Silent Hill 2 behind-the-scenes mocap footage from Guy Cihi

Mellahan

Concerned about dinosaur erection.
Guy Cihi (James) posted some new/old mocap footage from Silent Hill 2. Guy says he's been looking for this footage for more 15 years. Spoilers:

It was lost in storage for more than 15 years. I only found it because two years ago I converted the old Hi8 family video tapes to DVDs in advance of my daughter's wedding. And even then, at just 3 min., it remained elusive until just about two weeks ago.

A timeless masterpiece and THE benchmark for subtle and smart storytelling even 16 years after release and 2 console generations later.

So cool to see the mocap technology for this game. The wires must have been a hassle.

Last line from Guy was incredible.

The music box melody will be in my head for the next ~3 months now as a result of watching the first few seconds of this.

Which is a very good thing because it's fucking great.

Fuck I adore this game.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Where does that scene happen in the game? I played through it the week it came out so I don't remember it at all.

Great stuff! It's astounding how much Guy (still) loved his role despite Konami's efforts to fuck him over.

While the history of mocap stuff doesn't particularly interest me, pieces of footage like this are invaluable for the preservation of video game history.

WOW THIS IS AMAZING!!! I've re-watched the official Making Of literally around 50 times now, with the blurred faces, but now seeing this so to say, uncut footage of unseen footage is fucking amazing!

At 5:30, the guy in the white shirt standing there is hilarious: "Shake, shake him!" "Hit him! Hit him!" LMAO

This is a piece of history... omg, this is really amazing. When Guy Cihi said his daughter started crying when the Laura actress hit "James", it made me laugh. Cihi's wife has made history with this footage, it's good to see the faces aren't blurred and just how strict the motion capture was back then.

OH GOD, and the end "I'm sorry, but now it's time to end this!" and then the song LMAO

was there someone else who didn't want to be revealed / isnt shown in said footage ?

and yea i own the Making of as well just really wish they wernt all a bunch of Faceless people in it :p

I'm so happy that even if Konami has pretty much forgotten about this game, people who have worked behind it--Jeremy Blaustein, Guy Cihi, Monica Morgan, Eddie's VO, Masahiro Ito, etc.--are perserving memories of this game's production and have talked about it so much in the past. Great to see such passion from these guys. I really do miss Team Silent and their vision on gaming.

The HD Collection is trash in every sense of the word and meaning. If you're looking into buying/playing SH2, I'd recommend the Platinum/Greatest Hits PS2 version, or just look at this thread.

Its pretty bad. I think the best way to play it is on actual PS2 hardware. If you cant do that and have a decent PC then you can use PCSX2. :)

If you have a pc PCSX2 plays the game flawlessly. Stear clear of the pc ports, despite community patches they are still not as good as the original ps2 version when it comes to the fog effects and soft shadows.

Really a shame that Konami had to treat the actors so poorly when the HD collection came out. I would love to see all the mocap footage they did.

Man, can someone please do a proper remaster of these great classic games? Any devs listening? Please, for the love of god.

Fascinating to see pre-ping pong ball motion capture. Love the bit about the daughter getting scared because she didn't know they were acting.

Great find. It's fantastic to see Guy as passionate as ever.

I love how he finds the footage while preparing for his daughters wedding and you see what I'm guessing is his 2 year old daughter in the footage. Priceless stuff.

I'd love to see more of this but, as with the final release game code it's probably been lost/destroyed over time.

The final retail code was lost by Konami. The HD remasters were cobbled together using unfinished code. I don't think we'll ever see a 100% remaster to match the quality of the original.

In a better world, Bluepoint Games would've been behind the effort of remastering the original Team Silent works on top of their Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. They've been perfecting the art of "reverse engineering" their re-releases by ripping finalized data straight from retail copies of the title over scrambling to obtain potentially incomplete source code from the developers themselves. I believe the company president even cited their approach was done to intentionally avoid disastrous efforts similar to what became of the Silent Hill HD Collection. Sadly, anything that didn't concern the stealth property was thrown under the tires by Konami for the sake of a quick buck like the Zone of the Enders treatment.

I miss Team Silent so much and makes me still made at Konami just as much as them canceling Silent Hills, screwing over the VA of SH2, and botching SH remasters.
Seriously, fuck Konami.

Yeah, kid yeller, translator of every shred of dialog and text in the SH2~4, VO director, mocap director, talent scout, etc.

;) btw. you look a bit like Jason Segel in the vid.

Only downside of working so close with the SH games must have been not getting scared to death playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time. Still one of the few times i said "NOPE" to a game after 4 hours till i replayed it over dozend years later. Buff military friend was the same. He managed only around 2 hours back then before selling it.

give this man a "yells at kids for money" tag!

Can't watch it. SH2 is one of those games where the less I see behind the curtain the better. Still cool that it's publicly available right now though.

EDIT: Big fan of the voice acting in those games BTW. SH2's dreamlike atmosphere was enhanced by the dialogue, SH3 had an emotive performance by the lead actress that I rarely see in games today, etc. I couldn't bring myself to play SH2 with the new voices, and kinda never got around to playing SH3 - the new vocal track was the straw on the camels back in that regard (even though they sounded fine from what I heard, just wasn't working for me). You rock!
