Nintendo business meeting for new products this morning in Japan. Main titles presented to retailers and gathered attention were basically DQ and everything else Switch.

DQXI
Splatoon 2
Arms
Seiken Densetsu Collection

I'd be interested in what they said about Seiken Densetsu Collection.

The Nintendo exclusivity money hat for Monster Hunter was supposed to have ended like 3 years ago, that's enough time to make a game for the ground up.

Everything is matching up.

Delusions.

Are they really worth much?

Like let's take Street Fighter for example.

In its first 9 months on the market, it shipped 1.5 million copies.
I don't think Street Fighter V is a fair example considering that everyone acknowledges that Capcom badly botched the launch by releasing a barebones product for full price aimed solely at the tournament scene. Nintendo has taken the complete opposite tact with Smash, loading every single release with tons and tons of content.

I would look at that 1.5 million as the absolute floor for the Street Fighter franchise, the hardcore die FGC traditionalists who will buy for the name and core gameplay alone, no questions asked.

Despite Capcom's bumbling, Street Fighter remains a brand with prestige and a loyal following. It would absolutely attract new users to the Switch. With Street Fighter, Marvel VS, and Smash under their belt (and hopefully ARMS) Nintendo will essentially dominate the mainstream FGC.

Yeah, but like, games people care about recover through price promotion and updates, whereas Street Fighter V isn't.

Let's compare to H1Z1 for example: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1352685

I would need to be convinced it attracts people that don't already buy the system for Smash, ARMS, or any other game, and does so at a rate to justify $1 billion instead of just making a $100 million fighting game or running more ads or whatever.

There's very little overlap between the Smash and Street Fighter FGC fanbases. Like, I can't think of a single successful crossover player.

The games don't play anything alike and built their audiences on different systems at different times.

I feel like Sony needs a new portable hardware release
Sales are slowing down in Japan right now
Sony son't care too much about Japan and the Vita wasn't a success in the first place not even in Japan why would they jump into that mess a second time. That's why everything has transitioned to the PS4.

Okay so that's $1 billion for 5000 competitive Street Fighter players and their 50,000 fans?

Why not just send them free Switches. Way cheaper.

For the 1.5 million Street Fighter loyalists who care about the game on some competitive level.

And that's to say nothing about the value of Monster Hunter for a Japanese handheld manufacturer, or Resident Evil.

Really? We are not reading the same threads then

The "all games should be on switch" trend ended after the January reveal.

Wereach everybody saw almost zero third parties on board.

And even those trying to justify the switch ports aren't claiming that the port will actually coming but that "should"

It is pretty different from claiming 8n an adamant way that specific games will never be considered for the console imho and that are impossible to be ported

Monster hunter is worthwhile but if the mismanage it, it could probably be gotten for cheap same with resident evil. Street fighter isn't particularly strong though I'm not sure why any platform holder would care too much about it unless they completely lack fighting games on their console. Hardly a system seller. Probably the only system selling IP they have right now is MH.

What do the companies in question even need Monster Hunter for?

One already gets the game and Japan is a largely irrelevant market for the other.

Consider all the companies these two have passed up acquiring as well.

It's more about Capcom needing to expand one of their two last relevant brand.

They're basically throwing in the towel on that front and going in on mobile instead.

And let it bomb like the vita.

Ok I know 5 million for a portable in Japan still is a bomb

but my take is Sony really has a chance to take mobile gaming forward if they bothered trying.

If Nintendo can release a 720P portable, I had my expectations on Sony going full 1080P portable in Japan.

If they really allow Nintendo to stay alone with the Switch hybrid for even a full year all of the niche stuff that Vita got will get HD Rumble ports and the fanbase will move to a new platform

I just feel it is a mistake if Sony does not stay visible in the portable space. Can't afford to allow Japan to love the hybrid platform from just one company. If Switch 2 starts to challenge PS4 Pro docked specs-wise it could eat up a lot of PS5s Japanese sales.

So for the long term it is not wise to allow Nintendo's hybrid to be the lone portable.

Anyway Media Create threads won't be the same without competition. Maybe you guys just like the Pacman charts

Oh, no, I'm not talking about Monster Hunter going multiplatform. That's the logical decision for Capcom and will most likely happen.

I'm talking about a console vendor spending $1.2 billion for Capcom, which is the biggest waste of money possible.

Sony wants all those games to move to the PS4 which is exactly what's happening. They're not losing anything. As far as opportunity cost goes it's a waste of time. That 5 million could be gotten far easier just by focusing on the PS4.

That is one way of looking at it, at the end of the day Sony does a great job supporting one platform they could continue to cut deals and do well. I am just looking at Japan sales here so maybe it is true that Sony won't tailor their moves based on Japan alone.

I can see Nintendo hurting the Switch by continuing a new 3DS line and having to focus on 2 platforms while Sony only has to deal with 1.

It's not really anything to with that. Sony only had to maintain Vita for the sake of their third party publishers but those publishers have all moved over to PS4 now. Sony isn't really losing anything by not having a handheld at this point.

