Oculus Rift and Touch Thread: I need something more

Oculus Medium Large Update is live (Facebook link)

I was going to reply to this and got distracted and forgot about it. I'm not sure if I would trust the framerate graph on Afterburner. I don't know if it's accurate when taking into account ATW/ASW. You can try running the Oculus Debug Tool performance OSD; I would expect it to be more reliable. The way that ATW and ASW work I'm not sure how you'd get frame pacing issues though.

As for the distortion at the peripheral, I've noticed this as well, but like you said I have to looking for it.

Turns out I had RTSS capping the framerate to 60 so the Rift had to settle for 45 as it couldn't go above that. Turned it off and I was at 90 :)

Google Earth VR has been updated with official Touch support and a release on Oculus Home.

You can also now search for an address or location instead of having to manually fly there.

Man, I can't keep up with all this content. I really need to put aside some time in the near future to go through everything I've missed.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Does anyone else think the avatars in the Oculus Social thing look absolutely horrendous?

Something about their eyebrows and faces... well pretty much everything.

Yes.

It's wild to me that the Facebook VR social app is, like, the ugliest VR social thing I've seen.

And it's not more functional than other social apps as I estimated before trying. After trying it, I'm baffled. Who is this for? Not the current VR consumer base, that's for damn sure. The one funny thing I noticed but haven't tried...can you facetime a non-VR person on facebook where all they see is your goofy ass avatar talking back to them? I would call so many people just to watch the confusion on their faces, lol.

Edit: Okay, yep, I just cartoon facetimed a friend. That shit is hilarious, facebook spaces (very partially) redeemed.

Yes.

It's wild to me that the Facebook VR social app is, like, the ugliest VR social thing I've seen.

What exactly is ugly about it?

I think the app is extremely neat and can't see what they do to build it out. It is extremely barebones right now, but with more interactive addons I could see it being really cool.

I think the ability to call friends is also a nice touch. It would be cool if they managed to build something out that allows them to interact with you.

1.14 is rolling out

Release Notes
  • Features:
    • Improved first experience for experimental 360° tracking.
      • The Oculus app now fully supports setting up three sensors for experimental 360° tracking.
      • Connecting a third sensor now automatically prompts you to set up experimental 360° tracking.
    • Improved efficiency when updating the Oculus software on your computer.
    • Oculus Touch:
      • You'll now see where your Touch controllers are located as soon as you enter VR.
      • Many apps, games, and experiences that previously required the Xbox One Wireless Controller can now be played using Touch controllers. These apps will use the buttons and triggers on Touch, but won’t support Touch controller tracking during gameplay. You’ll see supported apps marked “Touch (as gamepad)” in the Oculus Store. Windows 8.1+ required.
  • Bug-fixes:
    • Fixed issue with sensor tracking setup, especially when setting up three sensors.
    • Fixed issue with app videos in the Oculus Store always starting at full volume.

Also, cool video on Facebook showcasing Goro Fujita's newest creation in Quill. I thought it was pretty awesome.

It has enough polish, there's just a big fundamental disconnect between me and the visual style of the avatars. They strike me as, like, those terrible comic strip creator images you see extended family posting on FB, only in VR form.

They should just use Bitmojis. :)

That said I don't mind the cartoonish style. I prefer it unless they are able to really nail down a realistic model with good kinematics.

Right now I sort of hope focus on getting more applications into it because I feel like I have already seen everything to see.

Yeah, my area is about that size. As long as you can extend your arms and be able to maybe take a step in each direction you'll be fine, if not ideal.

I have my setup with 3 sensors and overall everything works great! Robo Recall so far is killer app. Only issue I have is I can't play call of the starseed. smh In the beginning during the tutorial when you have to grab bottles in four corners and break them I can reach two of the bottles. They are in my walls. LOL will have to move my cameras to play this game. It's no biggie as I am running the oculus off my laptop. So far loving this thing more than my PSVR.

Wall/ceiling-mounted my sensors finally.

Still unsure about getting a third sensor. To really make use of my space I will need a really long USB extension cable. For now the Vive is much better with roomscale anyway.

