sine Mora EX - 100K

*Nintendo US for some reason broke down the video of the direct into two parts and the Switch part was uploaded a few hours ago.

Splat2n higher than either version of DQ when they first appeared aint it?

Good point. Has arms opened to preorders yet or do people just not care about it much?
New IP so it won't show up for a while(I hope it does well which I think it will)
plus Splatoon is a cultural phenomenon in Japan this new game will probably push Switch hardware into the high 100ks.

So DQ and Splatoon 2 and a bunch of other games announced - this has the potential to be the biggest summer sales period since 2009 when Dragon Quest IX launched and was accompanied by MH 3, Wii Sport Resort and Tomodachi Collection.

I forgot what I specifically said about Zelda's Western attach rate here but I remember I didn't expect near 90%. And it's over 100.

Crow eaten

Saint Titanfall
That attach rate is insane. I assume Japanese third parties will start to jump on board at a far quicker rate id it continues it's western success. Simply makes the most sense.

Hm, I wonder if Zelda's general success will help bring other open world games to Switch.

Global mobile revenue winners for Q1 2017 (which was up 53% from Q1 2016).

I boxed the Japanese games.

https://sensortower.com/blog/top-mobile-games-q1-2017

It's notable how much different Japanese and Western's top 10 titles are. Was talking to my friend, an owner of indie developer company and how medium titles are basically squished.

This is probably why Nintendo hesitated in Animal Crossing mobile. It doesn't have a spot there, unless it's a Pokemon GO breakout success.

Funnily, if we're disregarding IP popularity, the two Nintendo titles that matches the trending genre in Top 10 were Fire Emblem and... Advance Wars.

Problem with animal crossing is monetizing it. I don't see people spending 10,000 y in an attempt to get say summer Isabelle over the whale gacha targets in Fate.

So what you're saying is Advance Wars is going to be revived as a mobile game, got it.

Maybe I have a different understanding of the words "stabilize" and "dropping a bit below" than you.
