I just had maple syrup, real canadian maple syrup for the first time

GAF, my whole Log Cabin syrup on pancake life has been a lie.

What the fuck is the garbage they serve us, put on our shelves.

Goddamn, I had no idea real maple syrup was so different.

So, what say you GAF, what do you think of real maple syrup birthed from the proud tree loins of Canada?

I say it tastes like fucking revelation.

Welcome to the Light

Sadly finding real syrup at a restaurant or store when you're somewhere away from the north can be tough. Easy in Boston, not so much the further south you get. To my surprise even grocery stores in some southerny areas have nothing but the corn syrup stuff.

Now the next step for you is try all the grades. Maple syrup grades aren't about quality but instead about the darkness/flavor. Darker it is, the more maple-ly. Grade B is da bomb, but it can be really weird if you're used to fakey stuff. Grade A Light is the easiest to start with.

Fake maple syrup is disgusting and would /have just eat dry pancakes/waffles instead of the fake stuff. Fake syrup ruins the taste.

Just wait until you try real poutine.

Even Cracker Barrel went with half and half sugar cane and maple. It's hard to find the good stuff. But so amazingly worth it. There's a few things in this world that cannot be shared and this is one of those things.

Maple is a pretty lovely flavor. I don't use the syrup on pancakes or stuff like that (I prefer them plain with salted butter). But I love to bake and cook with it, and maple candies are amazing.

They sell it at my local shop.

It's like 4 times more expensive than sommit like Ms. Butterworth, but it's p tasty and comes in a glass bottle.

Now you should seek out some real raw creamed honey, take a spoonful and mix that in with half a tablespoon of bee pollen. Oh my the texture and flavor is delicious. The earlier the harvest date of honey then the better IMO.

Call me simple, but I don't like it. A little too cloyingly sweet for my tastes. Gimme dat Mrs. Butterworth's any day of the week!

I haven't experimented with different grades a whole lot though so there might be a maple syrup out there Just For Me but I can't be bothered to find it.

Wait, the B grade is better than A grade?

Get the fuck outta here.

For me, yeah, it's better. I'll take Grade A Dark if I can't find Grade B.

...

So double checking the grades to make sure there were 3 As, it turns out they've changed the system recently so B would now be 'Grade A Very Dark'

This is weird. You're weird.

On a related note, I have a friend who can't stand soda made with cane sugar, but loves the HFCS stuff. I'm not super anti HFCS, but I have the sense to tell which one tastes better.

My daughter (who turned three last week) loves pancakes and has never tasted that fake corn syrup shit. I plan to keep it that way as long as I can.

The real thing is expensive, but totally worth it.

Didn't try maple syrup for the first time until I was about eight or nine years old, after having only known (and enjoyed) corn syrup-based pancake syrup before that. Honestly, I wasn't really sold on it at first since I was a really picky eater when I was young, but once I adjusted to the flavor it became my preferred option by far.

Also, maple sugar candies are possibly the most amazing candy I've ever had in my life, even though I really love chocolate. Literal melt-in-your-mouth.

I had bought a jug of Grade B for my family down south and my nephew, who loves pancakes and would eat a lot of pancakes, found the jug. Not knowing how expensive/concentrated it was he poured on a fake syrup amount, like half the small jug. Basically told him he better love it, as he had just eaten like $5-10 worth of syrup.

If you have a Costco or Trader Joe's by you, their maple syrup is fantastic. TJ uses a vermont maple, don't recall Kirkland/Costco.

I can vouch for the Trader Joes maple syrup

I never had fake maple syrup until fairly recently. It's crap, but coming across the real stuff is pretty easy in Ohio.

poutine is fucking gross tho

Come on, it's good but not some kind of holy grail that it's made out to be.

2:00 a.m. drunk - God Tier

Normal sober life not 2:00 a.m. - Can I get the steak please?

It really lives in this world of drunken mythology. Just take it for what its worth. Donner Kebab is leagues ahead of puotine for "after club food".

Yeah it's easy to go through the real stuff fast since it soaks into the pancake a lot faster than corn syrup.

Still, your nephew chowed down on an expensive breakfast.

Never had "real" maple syrup, but I've always wondered what the big deal was. Maybe it's worth getting from somewhere like Amazon? Though I have no clue which brand to get.

Ms. Buttersworth's has always been the only syrup I like of the various "fake" syrups I've tried.

In that case I think I maybe have tried the real stuff before. I've certainly tried some fancy looking syrups that were the most sickeningly sweet stuff I've ever tasted. Even the slightest dab of that is much for me.

I grew up on maple syrup and didn't realize that there was fake stuff back then. The first time I had "maple" syrup, I literally spit out the pancake i was eating and just ate the plain stuff I had left.

Get the fuck outta here.

It's subjective.

Grade A Dark / Robust (the old Grade B) has much more mapley flavor, but it can be overpowering.

Grade A Golden / Delicate (the old Fancy grade) is much lighter and acts as an accent to say...Teas and stuff.

I prefer Golden Delicate for griddle items with fruit whereas I prefer Dark Robust or Amber Rich for griddle items without any fruit.

I grew up on Maple Syrup. Let's just say I wasn't too pleased when I tried "Syrup" in America for the first time.
