Rime Creative Director: "Reading Neogaf made me cry for two days"

Can we get some context? As far as I know most people were just wondering wtf was going on with the game...

It was MIA for years after E3 and then Sony dropped it, only for it to pop back up again.

Haven't really seen anything on gaf that outright bashes them.

edit: Most posts I saw on Gaf were just curious what was going on with the game and people were skeptical once Sony dropped em.

NeoGAF is one of the most hyperbolic forums i've ever seen.

And just to clarify, there's a difference between the kind of mindless driveby comments you get from a forum like GameFAQs, and the somewhat calculated and deliberate hatred you get from a place like this where people genuinely believe what they're typing is objective.

I don't know which one is worst honestly, but there it is lol

Not gonna say that this forum isn't overreacting, but what was he expecting when he openly lied about the state of his pretty hyped game.

Also what did he expect from the Internet.

Exactly. Dude was shifty as hell, I think the skepticism was well-earned

Ha!

I dont know which forums he was reading as I wasn't too interested in the game, but I thought people were still kinda hyped for this game last I checked?

Were we uncharacteristically mean to Rime or something? GAF is very put up or shut up. Just because something exists doesn't mean it deserves praise. Rime might be awesome. It might be crap. Some people are worried it could be crap. That's the way it is. They can prove its us wrong, but should not take it personally.

Especially considering the kind of sketchy beginnings, it seems some were right to be skeptical. But again, maybe it'll be great. That's not on GAF, it's on them.

GAF along with everywhere else on the internet can be pretty cruel at times. However, they didn't do themselves any favors when they misrepresented the game with a CGI cut-scene that was seemingly gameplay and then Sony ditching the entire project.

I'm not going to apologize for failures on their part.

You'd think that all of the "This is the real Last Guardian" like comments would have balanced out the negative ones.

Man, I'm really interested in what comments in particular were so harsh as to have that impact.

Reminds me of Phil Fish.... Why do people Even Care about what people say online? Dont let some Trolls bring you Down... Because of this We will never See FEZ 2 and because of this We almost would never See RIME.

Only because of some stupid Trolls... Dont Listen to those Trolls. Dont let them bring you Down :(

Lol i say suck it up and take it as constructive criticism. Im still gonna support this game on the Switch. Not everyone is going to love everything you create.

Yeah but constructive criticism doesn't tend to be hateful/spiteful. I don't think they were under illusions that not everyone would like it but apparently some stuff was super toxic.

Yes he is overreacting, but neogaf is also very toxic and hateful about many games/developers.

True, but I think it passes some people by because by and large the mods do a pretty good job at containing/banning/deleting etc. Like there would be people in a post-release FFXV thread saying they were incredibly disappointing/the biggest disappointment in gaming for them, but nothing...cruel, or vile. in particular.

Although, tbf, if you try to imagine working on a game for X number of years, then go online and see people go from excited, to flippant, to not caring, to resentful etc it could be incredibly draining, very quickly.

Bummer. I haven't followed the development of this game, but I've been very impressed every time I've seen footage of it. Looking forward to it finally releasing.

GAF can be negative, but overall is a lot nicer than stuff like Reddit or Twitter and Facebook comments, which tend only to focus on complaints and rage rather than nuanced descriptions of why they don't like something.

I am pretty sure i made Neil Druckmann cry a few times over Uncharted 4.

But that's ok, he made Amy cry after forcing her out.

This was the game that was originally published by Sony and changed publishers right? I think there was the predictable meltdown from Sony diehards at that point which is probably a source of some of this.

If GAF is enough to make him want to cry he should stay away from pretty much every other game forum. GAF is actually pretty nice compared to /v/ or GameFAQs for example.

I certainly feel bad for him, but I'm sure he understands (or at least I hope he understands) that it looked really fucking bad for his game for a while and no one knew what was going on. People on Gaf were being hyperbolic for calling it a scam and calling him and the people he worked with con-artists, but they probably should've been more open about what was going on with their game and their agreement with Sony that got terminated.

I began to understand that maybe people can love something so much that they can hate it.

What is this supposed to mean?

Talking about Rime or about Deadlight here? Because they've only released one mediocre game so far.

You can't be serious? We could use that logic for every game ever. Most games get delayed nowadays.

Not completely serious, but you can easily point to No Man's Sky as a game that came out, but people felt scammed by.

Saying you're making a game inspired by the likes of Ico takes some big cajones. It sets expectations to a certain level; and it remains to be seen if this game will meet or surpass those expectations.
