Trails in the Sky the 3rd |OT| Time's the Charm

True.

Personally, I happen to think that TitS' combat system is actually really good (few JRPGs make me think as much as SC on hard), it's just far too slow by default.

Neat that they got the high-res assets!
(Unlike some companies who don't even use the high-res assets they already have and which are already integrated in other versions of a game :()
Falcom has a knack for good balancing. Though I play their turn-based games on normal (some of the optional fights are quite difficult already).

I'll foolishly take the bait and play this one, despite having doubts the two mains will act anything like a "father" and "sister". It'll probably be the last time I play this series since I did not deeply enjoy any game so far.

Finished FC and Steel 1. Was a bit of a chore finishing them, but their endings made me hope that their sequels would be more consistently interesting, but nope, SC and Steel 2 bored me outta my mind again. Couldn't finish 'em.

Will take a risk one more time and play 3rd because I'm interested in the Priest and Nun. If I end up not liking it/them, oh well. I'll just go back to Mario Kart 8D.

If I played Hard in SC is Hard the way to go here? Cold Steel 1 felt like the equivalent was Nightmare.

Glad to play the last Sky game soon, anyway; Cold Steel was alright but felt like a step back in combat design in a lot of ways from SC.

I assume they thought their market was the 10 people who bought SC and most of them already knew. Advertising's probably better spent on Cold Steel 1's PC port or another game that doesn't basically require playing two other games first.

reporting for duty!

I thought OT is not up yet, and it has 4 pages already!
I'm so late

Dammit XSeed, where is your advertising?!

it costs money, and Trails is no meme (or graphics) game that can be advertised by youtube vids, so there is that.

Twitter. XSEED doesn't seem like they have much resources for advertising in general.
Which is why their latest PC releases have all bombed :/
As will this.
But maybe putting up a trilogy bundle later on will help. And they will get more exposure by association once Cold Steel hits as well.

I forgot CS was coming to PC.

Have been wondering this. Can I remove Kevin from the party after I obtain more than 4 members? I recall I couldn't remove Estelle
and later Joshua
in SC.

seeing he's the main character, I'd guess no
and WHY WOULD YOU EVEN CONSIDER removing ESTELLE of all people!

Hopefully when Cold Steel 3 hits PS4 and PC at the same time, they can advertise both properly since it'll be a modern game that they'll be launching simultaneously on actual desired and successful platforms at release.

I think when Cold Steel 3 comes out, it'll be the first time I'll be able to play a new game in the series on an actual platform I want to play it on.

Still can't believe this is a thing that's happening. Feels surreal. I still remember vividly the moment I finished SC and got that depressing feeling of never being able to play 3rd - and here we are.

I'm kinda of two minds when it comes to Trails currently, truth to be told. I loved FC and SC, I enjoyed CS1, but I'm about halfway through CS2 and just can't find the motivation to go on. Everything in that game - the characters in particular - just feels offensively bland and boring to me.

So, here's hoping playing through 3rd rekindles my love for the series and motivates me to finally pick up CS2 again. I'm sure I'll end up positive about it if I gave it another shot.

the gain in popularity often makes developpers tone down the writing and make it more simple to reach a wider audience.... sadly that's often the case!

I still loved the game, the story that unfold in cold steel 2 is really intriguing and the world building is still amazingly well done! But yeah the characters aren't as interesting and the story isn't as dark as the first serie (can't judge on zero and ao, didn't play them, hope they will be next)

yeah you are right on the characters not as interesting. I mean except Jusis, everyone wants to solve their problem using the power of friendship. I feel like every scene each one of them gives an opinion how their friendship will overcome their struggles

Kevin, Ries, Richard and Renne seems like a good party.

Richard in particular, because I've heard
that he's broken.

Speaking of characters, how many Reserves do you get and do they interject into story scenes? Not sure how to fit everyone I want into a party otherwise.

XSEED's done a better job advertising 3rd than they did SC, even with SC's massive hype before the release date announcement. 3rd's date was announced almost a month out, Britanny/Hatsuu and co-workers did a helpful preview stream, and there's been a whole bunch of FC/SC patches catching people's attention because of what's getting back-ported from 3rd. The countdown on Twitter/Facebook helps a lot too.

The speedhack upgrade's just too good, so much that I've been replaying FC just to see how quickly I can reabsorb the NPC stories. OP needs to make this option very prominent!