I could see the manufacturers (and other publishers) fighting for scraps if Capcom was shutting down (like when THQ died and IP bundles were up for sale), but outside of that...
Nintendo has always been for going for developers first instead of studios when they could, Sony goes for strategic big names when needed (esports with SFV, Kojima, etc) but only temporarily, MS has varied strategies over the years but prefer to not have any studios as well, etc.

It's a lot more likely we'd see them fuse with another publisher later on instead, like Sega/Atlus, Koei-Tecmo, Square-Enix, Bandai-Namco, etc.

That said, I still think their IPs are still really valuable, just not for more than temporary exclusive contracts.

Nah i think once it's apparent the switch isn't a launch period flash in the pan, going forward the switch (potentially family) will be all they have.

Lordkano did a good thread recently showing how most major Nintendo dev teams have left the 3ds. Any upcoming games (pikmin etc)are not from Nintendo themselves, they're all in on Switch.

Capcom should bring back the Megaman Battle Network games and work on reviving that IP as a whole, I think there is a lot of value being missed there.

No we don't. Tell me how much has MH sold in the west on a console Full stop? You'll have to look at wii sales for that. How many has it's sold in the west on a PS4 console, scratch that Playstation anything console? We know jack shit about the franchises strength on a PlayStation console, literally nothing. The highest MH anything has sold in the west is around a million.

Its almost like you didn't read the rest of my post:

You're arguments are poor. With such logic you can claim a lot of predictions to have no hold as nothing similar has happened prior. What I've shown is how new IP or even old ones, have achieved considerable success on PS4. Several of these are ARPGs. That, alongside PS4's undeniably large userbase overseas, from a company who says it makes most of its money overseas, is the precedent if a PS4 MH5 was ever going to happen.

One doesn't need to have a released a MH on PS4 to make some sort of gauge on the limits of a MH on PS4.

Personally I'm most looking forward to Capcom's next fiscal call where they try to explain away how all three of their flagship games underperformed expectations.

Last time I checked, RE7 was doing well. Whats the other two? MHXX and DR4? I mean neither have much consequence considering one was a spin off and the other was a franchise thats been on the wayside since the dev change.

As long as RE and MH stay in good health (which they seem to be) I don't think Capcom is in much trouble.

The Switch will never be able to make the PS4 obsolete. Sure its sales will dwarf it, it may even cause a loss of PS4 sales, but its clear Sony are focusing on the global picture here, and as such acquiring Japanese third party support is key. PS4 has no competition in such regards.

Its why nearly every Switch port that is desired is a PS4 game: it receives the lionshare of Japanese third party support. We've already talked about how Japanese pubs are looking at overseas sales with greater focus as well.

I don't think there is the problem with focusing on PS4, but shrinking console space in japan. PS4 is the lone console machine in the country rightnow and it only sale 5m so far. That is like 1/4 of its predecessor. Do you imagine how many could PS5 sale with most of the developer has gone indie / mobile / or just produce AA game. NSW is eating that pie, it is hybrid that take both console and handheld audience, it has good enough spec to let player enjoy modern game, while still cheap enough not to burn the developer like AAA console game. With Nintendo going full front on NSW, it will sell shit load of the machine, and that is just a matter of time before 3rd party join force due to reason above. Up until now you should have known already that japanese gamer don't care too much about graphic. So it is very risky if Sony only want to focus on console and completely abandon handheld/portable device. Unless they don't care about Japan anymore.

Maybe it was because of Wii U's failure they weren't able to justify the costs despite them apparently having a lot to spend IIRC.

Now if this was the Wii era, THEN they likely would've. For instance, maybe they wouldn't have bought Monolith Soft if they only became available during the Wii U era.

Honestly, I think that would of been kinda shit for Persona's fanbase, which is mostly on Playstation.

"Wanna buy the newest mainline Persona game? Well sorry fucka, you gotta buy a Nintendo console for that shit now lol"

how does the prediction league work?

MK8 is that the total for 28 days worth of sales?

I think Mario will have a higher attach rate than Zelda has in the US

3DS and Wii had opposite courses. When the one started rising the other started falling. Switch looks to have a middle course between these 2 so far.

RE7 has been profitable, but it's going to miss its mark or barely make it. Usually you'd want your flagship title to pass expectations with ease and do better than the estimated. Going by the RE6 reports, their 4 million units for RE7 might be sold in hand and not shipped (they clarified that in some of their older reports). Which in that case RE7 is doing even less since it's only shipped 3 million.

Still it was profitable and they did say RE8 is already coming. But I wouldn't be surprised if big changes are in store again for the series. They got the critical reception back, they just need the better sales now.

It's predictions for sales in may (so not including the mk8d launch weekend sales as that's in April).

ouch that is a tough one

launch week I could do but first full month is kinda hard to predict

I wonder if everyone who gave MK8 the legs it had on Wii U will upgrade to Switch

I think this is less of a "Capcom is in serious trouble." issue and more of a "Capcom has been having lame fiscal performances for a while now and then fumbled on one of their best potential years." issue, so investors are going to demand they explain how they're going to improve and how things are going to be different going forward.

Capcom knows this though and will likely have a lot to talk about. They put a pretty self damning interview in their annual report, and talked about how they had to be realistic about the issues they're facing, so there's some good potential for news here.
