I'm gonna dive into Minecraft for the first time with the Switch version. I was tempted to get the Wii U version when that came out but I never got round to it.

My first time doing Minecraft was a lot of fun, that I can vouch for. I'm one of those that needs a purpose and the first time around is filled with that. I would highly recommend playing on the hardest difficulty.

They're doing another stream tomorrow at 11am EST and have promised a lot more of the Switch version and hopefully direct feed this time.

I probably can't make it, but they answer questions on the stream so if anyone can ask them about docked resolution that would be great. It's the last piece of missing information that's left.

Never played minecraft.

Might get this on sale at some point.

I've never seen Minecraft on sale digitally on any platform. The rare exception was Google Play had a 10 cent sale for the mobile edition for some Google Play/Android Market milestone a couple years back.

Unless there's some ugly detail hidden out there, I will probably grab this one near release day. It will be my second copy of Minecraft besides the PC version. How does the multiplayer stuff work on consoles? Can I play online / local LAN with other friends who also own the game on Switch around me?

You can play online with up to 8 players (the console versions also have some exclusive minigames), I believe local is splitscreen only.

New details from today's stream:

Docking the game improves render distance. I'm assuming this means it doesn't boost resolution. They said "off the top of their head" it renders 7 chunks undocked, and 12 docked.

So for comparison:

On PS4 and Xbox One, the render distance is 18 chunks
On Switch Docked, the render distance is 12 chunks
On PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U, the render distance is 10 chunks
On Switch Undocked, the render distance is 7
On PS Vita, the render distance is 5 chunks

Prepare for the articles writing that the Switch renders only 1/12 of the blocks compared to the PS4/XB1 version!
Because all they see is 12 and god knows how their math works

so the switch is only 1,4 time more powerful than vita. LOL NINTENDO IT'S 2017 DAMMIT

It's a joke

Leaving aside the fact that Vita is 20fps and 540p sure.
20fps is an exaggeration i played the Vita version with latest patches it runs at 30fps alot and when there's lots of blocks it drops abit but not to 20fps low, at launch it was worse then improved after some updates also Vita is several years old hardware of course it's gonna be worse, 540p to 720p undocked not massive either

Render would primarily come down to number of polygons correct? Seems strang that Undocked wouldn't be able to outdo last-gen versions.

The world size on Switch is vastly bigger so I'm not sure you can do a 1:1 comparison with just the render distance and not taking everything else into account.

What I appreciate is that in every area it seems they made an effort to specifically customize this version for the Switch. Most people were expecting a straight WiiU port.

Since I'll be playing it undocked, as I have it on PS4 for the TV, I am looking at the 7 render distance. The PS3 render distance was low enough and the Vita render distance was far too low. Not really interested in going lower than what the PS3 had.

random question, do any of the console releases of Minecraft support any sort of modding?

no

although I swear they were on record ages ago saying they weren't actually against it, but they'd have to make a system for it to work on console. I would assume it'd be like the Skyrim setup if it ever comes.

biggest issue on console is not the limited world size. it is the breeding cap which very quickly gets maxed out when farming. it is really a shame has it is such a big part of the game.

But it is not a deal breaker. have played the shit out of the PS4 version and enjoyed it a lot

It's bigger, but if it's not being displayed it's irrelevant from a graphics processing standpoint.

FWIW, checking Pocket Edition now it seems it lets you choose between 4, 6, and 8--unless those options are already scaled to my phone in some way.

Draw distance sort of kills my boner for this. I guess should fire up the pocket edition and see how far 7 chunks really is.

I popped into my PC world and took some screens comparing 5, 7, 10, 12, and 16 chunk render distance. At least in the old version I was using 16 is where it maxed out, though I'm sure when playing VR modded version I've at least had it in the 20s before.