Does anyone think there might be a future reason to pick up a second pair of touch controllers? Id almost rather not wait on however long it takes for Oculus to ship my third sensor when I could just walk into best buy right now and grab a Touch since it comes with a sensor.

The trailer for Alien: Covenant In Utero dropped today along with the news that it will hit the Oculus platform in two days’ time on April 26th. A description accompanying the trailer notes that the experience will allow viewers to become a ‘Neomorph’, a new creature set to appear in the upcoming movie. Beyond that all we can make out from the footage is muffled screams. Sounds like fun for all the family.

It's from the same developers as The Martian VR though so I'd be wary of going in and buying it blind.

If you're looking for a discount on the Steam version of Batman: Arkham VR, NewEgg has a digital code for $15.99 USD with code EMCRECF54.

Bundle Stars also has it for $15.99 for the next 1.5 hours (ends at 12:00 EDT).

Hey guys is the rift a significant upgrade in terms of graphics over a PSVR and Pro? Looking to sell my PSVR, what are the pros and cons of trading up?

Also I have a i5 4570 and a 1070, and I currently have 2x USB3.0 and 1x USB2.0 ports free. Will the processor hold me back?
Will this setup last me for at least this generation of VR?

Obviously it depends on the game and how well your PC can run it but yes the image quality is an upgrade over the Pro with a PSVR. It isn't a massive upgrade though so don't buy it expecting it to be leaps and bounds better than the PSVR. The tracking on the touch controllers are a lot better though, for me the move controllers seemed to always be shaking around a bit.

The best reason to pick one up though is the software, I got a PSVR at launch but by January I found that the new releases were slowing down. Since getting a rift though there has been games coming out every month and there are a bunch of good early access games that are putting out content updates regularly so I always seem to have something new to play.

I've heard great things about Wilson's heart. Also if you like RTS games, landfall is fun.

Any chance of an improved version by this time next year? I'm building a computer at this time next year and have budgeted 3000 for it. Hope it's enough.

Oculus say they won't have a follow-up to Rift until 2019 at the earliest. HTC said something similar I think. I wouldn't be surprised to see headsets from other manufacturers between now and then that have better displays and support SteamVR.

I'm kind of glad of this, as much as I want to see improved headsets the next leap needs to be significant to make me upgrade on what I already have.

Release 1.15 is rolling out
  • Features:
    • Improved 360° tracking and roomscale support.
      • We further improved sensor setup for multi-sensor configurations.
      • 360° tracking with three sensors is now fully supported for sitting, standing, and roomscale play modes.
      • 360° tracking with two sensors is still experimental. Learn more in our help center.
    • When possible, the Oculus app will now warn you when your Rift headset’s HDMI is not plugged into the most appropriate GPU – both during setup and under Settings > Devices.
    • You’ll now see a notification when antivirus software blocked the installation of an app.
    • Improved presentation of health and safety information.
      • The new user experience now includes a short video about Rift and Touch safety. After watching the video, you can choose to display health and safety reminders when entering VR.
      • You can watch the video at any time, under Settings > General in the Oculus app.
  • Bug-fixes:
    • You can once again enter your height with zero inches when setting the floor position in VR.

And someone interpreted Iribe's tweet to mean that there is now alpha support for a camera tracked with a third touch controller for greenscreen mixed reality.

I wonder if that "most appropriate GPU" bit means that it the software may attempt to work on laptops that have nVidia + Intel?

I'm reading that Star Trek Bridge Crew is out on Ubisoft store (Oculus key). But currently region locked to the US. On mobile and lazy, so no links.

Can confirm. Buy it from the US store here (not inside Uplay): http://store.ubi.com/us (Yes, it still says preorder, no, it doesn't matter.)

Your email confirmation will have an Oculus key included in it, and it works immediately.

inXile's The Mage's Tale is releasing June 20. Trailer via VRFocus

Also, if you've somehow missed the other GAF thread or other coverage, Bridge Crew is getting near universal praise. Am not a Trek fan but looks like I'll be picking it up.

You can still get the game for 20% off with 100 uPlay points on Ubi's store. You can choose between Oculus or Steam keys, and despite some early reports saying otherwise, the Steam version does apparently not require SteamVR to run.
