New Yakuza in the works, series general director confirms

Gematsu link.

A new Yakuza title is in the works, series general director Toshihiro Nagoshi confirmed during the Famitsu Awards 2016.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life won an Excellence Award from the publication, and during the creator interview with Nagoshi, Famitsu editor-in-chief Katsuhiko Hayashi asked about the next entry in the series. Here’s what Nagoshi had to say:
As long as Yakuza 6 is labeled “the final chapter of Kazuma Kiryu,” we won’t be saying anything like, “just kidding!”
One of the keywords is that I want to create a new Yakuza.
I don’t think it’s necessary to narrow it down to a single title. It may be multiple titles.
We created the Dragon Engine with Yakuza 6, but the game engine itself will be completed with the development of a second or third title.
I’m already working on the next title. In the not too distant future… I think there will be an opportunity to talk about the next game’s development in a relatively early stage.

Yesssss!

I'm glad Kazuma won't be the protagonist anymore. Great guy, but he's been through a ludicrous amount of drama by this point, and it's gotten a little silly. Time to pass the torch to some younger blood.

Is Yakuza 6 coming to Europe?

Yes. It was confirmed at PSX last year that the game is being localised for Western territories.

Hopefully localized and also a game that shifts the formula quite a while. Yakuza games can get repetitive if they keep churning out the same one after another.

Here's hoping it's Kiwami 2. It would be nice to get a remake of what is probably the strongest Yakuza game story.

Though if they want to do a spin off title I'm down. Just any Yakuza and I'll be down. Hell if you want to go make a non-Yakuza I'm down. Just make something.

I will miss Kazuma a lot, but it's good that they're finally moving on with another character.

Also, Kiwami 2, Sega, please!

But without Kiryu would I even want to play it? :,(

Still excited to hear more projects from RGG Studio, hopefully they can work on a new IP next.

EDIT: Oh I forgot, yes down for Kiwami 2 with best rival in the series.

I wonder if this potentially would be Switch exclusive since Nagoshi showed up at that Nintendo conference back in January. I'll be there say 1 either way since I always enjoyed the series.

Really interested in Yakuza since I've been watching GB playthrough 0.

Fantastic overall game. Really into the story, the silly stories can be good and the fighting looks fun. I didn't give it enough credit before, assumed it was a Shenmue wannabe, but this takes it further than they ever did and have some great serious moments too.

Hopefully the next one I'll play myself.

Nice, wonder what it'll be. Black Panther was a good spinoff for example, unlike Of the dead.
Let's go with one with Goro as protagonist lol.

Truly new or is Yakuza 2 getting the Kiwami treatment next?

They said in the past they wanted to do Kiwami for other games, this sounds like an entirely new title.

Doubt it, but at least this time we'd be able to show Sega there's an interest thanks to the lack of region locking, unlike Yakuza 1+2 HD WiiU that never left Japan...

Hopefully it's a significant shake-up because as great as Yakuza is, and it's REALLY great, they've been working on this series for well over a decade now and there's what, 10 of them? I'd like to see what else this team is capable of.

You say that now but when the new protagonist shows up in their own game, you'll be comparing him/her to Kiryu and wanting him back!

Please leave out the rhythm based music gameplay to a minimum, as refreshing as it can be for some time I'd rather get back to the crux of the matter which is literally kicking ass!

it has nothing to do with Yakuza games. Nagoshi is the Chief Creative Officer and Corporate Director at SEGA Games.

You know where he was?
Xbox One Japanese press conference.

He has a charge in SEGA, not only "Yakuza producer".

:lol

The game showing up on the Switch at all would be surprising.

Yakuza 2 seems to be the most dated game of the series in terms of mechanics now (every other game adopted 3's more "open-world" seamlessness to combat) so I would be down with that being remade.

I don't quite understand how they can continue the series without Kiryu. He is "Yakuza"..I mean he is like Snake. You can't have Metal Gear Solid without Snake..in the same way you can't have a Yakuza game without Kiryu.

I know his story has ended with Yakuza 6, but they can go even before Yakuza 0. Show how he became a Yakuza. There is so much scope but without Kiryu, I really dont know I will be able to invest in this series.

I mean other than rebooting the series with new characters what will the next Yakuza be like? Will they make Akiyama the lead? Besides Kiryu, Majima and to an extent Akiyama, nobody has the "Yakuza" attitude.

Don't bank on it. Yakuza is a franchise that has been on PS platforms for more than a decade, they won't make the newest installment Switch exclusive.

I'd be down for:

- Yakuza 2 Kiwami
- Yakuza 7 with Akiyama as protagonist
- Yakuza -1 starring Kazama back in the '60s and '70s where he's just hardcore murdering guys left and right
- Another period piece with swords and stuff
- Literally anything these people make, God I love Yakuza

How many Yakuza games are at this point? I feel like there are 3 separate Yakuza games talked about at all times

  • Yakuza 1 (Kiwami is a remake of 1)
  • Yakuza 2
  • Yakuza: Kenzan (samurai themed spinoff, never got localized)
  • Yakuza 3
  • Yakuza 4
  • Yakuza: Dead Souls (Zombie shooter spin-off)
  • Yakuza 5
  • Yakuza: Ishin (Another samurai themed spinoff, never got localized either)
  • Yakuza 0 (Prequel to the entire series)
  • Yakuza 6
  • New Yakuza coming now!!

Though that's just the mainline games, there was also a PSP game.

Honestly the series lost a lot of heat when they released that awful zombie game here in NA. If they didn't bother with that spin off, and we wouldn't have had to wait so long for Yakuza 5 and the series would've maintained or grown in popularity in the west instead of the fans having to prove their loyalty and pushing for a localization for 5 for so long.

Best wishes.

Sweet!

Still think they should take my idea of doing historical recreation in Meiji era

Kenzan and Ishin followed different time periods of the warring states era.

They should flash forward to the imperial times where only officers were allowed to carry swords

If this isn't Kiwami 2 and is instead Yakuza 7. I'd like to see them change the formula up a bit. Nothing crazy, but playing Yakuza 0 i'd like to see it being a little less stiff. More openness to the moves and upgrades off the top of my head.

I think a new protag is what the series needs. Even with going multi character I felt like Kiryu was the least interesting part of the stories. He was basically just the thing to link games together.

More likely Scorpio exclusive because... reasons I dunno.
