I hate downloading huge updates that contain DLC I'll never play

Example is BF1. Never mind that it kills bandwidth caps, but it takes massive space on a consoles harddrive (which aren't big to begin with).

Why can't they separate that stuff?

And if your reply is "don't download them then", this works for games that aren't MP focused -- I have to download the update that is filled with content that I won't experience to play the game. /rant

If they separate it then it'll divide the userbase even further. Imagine playing a fighting game and buying a DLC character that you want to use online but you have trouble finding games because few people bought that character.

DOOM is the absolute worst at this

The current filesize is insane with the MP DLC, I would've kept just to play the single player but I need the space lol

Battlefield always sucked with this. BF4 and Hardline didn't have this issue but BFBC2 and BF3 did. Black Ops 3 bundled the first DLC in an update but stopped after that one - they should just remove it, though they used it as an excuse to run a free DLC weekend for it awhile back. I think Deus Ex Mankind Divided's DLC was bundled in an update? Why do that if I don't even own the content. It doesn't make any sense.

Doom was a huge offender. I got it for cheap and just wanted to play the single player game. The prepatched game on PS4 was not great, screen tearing was rampant within the first 20 minutes. So I had to sit there and download 50GBs of patches because the multiplayer content. After I beat Doom I just deleted it off my harddrive because it was taking up around 80GB.

I think it's fair, if the DLC is for multiplayer, for it to be required for multiplayer.

In the case of DOOM, I think they should be separate. If a player is never going to play multiplayer, they shouldn't have to download compatibility DLC for it.

Hilariously, SFV is actually great for this, in that its cinematic story mode is a totally optional download.

Yeah, this is a complaint I support 100% as well. It's a development that started in the last 1-2 years of the previous generation, and god knows why.

If people decide to purchase content, make them download it as they need it, but don't force me to waste gigs for each single game I have installed, in a time where highspeed internet is still an issue even in first world countries.

I would love to be able to fully uninstall Doom's multiplayer and snapmap; its file size is absurd, and actively pushes me away from reinstalling it for replays.

Like many of you have already said, Doom is the worst when it comes to it. I would have kept it on my hard drive if it was not for the ridiculous update sizes.

Exactly, Having everyone download the content even if they don't own it is the only way to prevent this. It's an even bigger negative if this wasn't the case.

Or, how much fun would you have if everyone brought the character but you? What would your response be to devs saying, "well just buy the DLC to play with everyone else"?

I can understand it for characters/skins stuff like that, but huge maps?

I also hate this.

The logic with BF is DLC guns need be usuable in vanilla maps etc, but how the hell do a few guns need several GB of data? I believe DLC maps are actually seperate downloads though.

DOOM, as has been mention, was awful. I'd still have it installed if not for the MP updates making it like 80GB. Sadly the patches also include some SP fixes, so you got a choice of poor SP or bloated install file.

I remember when the first DLC for Dead Rising 3 dropped and everyone was freaking the hell out about a forced 13GB update.

That seems quaint now.

I believe the trend started after mortal kombat's dlc essentially broke multiplayer and everyone got scared watching what a disaster that was for netherrealm essentially begging people to download the compatibility packs so people could use the characters online. I remember watching people online saying "fuck those people who bought that shit I hope they never get to use those characters" to justify not downloadeding the compatibility packs even though they came with free content. It was obvious to me then that this forced download future was going to be the reality.

For maps I get it, because someone who doesn't buy them will never physically see them while playing. For cosmetics or new characters/cars I get it. It sucked playing Forza Motorsport online last gen and having all DLC cars represented by Buick regals if you didn't own them.

Games are majorly blooted right now. Filled with unused and old data. FFXV is freaking 70gb on my PS4. It's nuts

Devs would be more inclined to trim the fat if there was something in it for them. All it is, is more work for them. No one is going to buy Doom because it's now half the size installed.
