Famitsu picks Pokémon Sun/Moon as their 2016 GOTY

I really don't see what's so appealing about Pokemon. I am 37 years old and I have been gaming all my life. I heard about all the rage about Pokemon and I tried Pokemon Y a few years ago. It was boring, lacked direction, and very repetitive. I just don't see what the appeal is? What am I missing GAF?
Multiplayer is a big part of it, tho that pretty much requires you going through the rather basic singleplayer RPG for your Pokemon to be at a good enough level and evolution form.

For what's it worth I didn't think Pokemon X/Y's singleplayer was all that great either, but I really enjoyed Sun/Moon. Better characters and story in that one.

What are you talking about? Sun and Moon easily have the best campaign of any Pokémon game. And it's not slow, just go away and replay some of the older ones and you will see.
Almost every time you walk to the next objective marker it stops to play a cutscene, and there are a ton of objective markers. It's a far slower game then most of the older Pokemon games, especially Gen 1 and 2.

Yeah, S/M definitely has pacing issues. The first island was especially bad. Easily the slowest start in the main series.

Take away features from previous games, add an insane amount of game stopping citizens that only worsen the boring story with trash dialogue and vapid characters, and you got yourself a Famitsu GOTY.

Disclaimer: I'm only two or three hours in I don't like it very much, if at all.
I liked the story and characters, and it gets better later on, but going through the first 2 islands (which took me about 20 hours) was probably my worst experience with the series. Just for that I could never say it was an excellent game, even though I loved the second half.

I can see why it's an easy pick. Don't agree with it at all, of course. S/M is actually one of the most disappointing Pokemon games I've played, and I've played basically everything from the main series. It's a technical mess with some questionable decisions like the removal of the PSS, putting the national dex behind a paywall, and the way the call for help system was implemented.
It's a good game with a ton of questionable decisions. No DexNav, extreme hand-holding, cutscenes every 5 minutes, things like that.

"You can't pass, my Stoutland is searching for items." Seriously? And yes, I remember the thirsty guards in RBY and that was silly too, but it only happened once in the entire game (though you could reach this block from a bunch of different cities). In SM, this happened no less than 3 times in the same town, and something similar had happened before and would keep happening afterwards. I really hated the forced linearity, because the map had several roads that made the world rather open, but the game didn't let you explore them until you cleared the required story sections first.

Yeah, to be fair, the beginning of Sun/Moon is pretty bad about tutorials and constant stop-and-go action. Once it gets going though, it's brilliant.

Would anyone here that played both Pokemon Sun/Moon and Persona 5 pick Pokemon as the better game?
I can play Pokemon with my little brothers and with other friends when we gather or on-line when we get a chance (there is a reason I have an obscene amount of hours poured into it)

So yeah.

I do love Persona too tho, but the multiplayer and social aspect really puts Pokemon above most JRPG franchises I play.

I could definitely see it, Pokémon Sun and Moon are some of the best entries in the series. Plus Pokémon has the whole online/competitive aspect, if you are big into that then it makes sense, Persona doesn't offer an experience like that.

While the frist island has bad pacing, the second and third islands are the best absolutely makes up for it.

Pokemon has the whole social aspect that makes it more enjoyable for me. And I like Pokemon battle system more too.

You mean instead of rushing through all the fall releases in 2 months, they actually take their time to play through them and pick a winner in April? Wish more companies did this.

I would have had Armed Blue Gunvolt Sou as GOTY.

Aqua and Tetsuya Nomura would have won awards had FF XV not getting KH 2.8 delayed, but they'll get it this year.

Did Famitsu just call Fumito Ueda a 'rookie'?

Ueda: "They're not gonna ROOK me."

This was the only Pokémon game I straight up couldn't force myself to finish. They fucked up enormously in pretty much all fronts, there is not a single aspect of it I can say that improved anything for the franchise.

They're roughly even so far. P5 has a lot of tedious shit in its dungeons, terrible issues concerning female and LGBT characters, and a C-tier translation, but the gameplay loop if fusing monsters, developing relationships with allies and managing your days efficiently is still incredible.

SuMo's quest is the best yet, but the highs being so high help smooth over some awkward pacing early doors. It's also a tricky Pokemon game for once, which is welcome. And the presentation is top-notch, full of character and style... but not to the extent of P5's style.

Both are great and exciting and feel fresh despite being utterly true to themselves. P5 definitely feels way less consistent and polished than SuMo though.