Xseed said they'd probably make a trilogy bundle, but not at release.
I think FC and SC could get a discount on 3rd release though.
Hatsuu mentioned in the release date announcement/preview stream getting some kind of bundle ready by the end of this year. She didn't say it was specifically for the whole trilogy; I'd prefer a bundle for SC and 3rd with a deeper discount for FC at that point (or price drop to $15). There's no appeal to buying the later two games unless you enjoyed FC enough to continue with sequels of a similar pace and style.

So uh, I've been wondering.

Falcom's sprites... Are they pre-rendered models, claymation, or hand-drawn?
CG, pre-rendered sprites with a homemade look. I'm certain they chose this modeling style because, as beautiful as Zwei!! is, 3D models are easier to modify and rig for animation than keyframe 2D animation. Xanadu Next and Gurumin introduced admirable but less pliable polygon models for characters and monsters, even though Gurumin's style has aged well in particular.

They're pre-rendered models created in LightWave then placed into preset scenes to render them as sprite sheets.
They are specially colored and set up specifically for the rendering, but wouldn't look nearly as good as actual 3D models due to being tailor-made to that purpose.

Pumped this is finally coming, but no portable version means I'll probably never have the chance to play it for any significant amount of time (I'll still buy it Day 1 and hope for the fans to do their work).

I'm actually glad this one is different from the others. Trails has always been a series I find more attractive from a distance. I own them all—twice over for FC and SC (PSP and PC), and I even picked up the EVO versions of Ao and Zero in the hopes that I will one day be able to play them somehow. I've completed both FC and SC, but never really felt either game rose to the level of the greats in the genre. The worst thing to me is the music, which I find to be mediocre at the best of times, and downright annoying at the worst of times. For reference, my favorite RPG series' are Dragon Quest and Suikoden and I would estimate that over half of the RPGs I have played to completion are Dragon Quest games.
Still, something has kept me interested in this series—it might be my love of Falcom in general (love love love Ys), or the art style which I have always found charming.
Anyway, it nevertheless makes me really happy that this is coming out, and I am seriously considering picking up a GPDWin just so I can play this on my commute like I did FC and SC.

Cold Steel is a near-total failure in terms of character writing from my perspective, which is a real problem when the structure of Trails games requires you to enjoy spending a lot of time with the characters. Rean is such a wet blanket and most of his classmates aren't much better. 3rd shouldn't suffer from this problem since Kevin and the rest of the Sky cast are actually good characters.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Can't wait for this to go live. I keep checking even though I know it's still a day away

No, I'm talking about a complete your collection-bundle with the entire trilogy. Anything else doesn't make sense and this can't be hard to do.
Own FC? Get SC+3rd for an extra -10% or something to whatever the current sale price is.
Own FC+SC? Get 3rd for an extra -10%.
Etc.

I was already confused why they didn't do this for FC+SC already.
This (to me) seems to be such an obvious psychology 101 thing for getting people to buy multiple games without having completed the predecessors (which is a big problem with these games especially) while also serving as a nice loyality discount if you happen to already own all the others.

But what do I know :p

With this link as well?
Obviously you need to own Firefly Diaries.

Otherwise, I dunno. Maybe region-specific? Would suck but that's the only thing I can think of.

I feel like that US under release date should be changed to everywhere else since it's coming out in more than just the US.

That said. I'll play it when I am able to but I'm buying it day 1 to support this awesome series.

Also more Anelace is in this game I heard. I can't not buy this game now!

I'll be buying this day 1, but won't start it for a little while as I've not finished Cold Steel yet.

I'm still a little surprised that it's happening, not least because the story felt wrapped up after 2 anyway, so I figured they wouldn't bother.

Subscribed. After finals, idk if I want to play Persona 5 or Trails in the Sky Third Chapter first. Also studying for MCATs, so time is severely limited ;_;

Since we finally finished our game, I've been replaying Trails FC. In the final dungeon now so I just need to get a copy of SC PSP and finish that and I'll be set for 3rd and then Cold Steel. Planning on playing SC on the Vita since I rarely get much time to play non-portable games.

How am I supposed to feel if Kevin is literally my least favorite character from the cast of the first two games?

I have the complete opposite reaction! Estelle was my least favorite and Kevin was in my Top 3 so I'm thrilled to find out he is the main character. Gonna make a party of Zane/Zin, Oliver, Kevin, and the new girl. I honestly wouldn't play this if Estelle was the lead again.

Also anyone have an estimated length for this? I'm hoping for a more maneagable 40 hours than what I ended up putting into SC.
