Rime Creative Director: "Reading Neogaf made me cry for two days"

Not gonna say that this forum isn't overreacting, but what was he expecting when he openly lied about the state of his pretty hyped game.

Also what did he expect from the Internet.

What's this tho? The only thing I know is the game disappeared for a while, and then it resurfaced no longer tied to Sony.

Love GAF, but if I'm being honest if I was a game dev I would totally avoid any Thread / Topic here that had anything to do with games I worked on. The stress seems like it would be way too immense considering some of the stuff that gets said on the regular.

There's a reason far less devs still post here compared to previous years.

Reminds me:

No he is not. People called his hard work a scam because their favorite Company/Tribe dropped the publishing rights for the game.
Can we please not? Like, there was more to that mess than "People is mad that Sony dropped them"

People got REALLY mad at them because of this:
All this info comes from a source very close to the studio.

First of all, I was told that the reveal trailer was all cinematic. It was faked to mimic gameplay, assets, etc. from a real game but 0% of the game was implemented.

So the real challenge for the studio was to put that vision into the final game. And apparently this has been impossible to achieve.

This words are a direct quote from my source about this news and the studio itself (it contains his personal opinion):

"Sony required about one month ago the DEV KITs to be returned and canceled the fundings into Tequila Works, due of the game had no-sense. Basically there wasn't a game.

This is a consecuence of the bad studio direction, basically Raul Rubio thinks that he is the next Tim Schafer. The truth is that Raul was fired from MercurySteam. The people from MercurySteam speak really bad about him (the main critics are: he has no idea about games, technology and he has crazy ideas without sense). If you add that his wife is the chairman of Tequila Works and looking for info about her you can find this:

http://www.notariado.org/liferay/we...4233524_ELIG_NOT_PARAM_SITUACION=AC&FLAG=MAIL

You could see that she is public notary in Spain. She hasn't any background making games. The results are, that Rime has no publisher and it is not cancelled due of they got public spanish founds to develop games:

http://www.minetur.gob.es/PortalAyu...nts/Listado_PropuestaProvisionalConcesion.pdf

If you take a look into their website and you compare the hellworkers list with the original team from Deadlight , only a couple guys remains from the original team. If all the team has left the studio, you must think that something wrong there is into the top of the company."

I'm a bit sad to be honest since i was there in the first days of the studio (not working).

And there were other reports about the game until that moment being just smoke and mirros kind of thing.

So yeah.

Honestly, it's not a problem relegated to neogaf. People forget too easily that everyone else they talk to on the internet is, well, a person. I know I forget it often too.

If GAF got to them that hard over Rime, hopefully they don't find a job at Ubisoft.

It still blows my mind how vitriolic some of the posts were about Ghost Recon: Wildlands being a popular seller.

Honestly, it's not a problem relegated to neogaf. People forget too easily that everyone else they talk to on the internet is, well, a person. I know I forget it often too.

This is true, but people post some pretty horrid garbage using their real Facebook profiles now, so if that's not going to stop them nothing well.

And NeoGAF is largely a positive website that encourages discussion and not everybody is gonna like the same thing.

No not really and a chunk of the problem comes from the fact that people actually believe this and then come to spew whatever comes to their head without second thought. NeoGAF is still huge on console wars and more often than not do not really encourage discussion

I mean it's good to listen to criticism for your work but the dev should really hold posts on a forum in less regard.

Hope the game turns out fine so we can all be happy.

GAF can be negative, but overall is a lot nicer than stuff like Reddit or Twitter and Facebook comments, which tend only to focus on complaints and rage rather than nuanced descriptions of why they don't like something.

Yeah, that's true. I feel GAF gets riled up easily when the shit hits the fan which is probably hard to read for a dev. It's easy to over analyse and want answers when you have such a keen interest in gaming. Overall, the mods and access to GAF keep it a decent place of discussion with a few lemons going too far on occasions. I love GAF.

Maybe some did, but people supposedly in the know said time and again that there was no game and that he ran the company in some weird ways.

Were we uncharacteristically mean to Rime or something? GAF is very put up or shut up. Just because something exists doesn't mean it deserves praise. Rime might be awesome. It might be crap. Some people are worried it could be crap. That's the way it is. They can prove its us wrong, but should not take it personally.

Especially considering the kind of sketchy beginnings, it seems some were right to be skeptical. But again, maybe it'll be great. That's not on GAF, it's on them.

Once Sony dropped Rime (because they're backing off of indie publishing efforts in general--see Edith Finch and other indies they dropped as well), a lot of Sony fans lost their shit and were like "hah, it's terrible, it has to be terrible, no way Sony would drop a good game."

At the same time, I mean... Tequila Works' last game was one of the worst games I've ever played?

Then again, I've played Rime now, and... Rime seems pretty darn great. If anything, it's the best turnaround I've ever seen for a studio.

It was quite some time ago so I don't remember the full details, but someone close to the studio explained how everything we saw so far was smoke and mirrors, there wasn't a real game being developped and that's why Sony dropped the support.

The fact that they dodge the question and refuse to answer everytime someone ask them what happened these last three years makes me think that it's probably true.

This was the game that was originally published by Sony and changed publishers right? I think there was the predictable meltdown from Sony diehards at that point which is probably a source of some of this.

Yes, it was when Sony abandoned the project.
Someone from here posted "insiders info" that the game is fake, that it doesn't even exist and that what they showed is basically a cartoon and not someone playing the game. And as usual ppl here went crazy, posting crazy stuff. Basically what happens most of the time here, because GAF knows best. XD

As I said in the other thread, and even if I agree that some gaffers were too harsh with the Rime debate, I find it weird that he targets GAF when the rumors came from spanish forum Vandal, and shit dropped the fan there too (and all other forums, not just Gaf).

NeoGAF is one of the most hyperbolic forums i've ever seen.

And just to clarify, there's a difference between the kind of mindless driveby comments you get from a forum like GameFAQs, and the somewhat calculated and deliberate hatred you get from a place like this where people genuinely believe what they're typing is objective.

I don't know which one is worst honestly, but there it is lol

No, just no. NeoGAF can be totally hyperbolic and dumb about gaming related shit, but atleast people here respect woman or minorities, for putting an example. GameFAQs is just a cesspool that doesn't respect anything. It goes way beyond on having shit opinions on games.

neogaf is often an echo chamber of whatever you feed it.

This is pretty much any forum on internet though, not just GAF.

Not gonna say that this forum isn't overreacting, but what was he expecting when he openly lied about the state of his pretty hyped game.

Also what did he expect from the Internet.

maybe the fact that it's just a piece of entertainment and stop taking it so seriously. People on GAF tend to get very personal very quick.

If my work was consistently criticised by strangers that would probably affect me too

"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."

I used to work in the mod scene of both BF1942 and BF2 and the entitlement, jumped-up wank-stainery and general enormous volume of self confidence in the face of overwhelming personal ignorance by people who wanted the moon on a stick never ceased to amaze me. We worked hours, hours, hours (for free!) to give people stuff and almost all they ever did was shit on it. Now, these games aren't free but up until the point it comes out you haven't spent anything on it and it's not kick started. You think the studio is a "scam" and the game doesn't exist? Great, thanks for illuminating us, it would be such a horror if every thought that wanders, lost and idle, through your mind were to stay there.

People were rightfully pissed (disappointed) that they made up a whole game (or the trailers at least). I don't remember it getting personal or anything.

It's true, even people here can be assholes, even if they consider themselves fans. Every time someone from Giant Bomb posts on the community thread it's usually to stamp out accusatory posts.

I think online communities, including neogaf, go way too far sometimes when it comes to hating on devs. Criticism is fine, but people get way too mean about it most of the time. Usually there's least an understandable reason behind something, but threads have a tendency to dogpile on a game or developer, and the criticisms become personal insults and attacks. It gets worse when people become emboldened after noticing that it's socially acceptable to be slightly mean to something, because that's when people start spamming the really mean shit everywhere they can.

The whole Dark Souls 2 B-team thing still really rubs me the wrong way. Is it a weaker game compared to the other games in the series? Yeah, IMO it is in many ways. But the shitting on the devs that made it goes way too far. It started with "Miyazaki wasn't directly involved it" then went to "it's the B-team" and then just went downhill from there. Somehow that whole thing eventually snowballed until calling the DS2 team a bunch of incompetent morons became a normal thing for a while around here, and that is totally not fair to those people at all. If I worked on DS2, I'd be fucking miserable if I saw any of those threads.

I thought the B Team thing originated on GameFAQs? But yeah. You still see it on some Souls threads and its like...but a lot of the team who worked on DS2 helped finish up Bloodborne and formed some of the main team behind DS3. And the people who directed DS2 in the end, and the DLCs, were making DS3 before Miyazaki came on board...and its not like Miyazaki was sole director. You'd probably have the same issue if Kojima Productions @ Konami had ever had a 2 or 3 team system with whatever Kojima directed being considered "good" etc.

When you put your life into something critcism is emotional in a way that's impossible to qualify. If your reading this dood, make the game. People are excited, some people won't be. But weather it's great or even terrible it's an accomplishment to have a full game finished no one can take that away from you and if you love your game and some others do too, that's what matters

Lol pretty nice my ass most sites think this one needs to be bombed from existence. Not my own words lol

That's more for how it goes really hard in favor of social justice stuff. I haven't seen anyone want it dead because it's mean.

I mean, there was a point when it seemed like a scam haha. You're an artist, you know? Part of the job is letting your art speak for itself

Honestly, this isn't just a GAF thing, it's an internet thing.

But get back to me when you want to cry about hateful comments made towards people because of issues rather than game design. A little bit of an overreaction, imo.

Dunno who this is or what game this is.

But I understand his point of view.

As a whole, we are so negative it's embarrassing. Absolutly trashing things that are the least bit dissapointing, then just downright destroying those who out so much work into them.

It's the one thing about this hobby I would change. The attitude problem we have, that coincides with "it's the goat" or "it's fucking garbage" with no in-between.

I'm pretty sure Druckmann browses gaf as well even calling it somewhat an addiction if I recall. Probably planning domination of the site or something.

If I was a dev, I sure wouldn't read GAF either, honestly.

I get this but still there can be some constructive criticism in the midst of the craziness.

I love NeoGaf and it's my favorite website of all time...

But still....

This is the INTERNET... you gotta have strong skin and remember that almost everybody on the Internet is anonymous and that the tone of a comment can be totally weird and bizarre and harsh as hell sometimes.

And NeoGAF is largely a positive website that encourages discussion and not everybody is gonna like the same thing.

Its hard but I agree with this. I rarely engage with folks on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. because its folks I know in real life.

But yea gotta have thicker skin. GAF isnt that bad because its usually easy to tell the legit complaints, concerns. Compare that to Youtube or Yahoo comment sections. I rarely read them these days.

Lol pretty nice my ass most sites think this one needs to be bombed from existence. Not my own words lol

Most of the hate comes from gators and "MUH FREE SPEECH" because it's tightly moderated, and a lot of people here aren't racist, sexist, homophobic shitlords.
